I think I have anti-glare on mine (+ anti-scratch & transitions). They don't bother me, but they do get smudgy. My dad brings me these cleaner cloths that are packaged like wet naps. They work well. I also use a microfiber cloth and liquid that costco sells with the glasses.

Whoever said something about plastic lenses not holding up...I got hit in the eye with a baseball and it popped my glasses off my face but they were fine; didn't break or scratch. I was totally shocked. Though, I don't suggest trying it ;) I had a pretty nice black eye from where the frame hit under my eye before flying off my head.

on my old pair of glasses the left lens had some coating coming off on one side ... after 9 years .. using them every day, including sport, army boot camp, and even swimming in the sea

getting thin scratches from cleaning them dry with some shirt (i did that all the time) is one thing but coating coming off ? that isn't normal for new glasses

and what do you mean with the lenses getting greasy ? i don't get that

(for my new glasses i clean them with cold running water and then afterwards with a microfiber cloth dry them up nothing more and only when it's necessary like when they are dirty from putting my hands into them accidently while out in the clubs etc.)

edit: i would check out with the store with your problems ... also what brands are the glasses ? perhaps it's specific to the brand you have in the glasses

My optometrist told me to rinse with water then use alcohol on my anti-glare poly-carb lenses and wipe with microfiber cloth. This is all I do and my glasses are still like new after 3 years.

Possible solution for anti-glare problem

I read several of the posts and recognized the same or similar symptoms as what I had been experiencing. Somewhere I had read about not using hand cleaners with alcohol in them to clean your glasses. That was exactly what I had been doing - and the anti-glare film seem to be deteriorating. I then considered the possibility of soaking my glasses in alcohol to be able to remove the rest of the coating. I soaked them from 30-60 minutes in alcohol and then rinsed with water, followed by drying with a soft piece of cloth (old underwear!) and that did the trick - for me, at least. I have done this on 2 pair so far and it has been successful!:)

I know this is an old thread, but I saw it pop up and I felt I had to respond. (Full disclosure, I work for a company that makes lenses and coatings.)

I think people fail to recognize that there are different types of coatings applied to lenses, and think the option is either yes or no. There are different brands, and each company makes different coatings from low-end to premium. The major players in the market (Essilor, Hoya, and Carl Zeiss, plus some smaller manufacturers) all have marketing folks trying to convince you that theirs is better, but there genuinely are differences between the coatings.

I, of course, would prefer you buy the ones made by the company I work for, but I'm sure your optometrist has plenty of experience with the different coatings and which have worked for him (not necessarily true at a chain like Lenscrafters), and you should do your own research about the coating before you shell out money for it and ask about it by name. I think the optometrist or optician will give you more information if you sound like you know what you're talking about at least a little.

antiglare coating

I know that was really annoying when they scratched so easily.

My first pair of antiglare lenses scratched because I didn't wash them and used tissues at work instead of the cloth, oops. My optometrist replaced them because I wasn't told on how to care for them properly in the first place. I thought they just wanted to up sell. However, now that I know how to look after them I haven't had a problem with them. :D

Sometimes the lab making the lens won't apply the anti-glare of multicoating properly and I have a friend you needed to get it stripped and replaced - but the optometrist did that under warranty so it did not cost her a thing. Perhaps you get get it replaced under warranty too.

And don't leave your glasses in the heat (inside a parked car for instance) it will warp the coating as it is a different thickness to the lens and heats up and cools down at a different rate causing the anitglare to warp.

All my lenses have been plastic for the last several years because they can make the lenses thinner and they haven't scratched any more than the old glass lenses did years ago.

Since it has been resurrected... I have the best and latest Crizal with everything. Glare obviously isn't an issue; I don't know about scratch protection since I take care of my glasses and anyways, I keep then on all the time, so there is little risk of scratching.

The hydrophobic properties of the coating are amazing though. I can just blow on the lenses to get rid of the rain. No need to wipe it off with my shirt. However, they get dirty as easily as my old glasses (with two generation-old Crizal). Don't believe the "dirt-proof" claims.

I thought I was the only one having problems with these glasses, that by the way, cost me an arm and a leg....same problems....can't get them clean, they appear to be scratched and they are the worst investment I have ever made.

