Yet another thread where people have talked themselves into the fact that they don't need anything that Apple hasn't already implemented. I literally have nothing else to say.

I'm sorry, would it make you feel better if I lied and said that I really would use something when I actually wouldn't?

How would that be beneficial to anyone?

It is slick, my neighbour is running Honeycomb 3, and his browser looks great. BUT, and it's a big but.....It lags like hell. His device is the brand new iconia Tab, with the Tegra chip.

Using it, you just feel like you're walking in glue....Bling over substance I fear.
You must be talking about a different browser, the stock one, which even though I don't use (I use Dolphin HD) never had any lag with it, the older stock browser before the S2's came out seemed mehhh but they improved it for the new gen phones. The new Chrome beta browser is sick, that's what their talking about, fast as hell and smooth. But only for ICS devices right now so that sucks (unless you Rom 4.0), just checked out my neighbors yesterday to see it. If it's as good as it is in Beta mode right now, that'll be king of the mobile browsers.

Tab syncing is an interesting concept, but feels like overkill. I can see how it would be useful for some but I really just want bookmark syncing to happen instantly (as opposed to taking minutes), so you can add something to Reading List on one device and open it on another.

As far as managing open pages (or "tabs"), I didn't really see anything special. The animation and layout has a "ooo shiney!" factor but it's basically the same process - tap a button, choose the page you want to switch to.

The one thing I really liked was the edge-swipe to switch between open pages.

Safari is great if that's all you know. I'd probably only sync a tab a couple times but I like the fact I COULD for those couple of times.

There has been a few times in my life that I've told myself "well this is all I really need anyway". I was just convincing myself that what I bought was as good as the competition.

Tab syncing is damn near instantaneous. I'm not sure where you came up with it taking minutes. Bookmark syncing is hardly the same thing. If you bookmark pages each time then that means you'd have to remember to remove that bookmark, otherwise you'll wind up with a lot of useless unneeded bookmarks.

I haven't seen it but I'm not surprised. While I like Apple's OS's and hardware, their software always seems to leave a lot to be desired. It tends to be overly basic where it leaves out lots of useful features.

I know I don't use safari on my iphone but another browser that ads a lot better functionality (PerfectBrowser). As well as using a calendar that will synch with the iOS calendar that has a lot better features/interface. The only apple software that came with my iphone I use is contacts but I really don't need much for that.

Apple's keep it basic works for OS's, but it sure doesn't work for their software.

I am not sure why you responded to my post in this manner. Is it to imply that you talked yourself into not needing something since Apple didn't implement it? If so... LOL. If not, I wasn't referencing you, so again I ask, why respond to my post?

Right, instant sync is what's needed to avoid the email-myself-a-link method of moving from one device to another. That's great.

Reading List is a special bookmark folder in Safari that's meant to be used for something you want to read but not keep a permanent bookmark of. So you throw some stuff in your reading list and you read it later. Sites are automatically moved out of the reading list once they are opened, so you don't have to manage cleaning it up. In theory it should be perfect for marking a site on one device to open up easily on another, but it takes minutes to sync, sadly making the email-a-link method more efficient in the case where you want to immediately move from one device to another.

Safari Mobile IS dated as far as I'm concerned. Although safari is king on my mac I can't stand the mobile version. Been using chrome since it was released yesterday. By far the best mobile browser ever created and it's just in beta 1! Pretty amazing. The speed is insane

As mysterioustko is pointing out, the stock Android ICS browser is pretty much as minimal as they come with quick controls.

I hope they come to Chrome (which is already quite minimal in itself).

Screenshots are:
(Stock, stock, Safari, Chrome for Android)

Thanks for the pics. I wasn't trying to say one browser was better than another. Simply that I want my browser to be minimal since I"m trying to see the net.
:D

No problems. :) I prefer as little on my phone screen as you do so I totally understand your point.

It's not such a problem on tablets but we does need more access to the content on these tiny phones.

You're right. I think this browser is far and beyond the best mobile browser on any platform, and like you said this is just the first beta! While using the browser to read this forum today I noticed another feature. I noticed that if there are multiple small links in a small area, if your finger may be hitting more than one link at the same time, it will give you a zoom bubble that will let you select the link easier. I have attached a screenshot of it so you can see what I mean.

Is that like the copy and paste and you're using it to click a link?

That's pretty slick. I usually just zoom then tap but I think that is better.

No it's not copy and paste. It's built in the browser. Basically if there is something that is small that you need to tap and it's between some other things that are able to be tapped, it will bring up that zoom bubble as opposed to you having to zoom the screen in on that section just to click what you want.

Yeah I was surprised to see that. I hadn't seen that documented anywhere, but while browsing the forums I just happened to try to tap something without zooming in and that happened. My reaction was "that's very convenient". Makes browsing even easier, since now I don't have to zoom in to tap tiny links.

I see. I have to admit that does seem like it would be very useful. There have been plenty of times I've been on forums and tried to click "page 2" and wind up on page 1 or 3. I am pretty much in the habit of zooming in to click those links now, so that little zoom bubble thing does seem like it would be nice to have.

I'm actually downloading Dolphin's Browser now. I've just come to the realization that I don't even use Safari on my laptop. Why would I have to endure it on my phone?

Only problem.. links in emails...I need to get them to direct to Dolphin as my default web browser.

This forum is full of people like that, but you have to admit, we really only need 2 things on Safari and that's vastly improved tab handling and the ability to upload and download, and for some of that, I use Dolphin Browser on my iPhone.

I don't even remember the last time I opened Safari to be honest.

I've been using the new Chrome browser on my Nexus and I like it but its definitely still in Beta. I think it has amazing potential however. At this point, I am liking Dolphin browser the best.

The thing about Apple is that they're so inflexible. It's a give and take really. But there comes a time where you have to change something or it will seem outdated. You can't rotate Safari's browser all the way around.

There's a whole list of stuff you can't do... But at least it's stable.

Now how do I make Dolphin my default browser?

After you've install Dolphin, the next time you click on a link in any program that calls the browser, it will ask you which browser you would like to use to complete the action.
You even have the option to make the selection the default action.

Oh wait... you're not on Android.
Not sure how that will work in iOS.

Agreed. I'd add text reformatting to that list also. I hate having to scroll side to side when I'm reading text heavy sites.

I just don't understand why I have to jailbreak just to change my default browser. That just seems so stupid. Am I really incapable of choosing a browser? Apparently Apples thinks I am. :apple:

There is no way to do it on iOS sadly (without jailbreak).
