Glossy just shows more crap on it. Everything that touches it will leave an imprint. You'll appreciate the extra bit of contrast in colors while you're sitting under fluorescent lights enjoying the dust and finger prints all over your screen :) lol.

the apple store is supper bright with actual white light.
when you take it home and or studio you will have less light.
as i have 6 100watt bulbs shinning from the ceiling and i baught a 19in matte extended desktop next to my glossy 15in and i straight up returned it.

the reflections only come into play when out side with direct light and that can be solved by moving 3 in no directly facing it.

to each his own.
i am currently using a 16in monitor for extended desplay and the only reason why i kept my old one was because it was glossy. the pixil pitch was a little smaller on the 16in but still... it made a big difference for me.

Got the glossy one first by accident. Figured I'd just try it since that's what I got. Bad glare sometimes. Annoying reflections of the backlit keyboard in the dark. I have to admit the contrast is nice.

Luckily the store manager waived any fees and gave me a matte screen as a replacement. Haven't look back ever since.

I couldn't decide, so when setting my personal shopping appointment, I told the manager to surprise me. :D So he gave me matte. It's what I had before in my gen1 core duo. I kept saying I wanted a glossy so much as my next one, but...

I am happy with how it turned out. i am way too lazy to clean my screen so much with a glossy screen. Also the glare would drive me nuts!

I bought matte because I can't stand glossy screens, they just annoy me for some reason. Plus photos look terribly over-contrasty too on them.

and thats a bad thing?

and forgot to quote
but who touches there screen anyway?

i think the comparison should be on a current generation matte vs glossy.

if one of them is hi-res led, definitely that will stand out.

I think I read somewhere that the LED screens on the MBPs are considerably brighter than those on the PBs so it's not a fair comparison. Can't remember the link.

I just got a Santa Rosa LED backlit 15" MBP to replace my first gen core duo 2.0Ghz MBP and I can say without a doubt that the new LED based displays are a huge improvement in brightness. It's quite amazing to see the two next to each other. I can't even imagine comparing it to the screens on an old G4 based powerbook.

For Video

I prefer the matte myself. I am an editor and video image is of the utmost importance. The matte screen will represent the video best, as it truly looks. The glossy screen is not a very good representation of the image.

So if you were to watch movies on your Mac, the matte screen would look more like what the movie is supposed to, what the director and DP intended it to look like.

Just my thoughts.

The Apple store near me (Austin, TX) said they will only display and stock the high-res matte 17" units. Of course they don't have any in stock right now, but I think that answers the question of which is more "popular".

Matted screen, yes of course. Something about the Tiger default desktop (aqua blue) on a Macbook Pro that makes it look beautiful. :apple: Silver and blue fits well together.

Matte is the way to go. When I have to use my brothers/sisters MB I dread looking at that screen.

just to make it clear: you can't seriously compare the mba's or mbp's glossy display with the one on the mb.

in any case, i'll go for the matte too after having seen it in the store. the colours just looked much warmer than on the glossy mba (they too didn't have a glossy mbp in stock).

I think matte owners are just alot more vocal about it. Most the threads Ive noticed are started by matte owners.

p.s can the backlit keyboard be disabled?

because that does sound annoying if you were watching a dvd or something.

As far as editing goes, I know as someone who makes music. You need to make sure it sounds correct on a variety of speakers. Graphics people dont seem too concerned that the average laptop owner are looking at there videos and images on glossys.