I can't tell you how much I had spent additionally to keep these lenses clean.
Special cloths that cost up to 5 bucks, several cleaning solutions...and always, I have to return to soap and water.

I did use something just now called AR Kleen, lens cleaner by Amcon labs, but, I have used that before and it didn't work. This time, I used the solution with one of the 5 dollar cloths and it seemed to do the trick...but, in less than half an hour, I will have to clean them again.....NEVER AGAIN for these lenses....more of a pain then anything else.

glare doesn't bother me as much as perhaps getting scratches on the glasses.

Yeah I do take care of them as best as I can but, I have kids and I play with them and stuff happens, plus I take karate and more often then not my glasses are getting knocked off my face. Not wearing them is not an issue, I'm blind as a bat. I grew up with glass instead of plastic lenses and I miss the durability of the glass but they'd be coke bottles if I used glass lenses.

All anti-glare coatings are NOT created equal and you usually get what you pay for. Crizal is the best, but expensive. I use a coating made by the same company, but not the Crizal label and experience none of these problems. I will never go back to non- anti-glare lenses.

Why are we responding to a 3 year old thread?

Because it is still an issue - or can be - for those of us wearing glassed with anti-glare coating.

I have to say it is a problem for me; my current pair - with specifically made Zeiss vari-focal lenses - beautiful glasses, which I badly needed - also came with this antiglare coating feature. As I had experienced problems before with dirt, grime, smudging (I clean the wretched things daily, as I wear them all the time), I didn't want the anti-glare coating, but had allowed myself to be persuaded to have them by my optician, who said that they had 'improved' and that this should no longer be a problem. Unfortunately, it is.

As the title says, have any of you had an issue with antiglare coatings on your glasses? I got new lenses in my glasses a few months ago, and the sales person at Pearl Vision conned my Mom and I into getting the damn coating.

Over the past few months, I have noticed that after about an hour of wearing the glasses, that a greasy "film" builds up on the glasses. The eyeglass cleaner doesn't even remove the grease, I have to resort to using water, and a few times, I've even had to use iKlear on them, because water didn't even work :)eek:).

Also, I've noticed that these lenses are scratching really easily. I never have had this problem with my other glasses (been wearing glasses since I was 7), and these were the first pair that I've actually kept in the case at night. I'm really ticked about this, because we paid $100 extra for the coating, and they've just been a pain in the @$$.

Does anyone else have an issue with antiglare coatings on their glasses? I'm just curious if I just got a bad set of lenses.

Don

For some reasons some people think I am making up tails or I should be proud of my " excellent choice of glasses" and stop complaining! They are the worst choice of glasses I have ever made! they smug every minute of the day.I constantly have to clean them. Its really time we have a serious discussion about these enhancements and there disadvantages. It does not make sense for me to buy a product touted as been high definition and works wonder and all we get is a product that turns us into forced obsessive compulsive glass cleaners. The two optometrist that I spoke to was matter of fact about my genuine complaint that the constant vaseline like smudge that is difficult to clean off is a pain in the butt and does not enhance my vision except my agitation.

My coating is coming off now. Going to have to make a trip to Costco optical soon. The glasses i have now were from Lenscrafters. Hopefully Costco's is better.

Absolutely. My last 3 pairs were unusable after about a year. Lense Crafters refused to do anything about so I stopped using them. I just bought a pair from Wal-mart but after 4 months they began doing the same thing. I never thought to blame the ant-glare coating.

How do you guys clean your microfibre cloth? Do you put it in the washing machine, or do you hand clean it with soap?

Like you I have an expensive new pair of glasses (bright red :D) and I'm trying to keep the lenses unscratched. It's really annoying as even after cleaning, they still seem smudged, and i think my cloth is probably dirty.

I have some other cloths, but I tried washing them in soap and water, and after I dried them, the texture just wasn't the same as when new.
If you use a washing machine, be sure to clean the inside of the washer, the microfiber will pick up dirt inside the washer.

I clean the micro fibre cloths by hand - in other words, I hand wash them.

Indeed, as with the anti-glare coating (and they do seem to have improved somewhat since the thread started, my most recent Zeiss lenses seem fine), the quality of the micro fibre cloth can also differ dramatically in that some are excellent, while some are pretty poor.

