Contrary to all these stories, and I do believe them, I just dropped mine four or so feet to the pavement and it was fine. There is a chip on the plastic edging around the back glass lip but aside from that its fine.

wow a piece of technology broke when you dropped it onto the floor? unbelievable! i wonder what would happen if i dropped my macbook onto the floor from three feet up. if the screen broke, that wouldnt make any sense!

My 13" aluminium unibody MacBook has fallen 3 times, all of 'm from around 1,5 m/4,9 ft (1 time even not straight down but had a short flight) all times on a hard floor, from which once even on a stone floor...
It is still not broken, only a little dent on the aluminium, it landed 2 times from 3 on a corner.
Last time it has fallen is almost a year ago now... never again I hope.
I'm a 2m tall guy and in that time I used my laptop in an active working space, not save on 1 space or desks...

I still can't get through to my Apple store tonight. I dropped mine off my lap and have impact cracking on the bottom right.

Is 199.00 the rate Apple will charge to repair/replace? Thanks!

Just got back from my local Apple store. They were very kind to me, which they were not obligated to be, and replaced my cracked iPhone 4 for free.

Needless to say I was thrilled, but I made another genius appt for tomorrow :( I have yellowing in the bottom left, not much more than the circumference of a pushpin head, but it is visible when the screen is white.

Also, bumpers are a scarce item, so I ponied up $29 for iPod socks to keep me safe for now :)

how'd u get it free??? what apple store??

I got the Square Trade warranty. For $6, it will give me some peace of mind. I'm careful with my things, never had a problem with my 3G/3GS, but that's why they're called accidents.

Park City in Lancaster. Pa.

From what I understand, the Genius's have the ability to offer the first replacement like this for free. After that you pay $199.

I acted like I always do, truthful and courteous. Doesn't promise a thing but I am sure they appreciate nice customers.

In a follow up to my previous post I finally made it over to the Apple store today. I seriously did just drop my phone from about 1ft heigh, it must just have landed at the wrong angle. I've dropped my MBP from 4 times the hight when someone tripped over a USB cable and pulled it off the desk, it landed on the screen, my Iphone 3g which I had 2 years has also hit the floor from higher and never had an issue. It must just have been bad luck.

Anyway, the nice guy at the store agreed to replace it for free, he said they could override the charge once but would not be able to do it again. I've just got to pop back in 2 days or so and they'll have it in.

So grateful for him being able to do that.

Got a pretty good scratch on my front iPhone 4 glass and the best I could do at the apple store was 20% off $199 replacement costs for a new phone. 1st store I went to wouldn't even budge and wanted to change me $199 even after speaking with the manager.

So if you get your iPhone replaced for FREE, consider yourself to be extremely lucky ;)

i just found out i have a little tiny scratch on my front screen today, it's not very noticable like the thread starter's iPhone and there is no way I could have caused the scratch, not dropped it or anything but you think they would replace the front screen for free?

I am sure Apple will agree that it happened all by itself and will replace it for you. HAHA If there is actual damage they charge $199 for a swap. :p

haha, its like noticable when theres light on the screen. Am totally pissed that I've got a scratch on it already and my 3G had no scratches on the front screen at all. :(

I'll bet you could sell it on eBay for enough that it would cost you next to nothing to replace it, even without a subsidy.

You got lucky.

I dropped my 15" Powerbook about a foot and a half off the ground, onto carpet, and damaged it so badly that it isn't worth repairing.

I guess I'll stop thinking my Speck Candyshell Case looks and feels too builky now that I've seen the pictures of the dropped iPhone 4's. I've got an Elements on order, metal case with shock absorbing interior.

Well for me it is not if I'm going to drop the phone, it is just when. I have SquareTrade on it too.

I feel your pain

I got the new iPhone right as it came. I was walking around with it in my pocket and it swung out and hit a button on the pocket of my jeans. Long story short my screen is shatterd from a little medal button. No drop at all.

Check this out bumped my cabinet with bumper and screen protectors on.

I bumped into the cabinet walking though my home, had my bumper and invisishield on the front and back and when I pulled my phone out of my pocket the back was shattered. This is my second phone the first fell about a foot and the front shattered as well only time I had ever dropped it.

You are lucky Apple replaces all broken phones for free.

You need to get yourself an Otterbox.

Well my iphone4 just fell and face cracked about 30mins ago. My heart broke to pieces as well. I bought it 2 days ago. What's all that bull about aircraft type glass used. Why will a phone have a glass back anyway? It's an amazing phone but the shape is too square and ugly. The 3GS was prettier. What do I do now? I live in west africa. No apple store here. Anyone know an online store that sells the screens.

Went to the apple store in Knoxville today because I shattered the whole front of my iPhone 4... I went in hoping to be shown some grace but also prepared to be the $200 replacement fee if needed. Spoke with a genius and took complete responsibility and asked my options for getting it repaired. She came back and said she would extend me a courtesy and replace my phone at no charge! I was so excited and thanked her repeatedly and thanked the manager. I knew I didn't deserve a free replacement and they were more than generous! I couldn't be more excited right now!

I went to pull my iPhone 4 out of my pocket today at work, it slipped out of my hand and hit the floor. Couldn't have fallen more than three feet. Picked it up to find about 1/4 of the front glass completely shattered.

I cannot believe my luck. I had ordered a case and it shows it will be delivered to my house on Monday. I figured I could survive a weekend with a naked iPhone. My old 2G survived 3 years with no case, dropped it a few times. Not a single scratch on the screen and the thing kept on ticking.

I called Apple just to see what they would say. I figured I was basically out of luck. They told me I can bring it back to the Apple store and they will swap it out for another one for $199. Not too bad a deal I guess. Just sucks that my phone is 2 days old and I already need to replace it.

I'm not complaining about the replacement price. I think it is very fair considering I dropped the phone and I don't expect Apple to give everyone a free phone that breaks theirs. I'm just a little upset that Apple sells a product knowing it needs to be put in a case but one of the selling points is the material the glass is made out of. I consider myself extremely careful with all my electronics. Everything I own is basically in mint condition, from electronics to my car.

I guess what I'm getting at is even if you consider yourself a careful person, BUY A CASE FOR YOUR iPHONE 4!!!!!

Tomorrow afternoon I will be taking a 3 hour drive to the closest Apple store to buy my replacement phone. It will be staying in its box until UPS drops off my case on Monday morning.

On a side note, I am guessing I give them my cracked iPhone and they give me a new one?? Or are they able to replace the screen in the store yet?? Anyone had a similar experience??
guys never replace your 3GS for the Iphone 4, I have never had a complaint about apple but when Iphone 4 came out, what a garbage, good try apple but I'll never replace my 3GS for this piece of glass which is Iphone 4

I think it's hilarious that you dug up this thread just to make this comment.
