Yes, I`m seriously. If you are another one "psychologist" then I told them what they should do several posts before. Do you think I`m angry about this arrow? Or that I`ll shoot myself with my kalashnikov because of it? :D

I respect Apple (products) for striving for excellence. This arrow just looks imperfect to me. And I ask other`s opinion. That`s all, my friend.

Hey, it`s 200th post in this thread =)

Good god, 200 posts about an arrow! :D

Edit: 201 :)

Dude, seriously? Learn to pick your battles. It's a ****in arrow.

Dude, chill. It may seem like a little problem but your reaction is rather over the top.

Hey, it`s 200th post in this thread =)

I'm also surprised that we've gotten to 200+ posts in a thread about an arrow!

For what it's worth, I think an arrow is needed, but they could have a better looking arrow.

By the way, why we can`t unlock device in BOTH directions? I think it would be useful for left-handed people for example =)))

Just checked out, personally, I can unlock in both directions with the same comfort.

Personally the fact that the text and time etc. slides over a static background kind of reminded me of the springboard. As such I instinctively thought (a couple of times) that I could swipe left (as if the lock screen was the old search location)

I too think a swipe left or right could be useful. Having said that, giving the whole screen over to swipe left or right will greatly increase the number of accidental unlocks - even more than the current iOS7 case of swiping right anywhere on the screen.

Although the new unlock screen looks much much better, it is rather form over function.

I just discovered swipe when shutting down works in either direction!

Hmmmmmm
You must be a genius, that is amazing discovery... NOT!!!
Btw; Yet another magnificent and MEGA intelligent thread on MR forums...
So we are complaining about something that we will see only for 4 seconds on iPhone, or will not see at all on iPad with any kind of Smart Cover...
Simply genius. I have to start a thread about problems of using iPad or iPhone while sitting on the toilet seat...

No I just think you're overreacting.

No need for the special thread about an arrow on screen really. People will never be satisfied with anything.

For me, it is ok, maybe on the right side of the sign but still it is ok where it is now.

Go get some sleep.

Hello there.

I think this little arrow is most conspicuous element in beta 4.

I don`t like the little arrow afore "slide to unlock". Home screen became asymmetrical.

apart from the screen being a square theres nothing "symmetrical" about the home screen anyway. if apple listened to you about symmetry you'd only be allowed symmetrical wallpapers, the time, signal strength, etc would also either be mirrored or not there at all. that big clock you see? nothing symmetrical about it. in fact other than the numbers 0 and 8 there are no other symmetrical numbers. Should apple only show the time when its midnight on a 24 hour clock? no other times would be symmetrical looking.

also that CAMERA ICON you see. apple should remove that aswell or have it on both sides. symmetry you know.

and if you mean it seems more "weighted" towards the left, still no. its a small arrow. look at the status bar, it seems more weighted towarsd the big 5 signal dots. camera aswell only on right side.

these are beneficial for usability. theres all there is to it. if any of us were skilled enough to critique apple icons or arrows or symmetry we'd be working there. lets not be armchair designers.

The guy who started this thread would probably turn down girls if they have a mole on one side of their face.

I don't like that there are any NC/CC indicators at all.

It's like they're advertising the fact that you can open them from the lockscreen now, or something.

People already know to pull down/swipe up normally, they shouldn't need an indicator on the lockscreen.

Dont be myopic. People like you and me and for users here know how to do this stuff. A major part of apples growth comes from new users. They dont know this stuff. Neither do they care about the line indicators or single arrows or symmetry. For them its something new. Something fresh. Something simple. Something stable.

The nerds and wannabe graphic designers and critics on these forums make up a small % of apples sales. I think its high time you power users evaluate the other os systems and make the jump rather than complaining about things that wont change or apple wont take into consideration.

You know why apple doesnt use focus groups? Becausethey know correctly most users dont know what they want until they have it. I.e user criticism and actual behavior dont match. So why listen to them.

And they have a point. I doubt any of these complainers are jumping ship. And if apple actually listened to them they would alienate a lot of their casual user market, and them the same critics would turn around and talk about how the previous behavior was sooooo much better.

