It's so weird to me when people fanboy and rush to defend Apple on stupid **** like this. Just implement RCS FFS. Android phones are the vast majority (~70%) of users in the world so it be nice to properly communicate with them.

It's Apple being this stubborn that has made us suffer through some terrible design decisions far longer than we needed to over the years (lightning, butterfly keyboard, port-less MacBook).
While it is true that 70% of the users in the world use Android, in the US, iOS is the majority and will continue to drive the choices Apple makes. I was an Android user for 9 years, it's a fine OS, so don't take this as unwarranted shots at Google.

Do you realize RCS doesn't support E2E encryption? Maybe in the future it could, but until Google prioritizes it it'll always stay behind their native apps. RCS is just the latest cog in the propaganda machine to drive people to Android, it's sales tactics, it's what they should be doing to grow their market share.

A good read on why it doesn't make any business sense for Apple to support it. Honestly, it's not that big of a problem and it's not worth the engineering time.

My only regret is that the main alternatives to iMessage are operated by Google and Meta.
I chuckle every time Meta advertises their product being “secure” and “encrypted”. I’d bet money if one of your conversations mentions soccer, you’ll see a Facebook ad for a sporting goods company or soccer gear.

HA this has to be on purpose. This is *exactly* what Android users used to see when iPhone users reacted to a message.

Seems like Google is trying the old “taste of their own medicine” tactic to try to force the issue with RCS.

Joke’s on them, Apple doesn’t give a ****.

Or, here's a thought, it's just two different messaging platforms doing the best they can on each end to co-exist, and using the same implementation on this one feature.

This back and forth is years old now and getting annoying.

European: “eew who uses SMS? You poor Americans stuck in the dark ages, everyone uses whatsapp!”

American: “eew why would anyone use whatsapp? That’s owned by facebook you know. Everyone uses SMS!”
As an American, using a third-party app for primary communication is very foreign (no pun intended) to me.

My point is that this is the least creative and most annoying solution, and it seems clear that each side does it to annoy the other.

If you really think that Google and Apple are “doing the best they can to coexist” especially on the subject of text messages, you haven’t been paying attention.

SMS is quickly becoming a battleground and we the users are the casualties.

I'm sure Apple will NOT parse the texts into the appropriate change they are holding to the "iMessage is better" argument.

With that said, I think Apple should at least support RCS. SMS is old and archaic. When most of the world's carriers are all supporting it as well it's time to at least do that.

Thing is, on Android it’s absolutely standard because there’s no iMessage, and the European telcos didn’t take the same path Americans did, so even SMS is not great for them.

But on Android all you have is SMS which of course sucks, so Android users have been using third party apps for messaging for years.

Why would Apple invest any time and money supporting a proprietary google fork of RCS, especially when google's commitment to a technology lasts about as long as a civil conversation on social media?
Is it a fork? RCS is a standard, Google has simply implemented it into their OS. Apple can implement it as well, and it will work between the two of them.

Problem is, the network operators are actually not supporting it. They had years to support it and they spent that time figuring out how to use it to price gouge and lock in their customers. Then they canceled those “projects” when they realized they couldn’t upcharge for it and that it had to work across network operators.

So Google started running their own RCS servers, and made their default texting app which now ships on all Android phones use that.

So it should be a carrier service but it is now a de facto Google service, which is one reason Apple is dragging their heels.

This won't work because of Apple's limited tapback "vocabulary". I hope they eventually expand it to all emoji. At least give us an "OK" reaction. I feel like I need that multiple times a day.
Or a smile emoji. Thumbs up feels passive agressive

Apple makes beautiful products and has an enviable ecosystem, and isn't going away. Android is the globally dominant mobile operating system and isn't going away either. I hope this nonsense is resolved soon - all it does is harm us, the consumers.

I know it’s a very unpopular opinion here, but all of the efforts in the past year to improve text communications between iPhones and android have been made by Google, and it is a shame that Apple is doing nothing on their end. Don’t know if RCS is the necessary answer, but it is as terrible for android and iPhone users to have all this mismatch in features and functionalities

I would love to have Apple implementing RCS. That just might remove incentive from some people to insist using WhatsApp and allow me keep more of the conversations within Apple's Messages apps.

Next step would be to have a working video call cross devices without need for Zoom/Google Meet/... (FaceTime is hardly a working solution even between two Apple devices due to endless bugs)
