Another "iPhone Killer" steps up to the plate - trounces all competitors (The Matrix)

Is 'better apps!' really the main argument against Android now?

Android gained some serious ground last year. People are taking notice. It is a formidable player. It is not going to play second fiddle to iOS any longer.

Apple needs to step it up.

It did happen you just did not notice. Android phones now outsell iPhone. Obviously, with so many Android phones no single phone can outsell iPhone but it may cause gradual demise of iPhone. Apple sticking with a single iOS phone model is a deliberate marketing strategy. This creates extra buzz and fervent following. If Apple were releasing different iOS phones ,say, every quarter. People would stop paying attention to it. That said, iPhone might be a single most popular phone but the strategy may eventually kill the platform.

There will always be a line on launch day for the new iPhone for a few reasons.

There is only 1 iPhone
It happens once a year
Fanboys
Its still a good phone

Android dont have lines for a new releases because....well, there is a new release every couple or few months it seems. However, the Galaxy S alone has now sold 10 million.

I can see Apple losing some customers because of the compitition getting much better and catching up but they arent going to be hurting.

LOL OP

There hasn't been an iPhone killer...ever

Although, it is nice of Motorola to put forward an effort/attempt to somehow "kill" the iPhone!

I've heard the term "iPhone killer" since August of '07, and hasn't happened yet.

However, all the competition is good :)

since 2008 the only places I hear iPhone killer is from Apple fanboys and then some media sites trying to get the iPhone fanboys all mad about it to get more hits.

Take away the iPhone fanboys/girls hardly anyone even cares.

LOL The rep makes sure he says, "Adobe Flash" as if that's a selling feature. Fail.

It's a unique concept of docking your phone to a laptop shell so you can use it as a real laptop. Good if you need to do lots of typing on the go, but these days who really does lots of typing on the go?

I'm fine with an iPhone or April 2011 iPad on the go and I certainly don't think it's any type of 'killer'.

the Atrix is serious awesomeness.

i mean, full desktop internet browsing? this phone is one iteration away from completely replacing the desktop in many ways, sans video editing/heavy gaming, etc.

if i were an AT&T subscriber, i'd buy this phone in a heartbeat.

iPhone releases new phone specs once a year. HTC, Samsung, Google, etc. announce new hardware on a monthly basis. Around this time every year, the specs of the iPhone have worn off as competition puts out phones one after the other in an attempt to out-spec the iPhone....then, along comes Apple in June and amazes us again! The manufacturers have yet another year to play catch up. Rinse, lather, repeat!

The Motorola Atrix (The Matrix) has been unveiled, and I have to admit, I'm quite impressed.

It's heads and shoulders above lesser "iPhone Killers" like the Nexus S and Galaxy S.

A Dual Core Cortex A9 processor paired with Nvidia Graphics

1GB of RAM

A 4" display with a resolution close to the Retina Display - 960x540 = 1/2 1080p (1920x1080)

A Whopping 1930mAh Battery

Complete with a Laptop Dock offering 8 hrs of battery life while simultaneously charging the phone.

"You can go on a long flight and watch two full length movies on the laptop dock using the Atrix and its processor. Once you’re done watching you will have a fully charged phone."

This is the smartphone alternate to get if you are too impatient to wait and see what Apple has up it's sleeve for the iPhone 5.

Who said the Atrix was an iPhone killer? It's in a league all it's own.

Mark my words. The term _____ killer is always a personal opinion. A piece of electronic can not objectively kill another electronic device. It's all to the user's opinion what device kills what.

Sorry, but you're dead wrong here. When the media uses terms like "iPhone killer", they're talking about a phone that might actually take the iPhone's place in the market: that is, literally "kill" iPhone sales.

Calling the Atrix a "better phone" is a subjective opinion. Calling it a product "killer" is objectively measurable.

No they are talking about a phone that a sufficient number of people prefer and gravitate to over the iPhone.

Like others have pointed out, the term has been used by journalists since 2007, before Andriod even showed up to compete with the iPhone. No sane person at that time would have expected those phones to completely topple the iPhone's sales and kill Apple smartphone. Think back to how much momentum apple had at launch. What journalists were refering to is a phone that a sufficient number of people prefer and gravitate to over the iPhone.

If you want to use the objective term sales, there were multiple iPhones, and smartphones launch at different times. The Driod X phones came out during the iPhone 3GS, and once they did, they sucked up all the media attention and consistently outsold the 3GS on a week to week basis up till the iPhone 4 came out. So by that measure, they objectively outsold and "killed" the iPhone 3GS, but then the iPhone 4 killed them.

But again, I think sales is the wrong way to look at it. There's too many Andriod and Windows 7 phones for anyone phone to singlehandedly kill the iPhone. But what specific phones can do is provide an option that outdoes the iPhone and that many people prefer over the iPhone, causing the iPhone to bleed users. Andriod is already outselling the iPhone, so in that sense, it's working.

Almost all. I'm not sure if it has a hdmi out. If it does, then it would be perfect.

It does have HDMI according to the site I read about it.

There is also a dedicated multimedia dock available with three USB ports and an HDMI port, so you can hook up a keyboard, mouse, speakers and monitor for working at your desk/office. Or you can connect the Atrix 4G to your television and use it's "Entertainment Center" feature to show photos, music and videos. Though most copy-protected content still can't be shown.

This is the site:

I love my Iphone better than any other phone out there and I hate that because I have never been nor will ever be a Apple fan, but the Iphone is the best phone out there hands down for me anyway.