Since someone felt the need to resurrect a 4 year old resurrection of a 3 year old thread...

The last glasses I got went 3 years before I dumped them because the frame was becoming brittle. I got the top of the line (at the time, this was 5 years ago) anti-glare and anti-scratch coating. The problem with typical (cheaper) anti-glare and anti-scratch is that the anti-glare is added AFTER the anti-scratch, so the glare coating scratches. That pair of glasses lasted the 3 years with very minimal scratching.

I now the ultimate in anti-glare and anti-scratch coatings - LASIK, no glasses needed.

The good coatings are baked into the lens, not applied after the fact. I have had anti glare lens and they have never peeled off. I have had my current lenses for about 3 years now and they are scratched but that is expected after that amount of time. The coatings are still fine.

[doublepost=1462218734][/doublepost]I have worn glasses for 57 years and this is the first time my glasses began peeling. I am told it is because of anti-glare coating that was supposed to help my vision. Because I really need glasses, I always purchase a spare pair. Now I have two pair of glasses that are peeling and, consequently effecting my eyesight. The place where they were purchased refuses to take any responsibility and at this time, I am considering filing a lawsuit.

I have actually(now that I think about it) been wearing my current frames for about 5 years. I've used the Crizal brand coating "of the day" for my last few years. At my last eye appointment(which reminds me that I'm long overdue for another by about a year and a half) my prescription changed very little. Crizal coatings come with a two-year no scratch warranty, so at the suggestion of both the opthamologist and their attached optical shop, I just requested a new set of lenses with the same prescription as my previous one and had them replaced.

3 1/2 years later, they're still holding up well with minimal scratching and no separation. I've not done anything exotic, either. I clean them every day, but usually just take them into the bathroom with me when I take a shower and then wipe the fog off them with my clean(cotton) undershirt before I put it on. If I need a mid-day touch up I'll use my undershirt also. Occasionally, I do use a disposable wipe, but that's about it.

Honestly, the last pair of non-AR glasses I had was terrible. My left eye has a very strong prescription, and with plain acrylic lenses had a very pronounced "coke bottle" look. Reflections at night were terrible, to the point where I couldn't drive in the rain at night. Granted, using high refractive index plastic to thin out the lens helps considerably, but I also can't imagine having non-AR glasses. My next pair most certainly will be.

And, this thread has reminding me to pick up the phone and call the eye doctor :)

I got new glasses Friday. The sales person also talked me into getting that purple coating. At first I thought I just had to get used to that purple glare. By Monday I went back to where I got my glasses and told them there was NO way I could live with them! I got a headache, at night when I went to bed and tried to get some rest from my glasses, I still saw fluorescent purple. It seemed there was no getting away from them even after I had taken the glasses off. I felt like my eyeballs had been beaten up and violated. I ended up with nightmares about the world being fluorescent purple. I thought I can't be the only one having a problem with this. I googled about them and as it turns out, I'm not the only one. The salesperson really needs to know more about this product before they sell it to the customers.

Don't ever get the purple one, I can see a person wearing them from a mile away no matter what the marketing says about it being invisible. There is also some debate about the effectiveness of the coating.

I thought I was the only one!! I don't like the purple coating either. It's really distracting and I can see purple spots on them sometimes as well. What terms did you google? b/c I can't find a lot of people with the same issues.

Wow, a year later!

I bought new glasses last summer, but mostly because I was afraid that the nosepiece on my old frames was going to break. I liked those frames well enough that I had the optical shop pull the receipt from my past pair and order the exact same model number of frames. Aside from really liking them, considering that I put my glasses on pretty much before I get out of bed and take them off right before going to sleep(with the only significant time off generally being when I'm in the shower) I figured that I got my mileage out of the old ones after 5 1/2 years.

Once again, I have the current Crizal coating. I otherwise don't have anything fancy-just polycarb lenses with Crizal-no tint or transition, etc. I generally wipe them in the morning with a clean white t-shirt(before I put it on) and then might touch them up a few times through the day with the same. They might get cleaned with a Zeiss branded disposable wet wipe once every couple of weeks, but that's about it. I see a few scratches, but nothing detrimental.

For the most part I only think about them when I don't have them on :)
