People here like to say that an antivirus program isn't necessary on Macs; if you want to have one just for peace of mind, try ClamXav. It's a free, lightweight app that won't interfere with your computer operations.

Yup, I use ClamXav, and am a relatively new Mac user. I know I probably won't and will scarcely run into a virus for the Mac, but considered I was raised in a PC, virus-freak family (and I've done quite well protecting my PC) its hard not to at least have an anti-virus software on my Mac. But I'm also considering uninstalling it.

EDIT: not because ClamXav is bad that I may uninstall it but because it won't be needed.

ClamXAV can't detect OS X threats.

True, it is the most annoying anti-virus I ever had the displeasure of using back in the old PC days, I am sure if there is a Mac version of it...it is just as bad I imagine.

I remember putting it on my mac mini back in 2005 when i was a mac noob, lets just say the computer was slow all the time, kept locking up. I took it off and it ran nicely

I never have - and never will. Every now and then an article appears about security on the Mac. They never get it right and intermingle the words virus, trojan etc - like they are the same thing. The stories invariably start from a security company... to sell their products. Don't get sucked in.

I have used ClamXav for over a year, and it has never detected any kind of virus on my computer...this is a good thing, but still I sometimes wonder if it's because there are no viruses/spyware, etc. or because ClamXav doesn't detect anything. I have also tried the Intego 30 day trial, but ended up deleting it from my computer before the week was over because...well, to be honest..maybe it was just me, but it looked like a program that was designed by a first grader. :p I also didn't like being warned every time I wanted to go online or do anything related to internet. :D

OSX/Leap-A
OSX/Oompa-A
Virus.OSX.Macarena

To name a few

Did you actually read about those "viruses", or are you just reposting a list you saw elsewhere?

I ask because that's not exactly the best argument you could make for the tired old "nuh uh, Mac OS X *does* have viruses" claim.

I use Intego's Virusbarrier X5.

coming from a windows background it just seemed weird not having some protection.

Id recommend it, it has run on my machine flawlessly and I dont notice any slowdown.

I also tried clamxav and still run it from time to time.

So you paid money for an app just because you were used to using a less secure software stack?

I really should start producing Mac AV software. It'd be a cinch to write, and I'd make a bundle...

sorry i was wondering what the verdict on this was

thanks in advance

If you're running XP through Parallels/VMware/VirtualBox you're still running Windows -- thus all the usual rules apply to keeping your Windows installation secure.

Nope, just not willing to bury my head in the sand and say there will never be a virus for the mac.
