This is different how?

OP Probably wouldn't have bothered if others didn't get free replacements for their broken hardware. Atleast he was simply being hopeful, and not as demanding as some of the supernoobs who dropped their iPhones within 1 week of launch and tried to point the blame on everyone else:
"The iPhone is too slippery. It fell out of my hand a shattered!"
"I dropped my phone just a few feet! Why is it so dang fragile!"
"Who the heck designs a phone out of glass?!?"
and my current all time champion:
"Why should I have to pay $200 for Apple's shoddy engineering? I have several nokia prepaid phones that I toss up against the wall on a daily basis and they still work. Why can't Apple do the same? How can it not take daily life?!?!"

A car is obviously a much bigger purchase that is much more expensive to fix, however, I'll give you the fact that you are correct in theory.

BUT, if the car manufacturer was exchanging some of the damaged cars for no cost, wouldn't you take yours to the dealer to see what they could do before dropping the cash to fix?

I don't think anyone expects Apple to replace (I certainly "expected" to pay the $199) but given others recent experiences at the Apple Stores, it is certainly worth the try.

Because Apple is awesome. I actually wasn't going to even try, and was just going to wait to fix my screen. I was in the Apple store buying my wife an iPhone, and the sales rep told me to make an appointment anyway and see if they'd replace it. So I did, and they did.

dude you tried, you failed

just pay $199

It's ok to think that apple will be cool to replace it for free

but I hate people on this forum that feel that they are OWED a free replacement

Im not owed anything, just trying my luck at getting a free one. Ill try one more time and then its 200 out of my pocket.

what kind of dork puts their phone in their shirt pocket..

I do it all the time when I have a front-pocket kind of shirt... the trick is to hold the pocket whenever you lean forward (similar gesture when you pledge allegiance)

Didnt ask as it was wayy to busy in there, im going to try again some other day. Gonna try a couple times before i drop 200

Why?

You dropped it
YOUR FAULT not theirs

Why should they pick up your bill for you dropping it and not having a case on?

Pay it and learn!

Seriously, guys DON'T put it in a shirt pocket. I know it's tempting and handy and all that but, believe me, just don't.
I learned the hard way.

apple has been known as of late to offer a one time replacement for free....op try the manager they are more likely to swap the phone for you at no charge....hopefully it works out for you in the end........

I can tell you from 1st hand experience

one single crack on the screen = free replacement, usually (it's against store regulations but most stores will make exceptions)

multiple cracks = $200 charge

i dont know why its this way but i took my phone to 5 different apple stores and they all told me the exact same thing. ended up forking over $200.

1. Not once did the OP say he was "owed" a free replacement.

2. @Lingham He admits that it was his fault. Let me ask you both this. If you dropped and cracked your iPhone and took it to the store to inquire as to how much it would cost to get fixed, what the process was etc. and the Genius you spoke to said, "we will do a one-time replacement at no cost" would you say???? .... "no, no, no, it's my fault and I will pay the $199."

Of course you wouldn't, you would take the replacement and be grateful to Apple for it.

So, why are you guys giving the OP a hard time for trying to get his replaced one time like many others have?

I had a scratch on the back of my phone and went to get it fixed and accepted the charge. I was about to pay and he said because he didnt have them in stock he would do it free as a GOGW. I will still pay anyways as I accept its my fault and im choosing to.

Under HIS circumstances why should he get it for free. Give me one reason for this?

Nobody is saying he should get it for free. However, Apple obviously has given their stores some wiggle room when it comes to broken screens no matter what the reason. That is not my decision, the OP's decision or your decision - it's Apple's. If you don't like it, take it up with Apple.

I think you are mistaking a nice gesture from Apple as the OP having some sense of entitlement. Technically you are correct, it was his fault (and mine when I dropped it with a case on) but Apple is providing excellent customer service and should be praised for it.

The OP has clearly stated that he may try a couple stores and that he will pay the $199 if need be. Again, I think the only reason he is doing this is based off the experiences of others (including me). I don't think there is anything wrong with this, we are here sharing knowledge and trying to help each other out. Plain and simple.

I've put it in my shirt pocket sometimes when I need both hands or whatever. But not once did I think of bending down, or doing jumping jacks consciously knowing my phone was in my shirt pocket. You just got to be careful.

because it sounds like he's trying to work the system

i could understand wanting to go in there and see if you can get a free replacement ( hell I would encourage that)

its a completely different story where he is now trying to drive around to different locations to see if he can get out of paying $200

But he did post that he would try one more store, so good luck OP

best example i can think of is someone trying to redeem an expired coupon. Sure some stores might take it, but its not store policy so why keep trying at different locations

Never said anything about going to different stores, im going to the same one tomorrow to try again. I already said i am not owed anything from apple, just simply trying my luck thats all. Ill have the cash on hand tomorrow just in case.

It's not about being careful or careless. Things happen that can make you bend down in a matter of "emergency" and in that split second your mind can just shut down to the consciousness that the device is in your shirt pocket.

Jeez people are so self righteous sometimes.

dude, that phone looks a mess and reminded me to hug mine and remind it I love it just as it is!
keep trying for a free replacement, it's hardly the end of the world and if it's at store discretion where some do and some charge how are you the bad guy for retrying?
this is why stores should have a one for all policy, a bit rude to charge you $200 if they did it for free a mile down the road!!

I used my 2g for nearly 3 years without even getting a single scratch on the screen, this was without a case. I can't believe how many people total their phone. I haven't dropped anything valuable since I was a kid. I have seen:

- Phone left on top of a textbook and the person opens the textbook while the phones slides off. Seen this happen more than once.

- People walking and a busy sidewalk while texting with one hand and not paying attention to where they are going. They bump into someone and they drop their phone. Seen this more than once.

- Phone is left on the persons lap and they stand up to get off the train at their stop. Of course the phone falls. Again seen this more than once.

- Seen one guy fall asleep on the train and drop his phone.

- People just randomly dropping their phone.

All three times I've dropped my ip4, it's been in my front shirt pocket. The first time it was to tie my shoe, the second time to pick a pen off the floor, and the third was when I jumped into the air cause I was excited about something.

It's going in my pants pocket from now on.