But, I gotta say I REALLY like the Atrix and I am going to keep tabs on it as time goes on. The dock thing is really cool and a feature I would use a lot since my laptop is brokeded and im tied to my desk top now.

It is confusing to compare iOS to Android. Lets keep it to companies/products shall we?

The OS is just a feature of a phone. We wouldn't do sales figures based on the GPU or the camera of a phone, why would we do an OS comparison?

The main key here is that there are many sales battles fought on many different levels. Apple is winning every single one of them in terms of profit.

iOS vs Android - Despite Android finally taking a lead, it still pulls in less profit. Apple makes far more per an iOS device than Google does per an Android device.

iPhone vs Individual Smartphones - The iPhone 4 is STILL the top smartphone out there. 1.7 Million in 3 days, 3 Million in a month.

In comparison:

iPhone 4 - 1.7 Million in 3 days
iPhone 3GS - 1 Million in 3 days
Droid X - 300K in 7 days
Droid 2 - Flop (No sales figures, estimated around 50k)
Droid 1 - 250k in 7 days
EVO 4G - 70k in 2 days (Hilarious 'Mammoth' sales statement from Sprint)
HTC Incredible - Est. 150k ("Would of sold more than the Droid 1..." quote from Verizon)
Galaxy S - 1 Million in 3 weeks
Nexus One - 80k in a month

You mention that some of these phones were 'iPhone killers' (Droid X/2 and HTC Incredible) when none of them combined could even top the 3GS sales figure.

The fact is, Apple is holding their own with just one phone per a year. That is amazing compared to the fact that they are dealing with fierce competition. In the OS world, they are fighting against Google, Nokia, Blackberry, Palm, and now Win7.
In the manufacture world they are fighting against countless brands.
In the US wireless market, they have JUST announced their 2nd carrier after competing with 3 other large ones.

+1

Another sad fact: Apple makes more money/profit with the App store alone ($400 Million, about 1% of apple's gross profit) compared to Motorola Mobile division ($3 million profit).

This is last week's news, but yeah, it looks to be a very nice phone on paper. Easily the best on AT&T and perhaps the world once released. It looks to be far more future-proof than the recently announced Verizon iPhone. Just so grateful it is coming to my carrier. While V is getting a 6-7 month old phone, we get one even more advanced and beats out the Droid Bionic in a performance test.

There is no such thing as an iPhone killer and who knows what bloatware AT&T will have for it?

lol I love how people still like to throw the words "iphone killer" around... you would think people would learn from the first 100 times this has failed. Especially now that the iphone is on the largest network in the US along with the second largest.

This may not be it but iPhone has WAY MORE competition than ever before and they will be eclipsed by another device, if not several device, as Apple is just playing games with what it could really do!

I am sick of our devices being tied to iTunes!

There IS a iPhone killer on the way and if the iPhone 5 is what the rumors say, we can see the killer just around the corner. The only advantage the iPhone has is the apps, that is big, too!

Although I like the idea of a mobile phone acting as the (a?) CPU for a laptop dock, the physical arrangement looks awkward. I can imagine it will be quite the pain in the a$$ to access the phone around the back of the dock - what happens if you receive a call? I bet soon after its release we'll hear reports of mechanical problems with connectors, the Atrix falling off the back of the dock, or users inadvertently smashing the phone as they tilt the dock screen back.

It's just not an elegant solution*, albeit the concept is admirable. Let us hope it spurs Apple into innovating in their new iPhone models rather than simply refining them.

*Edit: An elegant solution would place the phone in a recess on the keyboard of the dock, use the touch screen as the track pad, and have wireless (radio? optical?) communication with the dock as well as wireless charging.

Did you watch the video? You can access all of the phone apps and functions from the laptop screen.

dock looks as sturdy as the iPhone and iPad docks, haven't heard too many complaints or reports of phones falling out...of course real world will determine the reality.

using it as a track pad would be a good idea, I like it. But, what's the point of wireless communication with the dock when you are already hard connected? I don't know of any wireless technologies that transfer data faster or take less power than physical ones.

Matrix, heh never occured to me, I kept wondering where do they come us with such names as "Atrix".

Smart man OP!

then, along comes Apple in June and amazes us again!
I wouldn't say "amazes us". 10 minutes after iPhone 4 was released the disappointment set in and a hundred threads popped up (and continue) about what the iPhone 4 was lacking and what our wish are iPhone 5.

To the OP's point: The M(Atrix) is the first phone that made my jaw drop. If reviews look good this is my next phone.

I would definitely consider this phone if it came to T-Mobile. For now, I will stick with the myTouch 4G. Free wireless tethering is lovely. :)

I predict not this year.

Interesting take on Apple's "revolutionary" products. Now Jobs loves to use the words magical for more brainwashing.

At Apple, everything is "revolutionary"
By Ed Bott | January 6, 2011, 10:54am PST

Apple launched its App Store for the Mac today. The press release announcing that the store was open for business includes this bit of puffery: “The Mac App Store brings the revolutionary App Store experience to the Mac…”

Revolutionary. Hmmm, where have I heard that word before? Oh yeah, in just about every Apple press release since 1999. Apple has declared a revolution for software, for Macs and mice, for its CD and DVD drives, for iPods and iPhones and iPads, for syncing music to a portable player, and even for its Internet strategy. Several of those “revolutionary” products no longer exist, and others were simply refined implementations of technologies that had already been done by others. No matter. If it comes from Cupertino, it must be revolutionary.

Here, from the Apple PR archives, is a little trip down memory lane. A word to the wise: If you plan a drinking game around an Apple press event, you might want to think twice before you include this word.
