I project Apple with redesign the speakers to be front facing on iPad and iPhone in the year 2023 that's a rumor I heard.

Interesting that there is still a headphone jack on this. Why would they keep it on the iPad but drop it from the phone?

The iPad Air isn't in desperate need of internal space

Apple doesn't make devices to please those who are willing to purchase s**t. I think Kindle Fire is good enough for you.

Lmao!

You do realize how small 0.1mm is, right? Could easily just be tolerance in the machining of the case. I doubt you'd even be able to tell the difference between an Air 2 and 3 side by side based on dimensions alone.

Tbh, people said the difference in thinness between the iPhone 6 and 6S was negligible, but I noticed it immediately upon picking up a 6S. Just feels chunkier. Not a deal breaker at all, but everyone has their own tolerance for what feels "different", whether that be in a negative, or positive manner. Although if we're being honest, 0.1mm is almost as small as it gets ;)

You are talking about dimension right? not talking into consideration weight? Who knows that 0.1mm might add some weight? All I care is the iPad Air-3 if not less, should definitely not weigh more than the iPad Air-2 ! Period !

Seems like Apple is responding to the downward spiral of the iPad sales by going all out on this new iPad Air model.
They are adding about everything they possibly can, if it comes with support for Apple Pencil and fully featured A9X it will be a beast.

But will that change anything? I guess the Pencil part will make Apple sell more units, but the big problem with iPad sales is that each model is simply too good. I know a lot of people with iPad 2 and they still find them to more than good enough for what they use it for. They will all grab themselves a new iPad down the road, but not until the one they already have is falling in some way or another.

Compared to the iPhone, the iPad is considered a secondary devices or a "luxury" device they can't afford to replace as often as their primary and most personal device being their phone. Combine that with the fact that iPad has been so great for so many generations whereas most people do not feel any real need for upgrading even their old iPad 2's, Apple will have a really hard time making people upgrading these as often as Apple would like them to.

Apple is also to blame in terms of the software. The home screen and the utilisation of the screen real estate is getting really long in the tooth. I do understand that Apple do not put much attention to the home screen and the whole "springboard" as users spend 99,99% of their time within actual apps so what's the real point in wasting time on changing the home screen / springboard when users are only seeing it for a split second while their launch one of their apps.

But looking at the iPad Air, and especially iPad Pro those huge icons with tons of wasted space between them is getting rather ridiculous.

Soon they will sell the I-weight to give some weight to their products to avoid them flying away upon a breeze...

Owning an ipad 3 and a mini 2, this version with 4speakers sounds interesting but will it be overpriced?

I could see them not releasing a new one for 2 years. But that depends on how quickly they can get force touch to larger screens for a decent cost on large scale production.

Hopefully they'll go all out for IOS 10?

I suspect Pencil support is coming too. Its basically a smaller Pro.

iPad Air 3 - Pencil support, Smart Connector support, 4 speakers
iPad Pro 2 - 3D Touch

Based on those pics, it's going to be ANOTHER year of the super boring 2012 iPhone 5 chamfered edges?

Please Apple, leave the chamfered edge design in the past, time to get with the program and update the design language. This should look like an iPhone 6/6S with curved glass. Spare me the spiel about curved glass for swiping on your phone, you can do that on the iPad too.

I refuse to update my Air 2 until there's actually a fresh design from a cosmetic standpoint. Adding speakers and a flash to the existing design doesn't count - I want something entirely new to look at.

Hope it becomes a smaller iPad Pro with same resolution and Pencil support. In the summer we get iOS X and a mostly free filesystem with USB support. And Xcode ("pencil your app").

What are you going to do when they update the iPhone 7 to be more like the 5/5S again? One thing is certain, it's not going to look like the 6/6S.

Next to watchOS, tvOS and even MacOS, it is time for PadOs or IPOS or something like that.
It is time for apple too build a OS for the newer Ipads, that is compatible with IOS, but makes better use of the screensize, filemanagement and could emulate the GUI of MacOs when a keyboard with trackpad is attached.(new keyboardcover/Maccover?) this way developpers will be encouraged to release ios/arm based programms/apps that can match their MacOs counterparts.
The smart connector is the key to acheive this and would in the long run allow apple to release arm based macs and hybrid tablets/macbooks.

I like the chamfered edges design. I think it looks a lot better than the 6/6+, so I would rather they keep it.

Why not?
It could very well be a seamless iphone 6/s that is thinner, made of new materials and with smaller bezels/chins.

It doesn't need more resolution. That will simply put a strain on the processor without a benefit to anyone that does't look at the iPad from 3 inches away. iPad 3 got the higher resolution screen and it was laggy. I actually enjoyed using my IPad 2 more once the novelty of a retina screen wore off.

I agree the 6>6S difference is more noticeable, but it's also a much larger change percentage-wise. There's a ~3% thickness increase, and an ~10.5% weight increase, so the relative difference is significant. But for something the size of an iPad, we're talking fractions of a percentage increase for the width (about .05% if the 0.1mm is true) and likely a similar magnitude change to the weight. Relative sizes are going to play a lot into the perception of how much it changes.

It's simple.
If Apple wants me to buy another iPad, give me a pen on an iPad Air or Mini.
I will not carry a tablet that is as big as my Macbook Air.
I want a tablet for notes.

exactly, I have a macbook pro, why in the world would I want an iPad that has as big a footprint as that? might as well take my MacBook with me

Interesting observation. I suspect they want to give it to the iPhone first, but given the device's size and the weirdness using corded headphone with it—the cord dangling in the air—the iPad a great fit for wireless. Probably in the iPad Air 4.

You will have your MacBook with you, but also your iPad .
Apple has plenty of chances to reduce bezels on the iPad Air en iPad Pro, reduce weight, the iPad pro can be slimmed down by 0.8 mm, etc.
There will be a time iPad and MacBook will be a hybrid device.

Fraction of a mm bigger... It's too big!
Ounce heavier... It's too heavy!

Doubt you'd notice a difference unless you took a ruler and scale to the device. It's lighter and thinner than every previous generation of iPad you owned before the Air 2, enough said.

Don't understand the whole comparison with the iPad Pro if the Air 3 works with the Pencil and comes with a keyboard. Pro is intended for content creation, enterprise, etc... Secondary (and smaller) market is people that want a bigger screen.

There is always some cannibalization that occurs when a new or revised product launches. People are going to buy what fits their needs or what they can afford. Doesn't mean the demise of either.

It's possible, I think it'll look closer to the Nexus 6P. When I think iPhone 6/6S I think super roundy. I don't think the 7 will continue to be like that. Certaintly round-ish, but not super round. Do you like my technical terms?

Yeah that is very true. Apple shot themselves in the foot by making the 6 so thin and light :p

The width is acceptable; the weight however, is not. 6S is chunky chunky chunky.
