No. The poster said that an Etch a Sketch from the 60's invented the stylus prior to Apple, saying that Apple was copying off of that. The whole comment was ridiculous, so I followed up with another ridiculous comment. You could make the argument that the Note is a copy of the Newton, but no I am not saying that.

The thing you fail to understand is evolution. Companies including Apple build upon other companies' ideas. Even prior to man there were monkies but they had more hair.

Who cares who came up with it first...but it is clear that the Galaxy Note is the inspiration of stylus input in CURRENT smartphones. There has been little traction for stylus input ever since Apple redefined the smartphone. I would like apple to offer pencil support as it would be beneficial to me.

I understand what evolution is. No, the Newton is not an evolution of the Etch a Sketch. Also, it's monkeys, not monkies.

Curious if other companies (e.g. Google - google glass and Microsoft - hololens) that create DECADE too-early for the hardware ideas get the same benefit of doubt from you?
Sure. Why wouldn't they?

Although Google Glass was a really iffy product, the Hololens had some cool ideas behind it.

No, the Newton is not an evolution of the Etch a Sketch.

Not much difference in 33 years between 1960 Etch a Sketch and 1993 Newton (even Steve Jobs calls it a failure) but huge jump with 2011 Galaxy Note with fully working pen-to-text transcription which is lacking natively on latest iPad Pro.

You do realise the GRiDPad was released in 1989 - Mahy years before the Newton. It featured a Stylus and had hand writing recognition.

Haha your ignorance is unmatched on this site. Right, a huge jump. So advanced that no one uses a stylus or buys a Note. The Note 9 will be a failure just like the Note 8.

There is a wire sticking out of that stylus.

Clues in the name, it's still a Stylus!

It's comments like these that make you lose all credability and show your true colours.
People use a stylus and people buy notes. It's a fact. Saying that no-one does either is ridiculous.

It's way absurd to say Etch a Sketch invented the stylus.

The fact of the matter is, once Apple enables Apple Pencil support to iPhones, it'll diminish another "advantage" of the Note series over the iPHone.

Samsung used to say if you want big screen, check out the Galaxy over the iphone. Not anymore.

Samsung used to say if you want OLED, choose Galaxy over iPhone. Not anymore.

There's no doubt that Samsung creates nice hardware. If they spent all their energy and time on improving Tizen and pushing out great phones irregardless of Apple then I'd have more respect for them.

The difference is Samsung can sell 10 million Notes in a quarter and is considered a HUGE SUCCESS, while if Apple sold under 40 Million units opening weekend all the fandroids scream about what a failure Apple is, and DOOMED to FAIL. The irony is endless here, Apples makes profits, Samsung gets the most sales from cheap smartphones to third world countries, not premium smartphones.

Like I stated in another comment, there were much larger devices that could use styluses. The Newton made a device you could hold with one hand, a stylus in another and no tether.

Everyone knows that the GRIDPad was really just a ripoff of the Write-Top released in 1987 anyways.

Let's throw the Tandy Zoomer into the frame then. Also released before the Newton ;)

It’s already a failure.
There are bogos, discounts, free accessories and the phone hasn’t even launched.

Oh and and they made the bezels chunkier.

So that is done by the pen hardware, is wha you are implying?

Lol, can't wait to hear how this is groundbreaking and how they're NOT copying Samsung. This is more like Apple buying time to fully copy Samsung. I'll call it now, 2020 Apple will have a Galaxy Note copy, and they will site the popularity of their users using the pencil on their iPhones. It would be way too obvious if they straight brought out their Galaxy Note clone that they already have in the works. Pathetic.
Oh and the other pathetic thing will be, the Apple apologists that trashed the Note for its SPen. And now have all of a sudden, have a new found open mindedness about a stylus on a phone. But just like Apple, they can't just come out and admit to it. They can't just be like, "it's so awesome to have the option of a stylus on a phone." That would just expose them for being shameless hypocrites, so instead, they'll say something like," I guess it's good to have options, but I'll never use it." But we all know full well, they're just dying to have it built in the phone like the Note. Pathetic and shameless.

Samsung fans would not quote units sold but units shipped. That number is bigger for them. They compare Samsung units shipped vs Apple's units sold.

I still remember my friends making fun of me and my iPhone 3G cuz I had to use it without a stylus. Those were the days lol
I just purchased an iPhone 3G and I have to say Apple has lost what made it so great. While I understand technology marches on the current generation of smart phones lost the elegance of the earlier models.

I think the 10 million is cumulative note sales not quarterly.

I believe the note 8 sold between 10-15 million units cumulatively and if s 9 sales can be used as to gauge demand. Note 9 will be luck to ship half that.

People keep telling me that, but I have never seen one being used in public or known anyone who has one. This is in Philadelphia also. Samsung sold an estimated 10 million Note 8 devices. As much as you want to believe that stylus' are hugely popular, the Note 8 didn't sell well at all. You're right though, no one is harsh, a very small number of people use a stylus. That's a little more accurate.

I've never understood why people love the units sold/units shipped/marketshare etc. It's a phone, just buy what suits your needs.

I don't walk around Tesco saying "I'm not going to buy that butter because this butter sells more then that one"

Let's just put this to rest once and for all.

What Jobs was arguing was that if your device requires a stylus to operate, you've failed. Obviously an iPhone doesn't require a stylus to use the interface. You use your fingers. But of course sketching and drawing with your fingers is crude, and you need something more delicate and precise. A pencil.

This is nothing but natural evolution.
They've perfected the touch interface, and now they are moving on to the next step.
[doublepost=1534429548][/doublepost]

Facepalm. No, no, no. At launch, Jobs was referring to a stylus being required to operate the device and its UI, as was common for devices at the time in that Palm-era. He was NOT referring to optional drawing devices, which have been around since the original too (just not as good as the Pencil).

How you’re not getting this I don’t know.

If people are so concerned about being misinterpreted, then they should choose their words more carefully in the first place instead of making impetuous one-liner remarks and waiting for others to cover for them.

Each to their own. I see it all the time. Over 10,000 Note 8's issued in my company.
