Dear god, no.

PERHAPS they'll have two versions of this new phone. One aluminium with the *ugh* button on the back and one Stainless Steel with Touch ID integrated into the screen, much like the material differences in the Apple Watch.

Perhaps this could explain away the elevated price and allow them to mitigate the low yield rates for the screen based fingerprint sensor by having it only on the expensive and low volume product.

I don't think Touch ID will be on the back for the simple fact that apple designed phone cases will be all jacked up. If the back is glass then this hole in the back could be under the glass and just a flush plate for wirelesss charging.

Is there a reason to switch to vertical cameras or is that change simply for the sake of change? Honest question.
One rumour I read said it was for VR/AR, so that the lenses would be positioned horizontally if worn in some kind of headset. No idea if there's any truth in that, though, or indeed what the benefit would be.

Understand the frustration at Touch ID on the back, it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me but would obviously prefer it to be embedded under the screen. Not sure if small bezels are enough on their own to differentiate this from the 7s which is rumoured.

Please no. Please. Everyone unlocks their phone with their thumb or finger if laid flat. PLEASE don't do this, Apple.

Putting Touch ID on the back would be a new low, but I love the less curved steel frame. So if Touch ID stays in front, I'm in!

An earlier article about the Hwehuawheehaiuahwe Mi6 stated it has an ultrasonic fingerprint reader under the faux home button (albeit within a bezel) so, if they can do it and still have bezels, there's a possibility that Apple could implement something similar without bezels and have the inductive charging bidness either in the middle back of the new phone or under the Apple logo and call it AppleCharge.

There's simply no way possible that Apple would do something as bone-headed as placing the sensor on the back. I don't even think that Tim Cook could possibly be that out of touch. A rear located sensor requires the unnatural holding of the phone. Almost everyone holds the phone on the sides, making the current location of the scanner very natural and easy to reach with the thumb. IMO, a sensor located on the rear would essentially require an entirely new re-programming of users in how they handle their phone.

Just not seeing it.

Apple Meeting Recording:

What is the biggest issue with the iPhone?

The glass screen. It is the most replaced part.

Ok, let's look at fixing that.

You know how much we make replacing screens?
Wow. That's a lot...

Yes, mate?
Can you make the whole phone out of glass?

Touch ID on the back is fine. Really it will be a perfectly usable placement. The bigger issue I have is that they didn't make it in the Apple logo. It would have been so clean looking. Now it will have a circle in the middle of the back which looks worse.
How is it useful when I have it dash mounted or when I have it lying flat on a table? Answer: Its not.

Mark my words:

This will be the new aluminum back design for the 7s/7s Plus. No glass back but the round coin in the corner will be for wireless charging. TouchID will stay on the front.

New iPhone 8/X/whatever will have similar (square) design language with glass back, new full front display etc.

All phones will look different to the current generation. But 7s/7s Plus just subtle compared to 7/7Plus. Think about the 7s/7s Plus as a big 5s/SE design phone and 8/X as a big 4 design phone with glass back and a huge display.

Super disappointing if they decide to put touch ID on the back. That simply won't work for me. If it's the case, I may need to skip this year. Not by choice of course.

Never said it was useful just that it is usable. I don't want it on the back but I'm not gonna act like its some horrible experience that would keep me from buying it. I've held android phones with fingerprint scanners on the back. They are comfortable and easy to use.

i'm sure this is one of their many ideas..they might have no choice but to put it on the back

Not even just that: Apple Pay will suffer. It'd be extremely cumbersome to put out against the debit terminal with your finger between the phone and the debit machine.

However, I don't have much faith in Apple anymore. They don't have anyone who's saying that it's not good enough anymore and they're pushing out products that are still good, but not great the way they used to be.

Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe they needed to make some internal changes to accommodate some new components? Like how Samsung put the fingerprint sensor next to the camera. That's likely more an engineering constraint than a design faux pas on their part.
