Everyone quoting Steve but are vastly overlooking the “you have to get ‘em you put ‘em away you lose ‘em” part. At least the Note has the pen built in for you to slot it back in and has functionality immediately ready with their software when you pull it out which is part of its appeal in the first place. The iPhone won’t have that because Apple won’t create space for it inside their phone when they remove headphone jacks to save that precious space. With the pencil you will be more likely to lose it because of this, also it most likely won’t have the same useful functionality as the Note anyway.

I'm sure way back in 2007 when Steve said "who wants a stylus", it was in reference to HAVING to use a stylus for everything on the phone. And that was back when a phone was a phone with a 3.5" screen. Now we are in phablet territory, it's unreasonable to keep bringing this up and not unreasonable to think people want Pencil compatibility
now.

The "no stylus for 1 Gen. iPhone" strategy was a perfectly fine USP. Now even IF the new iPhone X would support the ApplePencil, no customer is obliged to use it. iOS 12 can still be used without needing one. As for note taking its a neat thing to have though.

LOL. No stylus! We invented multi-touch! 40 second video with all sorts of wrong. Stylus is back and Apple did not invent multi-touch.

Don't forget the original iphone had a tiny screen, and as advanced as it was at the time, it really did not have the horsepower to do all the things it was doing as is.

You must be one of the Apple Haters, for not recognizing Samsung ripping off the Apple Newton & Apple Newton Message Pad. Apple has had styluses and Electronic PDAs at a time when Samsung was still only known for Washing Machines and home appliances.

Like I said, the pathetic and shameless excuses and back pedaling about a stylus being useless on a phone have begun. Disgusting and disgraceful.

You must be one of those Samsung haters that does everything possible to not give Samsung credit for being the innovative company that the industry relies on. Look at the screen on your X and thank your lucky stars Samsung pushed OLED tech to the point where Apple was able to get it at a price that met its greedy standards. Pathetic.

Lol, the desperation. Thanks for proving my point, the shameless excuses have already begun.
I think a lot of what Samsung does is in part at least inspired by Apple, but I will say they no doubt play a role in keeping the industry moving forward. They catch a lot of slack around here but they make great hardware. It's unfortunate they are stuck with Android. Samsung really needs to start investing in their own software (Tizen?).

Lol, can't wait to hear how this is groundbreaking and how they're NOT copying Samsung. This is more like Apple buying time to fully copy Samsung. I'll call it now, 2020 Apple will have a Galaxy Note copy, and they will site the popularity of their users using the pencil on their iPhones. It would be way too obvious if they straight brought out their Galaxy Note clone that they already have in the works. Pathetic.
Oh and the other pathetic thing will be, the Apple apologists that trashed the Note for its SPen. And now have all of a sudden, have a new found open mindedness about a stylus on a phone. But just like Apple, they can't just come out and admit to it. They can't just be like, "it's so awesome to have the option of a stylus on a phone." That would just expose them for being shameless hypocrites, so instead, they'll say something like," I guess it's good to have options, but I'll never use it." But we all know full well, they're just dying to have it built in the phone like the Note. Pathetic and shameless.

You're completely wrong.

Apple phones now have a stylus? I don't care. I don't want it. I'm not all of a sudden changing my opinion of it. You're ridiculous to assume that. I'll still trash using the pen.

The context is 'who wants to have to use a stylus in order to operate a phone? You've got to get them out, put them away, you lose them - yeurgh. So we designed a phone you can use with your fingers'

An iPhone with Pencil support doesn't detract from Jobs' stance as it is not essential to operate the device.

Yet Apple folks laughed hard when Samsung had their Samsung Galaxy Note, Microsoft had their Surface.

When Apple decided to go with Stylus, suddenly stylus made sense.

I still have my Newton100 and 2000 and they still working just fine.

Yes, it is good things are moving forward, I was pointing out the absurdity of claiming Apple is stealing from Samsung when Apple has had them way longer, I remember seeing a General Magic Pad Demo at an Apple Education Event near JFK before splitting them off and later came out with Newton. And I am not sure Apple was even the first company to really implement a stylus, they were just the first to market it to consumers.

Apple had a stylus back in the 90s.

No idea why you think Samsung or Microsoft have anything to do with it?

This would give Apple a talking point at the keynote, so far the new iPhone X is more or less the same as last years (better specs) there will be a cheaper one with more colour probably and a bigger iPhone X Plus, adding pencil support will give the OLED/premium iPhones that added feature.

The current Apple Pencil is big but they haven’t updated it since it first came out so my guess is they will either redesign the current one, making it smaller and so on OR they introduce a new Apple Pencil for the iPhone.

It makes sense if they are also going to announce new iPad Pro’s because they can then say “the new Apple Pencil works with both the iPad Pro and iPhone X and X Plus”

How come all Apple folks think Apple Pencil is making sense when they laughed at others. "Who need Stylus" was made famous by Apple folks. These folks claimed Stylus was unless with touch screen interface and stylus is thing in the past.

Why Apple folks now stylus on iPhone or iPad is useful now? What happened to their brain?

Ahah you are really fun. Samsung is copying a lot of things and you are saying Apple which innovate every year at least in something, which also run on 100% renewable energy, is pathetic ? Pencil on a smartphone is an exception, it is needed by 0.5% being optimistic.
Pathetic is the content you posted.

This. My first smartphone was a samsung Omnia, when Windows phone was literally a shrunken interface of desktop windows. You NEEDED the stylus to perform basic functions because the interface and touch screen were so finicky. Wanted to close an app? Good luck trying to hit that tiny little "x" at the top right corner w/ the stylus.

Apple Pencil is completely different. I can use iPad Pro and never touch a stylus. It's easy to use. The Pencil provides an excellent writing and drawing experience, while providing convenient navigation when in-use. People who put Apple Pencil and the old smartphone styluses in the same breath have obviously never used both nor understand Steve's premise.

As a former note use and typing on my s9+
( counting down the days to switch back to iPhone in 4-5 weeks) wouldn't we have already have seen some hints in the 12 beta of pencil use? I mean if it's literally just to use in addition to our fingers I dont see the point. You can buy a $3 stylus at the gas station kiosk where they sell cables. I'd love the use of the pencil if it was smaller and 'copied' Samsung. Bring it on.

Apple did not invited the stylus nor was Apple the first one made devices with stylus nor was Apple the first one made stylus to market.

No one really cares. I am excited because if the rumor is true we are going to get 120 hz displays. That’s exciting.

If they offer a stylus I won’t use it. It’s worthless to me. Last time I used a stylus on a phone was with the palm treo.

Doesn’t mean there aren’t any Samsung note users looking to switch.

With premium galaxy sales at an all time low, can’t get much worst for Samsung... well the note 9 can start to explode, but don’t think anyone really cares about the note anymore.

YUK! I still have no desire for an Apple Pencil for my iPhone, for my Ipad Pro, it is neat and useful here and there like when I am marking up live presentations and want to be a few feet away from the screen, or draw silly pictures to send my woman. I do not see how that would work on a phone since it is usually much closer to me, and is just something else to lose.

I have friends who buy note styluses in bulk because they loosen and fall out from time to time, I had enough of that with my HTC Windows CE Phones back in the day.