This isn't directed at you specifically, I've seen this comment many times. I'm pretty sure Apple intends to sell many iOS devices to people that haven't used them before and I assume many of those will be someone's first smartphone. If you have to look at the screen and wonder what to do then it's a poor UI. If it says "Slide to Unlock" without a visual cue then I would expect a slide in any direction to unlock it (unless you choose to slide one of the other controls on the screen). Just my US$.02.

EXACTLY! Just get rid of the stupid bars (used to be arrows) top & bottom of lock screen, then you won't need an arrow next to "slide to unlock"! Apple needs to go for the clean look, not the "here is where you slide first time user", because, anyone that needs this only needs it once.

Seriously how can a tiny arrow like that be annoying? What am I missing?

You're missing an unstable obsessive delusional personality. You need one of those to be bothered by insignificant things.

The day one of these complainers actually leaves ios after their hissy fits is the day they get any kind of credibility.

But, if the top and bottom arrows/bars are not there, then the animation for "slide to unlock" is moving left to right, that is the indicator.

The confusion only came from the arrows/bars they added at top & bottom of screen, which are redundant once the person knows where the notifications and control center are. Maybe apple should consider a short video tutorial to show how the gesture functions work on the basic functions of the phone for those that are new to it all, it runs itself on first activation...seriously, that is the only time a new person might need it.

Its just part of the design. Up til ios 6 the lock screen had the slide to unlock feature, in a zome, with highlight always moving left to right. Nobody conplained about how that highlight should go away after the tutorial.

In fact why stop at the arrow in ios7? Why not say hey once weve seen the tutorial just remove the text slide to unlock fully. Just a blank space.

Why stop there. Once the phone is unlocked do we really need all those icons once weve installed apps. Afterall we can just spotlight search. Why all the home screens.

Why even an unlimited contact list? Nobody could ever have more than 1000 contacts.

Because these are all arbitrary preferences! A phone needs to be different things to different people. You cant expect them to design a phone just for uou and then the whole world adjusts to YOUR patterns.

How about we get rid of the stupid nasty arrow, and the ugly stupid text, and take the camera out to the back 40 while we're at it, because it's in control center anyways, then we can get rid of the option to disable control center on the lock screen, because who cares, and we get rid of the stubby lines at the top and bottom and have a nice clean tranquil home screen?

(sorry i'm trying to quit smoking)

That is a good point, since the camera is in Control center why not remove the icon?

I'm still voting for no arrows, swipe in either direction, a Battlestar Galactica style flow of light rushing through the text Slide to unlock

Hoping all lock screen notifications could also swipe in either...

Hope the habit kick moves quickly for you.. :)

they are likely there at least partially if not mostly because access to NC and CC can be disabled from the lock screen. Without those bar indicators or indicators if some sort you might not necessarily know if you should or shouldn't have access to them and/or if there's some issue and you can't access them when you should be able to.

And watch those accidental unlocks multiply even more. Lock screen is for locking and should really be somewhat more locked down than simply responding to practically any swipe anywhere on the screen.

Serious question, how many people buy an iPhone without ever seeing one or handling it or having it demo'd so they'd be baffled at how to open it?

I must say that when my iPhone just booted the first time into beta 4 my first reaction was: what is that ugly ">" doing there?

So I understand the thread starter.

And for all the people saying "it's just an arrow, bla bla". Please ask the admins to shut down macrumors as a whole, since it's only iphones and mac rumors, who cares? There are more important things in life like the fact that every 6 seconds a child dies somewhere in the world. So please, shift delete macrumors.com (yes, this was sarcasm)

We are mac/iphone enthousiast and we all enjoy the rumors and the changes Apple make. And if people want to discuss an arrow on the homescreen, and you don't, then just don't open the thread and move along to something you do find worth discussing.

peace.

Ditch arrow, add line

If they would add a horizontal line over the unlock text, people would stay in that region to unlock their phone instead of sliding up...
