Apple has been forced to delay the launch of its long-rumored AR/VR headset until next year due to thermal issues related to computing power with the processor, according to a new report from The New York Times, citing sources familiar with the matter.
From the report:
Multiple reports in the last several months have indicated that the headset would not launch this year, despite speculation Apple could announce it during WWDC that starts on Monday. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported in January that the headset faced a potential delay until 2023 due to development issues related to performance and thermals.
Apple's board has reportedly received a demo of the mixed-reality headset, indicating that despite reports of development issues, the headset is nearing completion. While Apple is highly unlikely to announce the headset on Monday during WWDC, it will announce iOS 16 and new tools for developers to create hands-free experiences and expanded use cases of Shortcuts and QR codes, according to the report.

Sir/madam, this is a Wendy’s.Good for Apple. Some analysts believe Apple will singularly super charge the move to mixed reality spaces. I think it will also accelerate societal technology division. Most things when they are first released "look" like they suck 10 years after they are released. The first iPhone looks pretty wack now but at release it was groundbreaking despite its flaws. People need to stop demanding for things to be so awe inspiring when they don't even play a role in its development. Most people are just whiners about every thing. Whenever this not announced product that unless you are an engineer or involved in its manufacturing don't really know what stage develop is at need to chill until it is announced/ released.Unfortunately that Apple that had to succeed has passed.
Imagine if the iMac, OS X, iTunes, or the iPod had been a flop. Apple couldn't have afforded it.
Now they can afford to put out mediocre software and launch things when not ready, like the Apple Watch when it first came out.
The AR/VR processing will likely be in your iPhone, where there's an A-series cpu/gpu, a wireless connection to the internet, and a battery with decent capacity to power all that. Not surprising about thermal heat as the mini gets pretty toasty while running some apps. I can’t imagine that it would be pleasant to wear on your head and sweat everywhere.

This is exactly what I have been hearing from friends who work in this space. If we’re lucky, they’re going to delay it another 10 years and then forget about it. I’ve worked with this technology since the 90s on and off. It never got to the point where it’s really suitable for the mass market. There are specialized applications for certain markets which make sense, but for everyone? No. There is a study from a year or two ago that pointed out about 1% of users buying AR/VR gear keep using it and the rest ends on a shelf never touched again.
Whenever we do new AR/VR stuff, it’s more for tech demos, such as “interactive repair manuals” or stuff like this:
We used VR tech to train astronauts for docking maneuvers to the ISS. But that’s a very, very limited area of application. For more general use, you want at least a treadmill to “move around” in virtual worlds. Most people try these and then lose interest after 20 minutes or so.
If anything, the future of AR is more on phones and tablets. It’s nice to go sight-seeing, pull out the phone and get some info about an ancient building, pyramid or whatever. No one needs to wear glasses for this.
what people want is not even remotely viable. The technology is simply not there, and it won't be for decades.
Pretty much this. A proper solution would be contact lenses, which is so far off the radar, we’ll have Amazon deliveries to Mars before it happens. So let’s talk glasses… why wear glasses if you don’t need them? And even if you do, can I get AR glasses to correct my eyesight? Is Apple going to be the new Ray-Ban or <insert favorite manufacturer here>? Would I want iEyeGlasses with me all day long, even to the bathroom where Apple uses the camera to scan for CP? Probably not. One thing is for sure, Apple will offload the heavy processing to the iPhone. But that still requires cameras, minimal processing power and batteries in the glasses which makes them uncomfortable.Exactly my feeling and why none of this moves the needle for me.
I'd be into AR if it's super well integrated into my existing glasses and without significant drawbacks.
I'm someone who still doesn't want an Apple Watch because I don't want to deal with its idiosyncrasies and charging every night, etc.
We aren't even remotely close to what I would want out of AR and the devices and integration.
Ah. Yes that makes more sense in short term. 👍The AR/VR processing will likely be in your iPhone, where there's an A-series cpu/gpu, a wireless connection to the internet, and a battery with decent capacity to power all that.
What do you mean? I always find apple products to be much more heat-proof than other plastic covered device and such. Not to mention way more silent.El oh el. An Apple product with poor thermals......who could have guessed? 🤣
You're excited about a more Darwinian future that is more corrupt and further leaves behind those less well off?
I honestly have a hard time getting excited about any of this, especially when I see so many around me in Idaho struggling to make basic ends meets. Costs are through the roof, their jobs aren't keeping up on pay and just paying bills and eating and keeping their transportation costs covered is taking up all their bandwidth.
That's not just normal working folks either, but small business owner friends.
I find nothing "exciting" about furthering the current divisions and disparities, sorry
My advice to you. Get out of Idaho.
So they should get a set of Google Goggles and just apply an Apple logo and use a neon color. Make sure it’s not a clear picture.Apple probably won't show the actual goggles because it would be copied. They should preview RealityOS.
The mask in the article is not a leak. It’s just artwork commissioned by Macrumors to go with the articles until they have something more concrete. It looks more like scuba goggles. If it was real right now, I'm sure we would have seen a better design leaked. That mask in the article is terrible.
I had an intern years ago. She was an English Major at an east coast university. Her Senior year. She badly wanted to work in high end media / Tech. A colleague asked me to consider her for an advanced internship at NBC in Washington DC. Her resume was thin on Tech but my gut told me she’d do well. My “gut” was not always right, but this time I was spot on. We kept in touch over the years. Like many career oriented Millenials, she picked up a Masters degree and hopped eagerly from one opportunity to the next. Including, Two Years at the Pentagon (that required a Top Secret clearance) in Multi-Media. 2 Years at the State Department working in E-Diplomacy. (Much international travel) 3. Years as a Vice President at a large US Ad agency, And 2 years as Director of Social Media at a Global Firm. Last summer we talked and she was ready for a new challenge. 8 weeks later she had landed at Amazon HQ 2 with a six figure signing bonus.
The point of this tale is that for the educated and ambitious there are many opportunities. You say you “have a hard time getting excited about any of this” . That is understandable. Many live in fear of modernity. Those who are not excited about the future are irrelevant in the globalized all connected era . The coming Tsunami of mixed reality AR/VR, advanced machine learning, automation and quantum computing will wash away jobs by the millions. The poorly educated have little chance. Nor are the educated classes immune to these developments.
My advice to you. Get out of Idaho.
Cheers from Virginia.
