This is definitely a big issue with IP4s, I can't recall this many cracked iPhone 3Gs and 3GSs this early in the game!

It's too bad we have to pay $199 and get the whole phone replaced. They need to provide a cheaper option since it's just a piece of glass that couldn't cost more than a few bucks that's broken. Would you pay me $199 for a 3.5 inch piece of glass?

I think the reason for the high price is that the glass is bonded to the LCD. The digitizer, (gorilla) glass, and LCD are all in the front panel. No more cheap glass repair like my 3G was. What about those iFixit guys that hade replacement panels before anybody? Are they selling any yet? The iP4 looks really easy to take apart.

Yeah this phone seems very fragile! And I thought it was going to be really strong given all the hype it had.

Took the drive to the nearest Apple Store this afternoon fully expecting to be forking out $199 for a replacement phone. Got to the store, found a manager. He says "is there something I can help you with?" I pulled out my cracked iPhone and he just stares at it and says "Oh my." Told him I dropped it from about pocket height on the floor at work. He seemed in shock that it had cracked from a short drop and claimed it was the first cracked screen he had seen in person. He then said he was going to check with another manager to see what needed to be done to replace it.

He came back with an unopened box and says "This is your get out of jail free card." Had to verify my AT&T account info and went to an iMac to activate it.

Unfortunately they were out of cases, he even went in the back to see if they had ANY in stock and came back empty handed. Went to the Best Buy down the street and bought a Belkin case to get me through the next day or two until my other one shows up from UPS.

I will consider myself very lucky and this phone will be in a case until I replace it!

Incredibly good news! I was gutted for you at the beginning of the thread but Apple aftercare come to the rescue again. :)

Unbeliveable but I just droped mine from my bathroom counter to the floor and now have a hairline crack on the lower front. :( I called Apple support to see and they want to charge me $30 shipping or buy Apple Care plus the $200. I have had an iPhone since I stood in line and bought the original on day 1 (also had a 3G and an iPad) and never had a broken screen despite several droops over the years. Hope to try an Apple store (or 2) tomorrow and see if they have any replacements. I'm sure I won't luck up and get it for free but hopefully I can get it replaced tomorrow for $200.

The Apple rep said the stores don't have any replacements in stock yet so I may be out of luck (as well as down on luck).

From what I was told, each store has a few backups on hand. I guess these are to replace defective units or for people in situations like mine and yours.

My advice: go into the store and be nice. Just tell them what happened and see what they say. I hope you get lucky as I did!

I think that metal bezel around display on previous generations protected the glass from breaking. I do love the industrial design aspect of i4, but I think the metal bezel will have its comeback on i5 next year.

OP, sorry to hear about your trouble. Hope you'll get your i4 back one way or another.

Sorry that happend man. At least the backs aren't cracking (that we've seen yet). Can't really do anything about glass on the front, but I've been worried about the glass on the back.

there you go.

SQUARE TRADE ppl.. http://www.squaretrade.com/

I pay $5.99/month for 2 years for an i4 32g, which covers EVERYTHING but theft. Water damage, cracked screens, you name it. I can have 2 claims within 2 years, and only $50 for the deductible.

Worst case scenario I'm paying a grand total of $244 if I break my i4 TWICE! They guarantee 24 hr. replacement, or if they can't replace it, they cut you a check for the cost, $599 for the 32g. Very soon, these free replacements by Apple/AT&T will be unheard of.

Get the warranty within 30 days of your i4 purchase and coverage is immediate. After 30 days there is a 90 day waiting period. Makes sense, to avoid scams of getting a warranty after breaking it.

Oh, and you also have the option to pay for the entire warranty in advance for a sale price of $99, instead of the $144 from 5.99 x 24 mo.

This thread scares me. The iPhone 4 is basically a one strike and you're out deal. How are we supposed to never drop our phones from now until there is a next generation iPhone? We shouldn't HAVE to need a case (like the previous iPhones).

U kidding me

Geez these phones are breaking like crazy

Are you kidding me? There are few people reporting that their phone screen cracked after being dropped and you think the iPhones are "breaking like crazy." Out of about 1.5 million units sold you saw handful of people complaining of cracked screen. How is that breaking like crazy? Also what can you expect from glass. Sure it would be nice if they were made out of sapphire crystal, but that's cost prohibitive. I'm sure there are weak points on these glass faceplates that would cause it to crack more readily if it lands on that right spot.

that's actually not that bad. you can EASILY ebay it for at least 200, probably will go for way more.

The stores do have replacement stock. I know because I just had my cracked phone replaced at a store in ny. The phone was damaged when I got it! ;)

Needless to say this phone needs protection.

i'm not.. i'm careful with my phones.

the one time that my 3GS fell was because i was careless with it. i was at work and it fell out of my pocket. once i get the iPhone 4, i will put on a case for work only. other than that, i'm going naked :D

I'm just a little upset that Apple sells a product knowing it needs to be put in a case but one of the selling points is the material the glass is made out of.

Glass is glass. :( I feel for you. I'm hoping my bumper gets here soon; not the best protection, but some nonetheless. I rarely drop my phone but I know I need at least something now that like 99% of the phone is glass.

The iphone is made out of glass... What did you expect Apple to do? I'm sure you knew it was made out of glass before you purchased it.
