It's too bad we have to pay $199 and get the whole phone replaced. They need to provide a cheaper option since it's just a piece of glass that couldn't cost more than a few bucks that's broken. Would you pay me $199 for a 3.5 inch piece of glass?
rtdgoldfish said:Took the drive to the nearest Apple Store this afternoon fully expecting to be forking out $199 for a replacement phone. Got to the store, found a manager. He says "is there something I can help you with?" I pulled out my cracked iPhone and he just stares at it and says "Oh my." Told him I dropped it from about pocket height on the floor at work. He seemed in shock that it had cracked from a short drop and claimed it was the first cracked screen he had seen in person. He then said he was going to check with another manager to see what needed to be done to replace it.
He came back with an unopened box and says "This is your get out of jail free card." Had to verify my AT&T account info and went to an iMac to activate it.
Unfortunately they were out of cases, he even went in the back to see if they had ANY in stock and came back empty handed. Went to the Best Buy down the street and bought a Belkin case to get me through the next day or two until my other one shows up from UPS.
I will consider myself very lucky and this phone will be in a case until I replace it!
Unbeliveable but I just droped mine from my bathroom counter to the floor and now have a hairline crack on the lower front.I called Apple support to see and they want to charge me $30 shipping or buy Apple Care plus the $200. I have had an iPhone since I stood in line and bought the original on day 1 (also had a 3G and an iPad) and never had a broken screen despite several droops over the years. Hope to try an Apple store (or 2) tomorrow and see if they have any replacements. I'm sure I won't luck up and get it for free but hopefully I can get it replaced tomorrow for $200.
The Apple rep said the stores don't have any replacements in stock yet so I may be out of luck (as well as down on luck).
Sorry that happend man. At least the backs aren't cracking (that we've seen yet). Can't really do anything about glass on the front, but I've been worried about the glass on the back.

Geez these phones are breaking like crazy

This thread scares me. The iPhone 4 is basically a one strike and you're out deal. How are we supposed to never drop our phones from now until there is a next generation iPhone? We shouldn't HAVE to need a case (like the previous iPhones).
I'm just a little upset that Apple sells a product knowing it needs to be put in a case but one of the selling points is the material the glass is made out of.
