I would normally dismiss these rumours but boy... yet another alleged Touch ID on the back is really getting me worried. That would be a colossal design failure if Apple go this route. If Touch ID on the screen isn't possible yet, I'd much rather they waited until it was.

I'm hoping that Apple are releasing lots of fake design specifications, so they can try to whittle down who are leaking the specs. Really, really hoping.

That sensor sits way too low. How would you reach it when holding it normally? I would say, it's the magnetic connector for charging like on the Watch.

Actually thinking of my 7+ it sits perfectly to unlock with my index finger since you tend to hold the iPhone Plus mostly on the lower half due to its size unless you got King Kong hands i guess

i believe if this is the real iphone the back hole is for wireless charging, because aluminum isnt good when it comes to wireless charging so that hole isnt finger reader ( i hope not )

I can promise you, Touch ID will not be on the back.

Honestly.... They probably are going to do it. Until they can figure out how to embed it into the screen on the front.

Ugh this sucks. No more leaving the phone on the table and using Touch ID. Has to be held.

Is it possible that the space in the back is for some type of (wireless) charging and not touch ID?

This is more likely to be a contact point for inductive charging than Touch ID.
I agree with you that the hole on the back of the case may be for something else other than a TouchID element. Like you say, it could be for an inductive charging point.

I wonder if this is for another sensor altogether. Perhaps a forward facing 3D sensor/scanner?

I was wondering whether it was for wireless charging too. it is going to be disappointing if Apple have been forced to follow Samsung and place the fingerprint reader on the back.

Don't you think the design is locked by now? You can't have the tooling to manufacture 20 million phones for sale in Sept or Oct and not have a finalized design, can you?

Oh the design has probably been final since 2016. That's why these leaks are happening now because production is starting to pick up for a September release.

There's no way they're still sitting saying "hmmm what should we do with the design?"

Is there a reason to switch to vertical cameras or is that change simply for the sake of change? Honest question.

I think it has to do with augmented reality features. Apple will most probably include AR elements in the camera app. Having vertical dual cameras will increase the 3D depth vertically, rather than horizontally...

If that really is for the fingerprint sensor, there's no hope of switching back to the iPhone. Having it on the back is the most inefficient placement of it possible.

Sorry Apple, but it is definitely a "NO" if touch ID is on the back. I've used Android phones that are like that and it is a pain.

I'm hoping that Apple is just trying to flood the market with false specs of different variations to keep people guessing right up to the official announcement.

I'd love to see Tim Cook come out and show the fingerprint sensor working underneath a bezel-less display and say, "What? You didn't think we were going to put it on the back did you?"

^^^ Something Steve would have done.

Is it possible that the space in the back is for some type of (wireless) charging and not touch ID?

Not likely. If the back is made of glass there won't need to be some special inductive charge point incorporated into the case. That's really only necessary if the back of the phone is steel or aluminum. Also Apple has made it pretty clear they don't want to do inductive charging on the iPhone, they are working on actual wireless charging without a charging mat.
