Perhaps although you do realise that apple was behind with its resolution on the iphone 3gs when it quadrupled it with the iphone 4 ? 960 × 640 is high, but not that high taking into account the 640*480 my acer n310 had in 2005/6 .

Now manufacturers are anouncing/releasing 720p screen of that size , yet that means still 3.5 times less then what you would need when wanting a 2047* 1536 , and that in a couple of months? Massive production readY? I dont think so.

I think they are going to improve the way ipad/iphone handles lower res apps and perhaps a 1.5 times higher resolution, but I dont see them introducing 2xxx resolutions early next year.

They will do 2x res updates whenever feasible. The factors are producing mass quantity at reasonable prices. Whenever Apple can achieve that you will see them do the same thing they did with iPhone 4. That is why iPad 2 won't have the Retina Display but iPad 3 will!

Now AFTER that, maybe those two factors won't be feasible to take a screen that is already retina, then double it again! Ya, in that case maybe they will go with a more incremental update in a while. We will see. But the fact that they are adding support for retina screens in 10.7 Lion tells you that this is the road they are headed down and I LIKE IT! They are righting a wrong that has persisted in the computer industry for 30+ years, resolution independence! And now in 10.7 it is coming BACK TO THE MAC! :D

Now we just need 4K video!

The new Thunderclap MBP's smack of overpriced toys.

2012 will give Apple another shot at getting them right.
