Where I live T-Mobile has spotty coverage, for both voice and data, depending what area of the city you're in. My work takes me further out in the suburbs where coverage is even worse -- there Verizon is best, it's what the locals use. Even my AT&T coverage, while better than T-Mobile, fades in and out. I can turn my iPhone's data-roaming on and not think about hitting a data-roaming allotment. If someone has consistent T-Mobile coverage where they live & work, and rarely stray -- then it wouldn't be a consideration. You questioned the validity of T-Mobile having a data-roaming allotment, I provided confirmation that they do... so... you were wrong

This topic is about why or why not someone might consider relinquishing their grandfathered unlimited AT&T data plan, it's not a debate -- just providing a viewpoint as to why they might want to keep it instead of switching to T-Mobile, I don't really care what their eventual choice might be. If it differs from your opinion, that doesn't make it wrong. Regardless, I'm paying $180 per year less than T-Mobile's comparable unlimited plan, and, I don't need to concern myself with carrier data roaming allotments -- not sure why anyone would consider that a bad thing, but, whatever... o_O

My mistake, I thought you were talking about international roaming.
Your situation with domestic data roaming and coverage issues in the suburbs is more unique. I agree that individual location and results will vary.
You gotta stick with what works best for ya, cant blame you on that.

I heard FAN doesn't discount data plan only talk plan.
Mine does... I think it depends on your negotiated discount

Fan discounts will discount the old $30 unlimited, $50 5 gig, and some of the grandfathered $25 2 gig plans and $30 3 gig plans. It does not cover the old $15/$20 200/300mb packages, nor the $30 3 gig package.

Confuse. U say fan does cover $30 3 gig package? Than say fan doesn't cover $30/3gig plan.

Which is which?

Some people have their $30 package discounted, I don't know any rhyme or reason as to why.

$5 more to stay on unlimited or $250 more a month to switch to a mobile share plan. I think I'm going to stay with unlimited. I've never had an AT&T rep try to get me to switch, they've always told me to keep the unlimited data.

I have a FAN plan and currently pay $68 per month with unlimited data and 450 rollover which I'm at the max rollover. I will stay with this plan and pay the extra $5 per month.

This plan has always included the subsidy for the purchase of the phone. This past year I purchased my new 6S Plus outright to replace the 6 Plus. And then I sold my 6 Plus outright as well. Going forward I have a family that will buy all my trade ins for top dollar so that will be my plan.

But is there a way to get my plan price lower without a new subsidized phone? It's interesting because my husband is on a similar plan and always keeps his phones longer than the 2 year contract but his monthly plan fee never goes down.

I have been testing tmobile for the past 5 days. Yes, ATT has had a bit better signal while driving through rural areas of Florida. From Orlando, I took US 17, to Punta Gorda. Tmobile lost signal twice for a minute or so, then had edge, back to 4g, then LTE. ATT stayed on LTE or 4G. Driving from Punta Gorda to Fort Lauderdale, both had signal the entire time. Overall I have had faster speeds with Tmobile. In downtown Winter Garden FL, ATT was less than 1mbps, while Tmobile was over 70. It is going to be tough giving up my ATT Unlimited, though I am somewhat leaning toward it as it is better in the city area. $61 currently with ATT soon to be $66 with price increase. $45 with Tmobile. Hmm...

No, if you're on the old with 2 year contract and 450 rollover you don't get a cheaper bill by not updating your phone. You just continue to pay the same monthly fee every month.
That's why its a good idea to take advantage of the upgrade as soon as its available.
Even if you don't want the new phone you can buy it for $199 for example and sell it for around $600.

Yep, this is good to know. So when I'm due for an upgrade in the fall of 2016, I'll definitely take advantage of it for the $199 like you said.

Thanks!

So Ur att bill (with subsidy is $61?). Or without subsidy?

T-Mobile bill is $45 without subsidy?

Also don't fool urself with LTE speeds outside. The best indicator inside buildings. Unless work/school is outside. Test LTE at home and inside ur work place. Places u are at 80-90% of the time.

Winter garden is one of the new 'outer suburbs" of orlando. Still growing like crazy.

Tested inside today at the Amway center. T-Mobile worked, att did not. At my job, both are about the same speeds. At the gym, T-Mobile is much faster than att, although the gym does have wifi.

The $61 is with subsidy. The $45 for T-Mobile is without of course.

How does your situation figure to be $250 more with mobile share?

i decided to chime in instead of just reading like usual, but i left from sprint sero to tmobile i had there retention plan 30 dollars for talk and text and 20 for unlimited data which put me at about 50 a month 58 after taxes. i will not bash tmobile it was good data fast and i live in fort lauderdale florida about 10 min from Miami , and 20 min from boca . tmobile data was awesome , combined with wifi calling it was good. the only reason i left tmobile was because i got a steal on a att unlimited data . with att i now pay 70 a month before 22 percent discount. so after discount and tax about 68 dollars. so for me i ended up paying $10 a month for a much better network , let be honest we know att it better than tmobile overall, and im doing my testing based on the entire united states rural included. so now that unlimited data is going up by 5 dollar the difference now is $15 from what i was paying with tmobile to me is still not a killer since i have a peace of mind knowing 9/10 i will have service without wifi calling. with att im constantly on 3-4 bars with tmobile i was always on 1-2.

so note to anyone if u have the att unlimited data and it working for u just fine, keep it. truth be told i had faster speed on tmobile than att i swear my tmobile speed test were like 60-80mbps with att i get 9-30mbps. but overall im paying for reliability and stability and a peace of mind knowing 9/10 u will have service. and trust me thats worth the extra 10 a month

According to the website it is $300 for the 40GB plan, then add $40 for my iPhone then $15 for my parents dumb phone, which comes to $355. My current bill is about $92 so add $5 which comes to $97. 355-97=$258

I was a little off I was thinking my bill before the increase was about $98 until I looked it up and it turned out to be $92

I used 31GB last month, highest I've used was 37GB. My usage might drop some due to now keeping wifi on at home for wifi calling since I get a low signal at home.

I don't think the price hike applies to the unlimited iPad data plans from what I could conclude after reading the press release, but if it does you can bet I'll be keeping it regardless.

Hello,
Since most of u guys have unlimited here, i thought this would be a good place to ask. I have unlimited and my last two upgrades I bought the iphones from aapl and then activated on itunes and always kept unlimited. I hear that in the future this isnt possible and i want to buy a subsidized phone otherwise the built in amortization in my current rate wouldnt make financial sense. Then people said u have to goto an att owned store and not a franchise, etc. is there a consensus method to upgrade now, get a subsidized ATT phone, with a 2 year contract, and keep unlimited? I prefer ordering online if possible bc the commisioned salespeople in the ATT stores r hard to trust imho

Thank you in advance for any responses.

Switched to T-Mobile, when the 6s came out. I probably save $40mo, and I can now use my wireless hotspot (don't know how I survived without that?).

Biggest thing is that T-Mobile actually seems to appreciate me, as an unlimited customer. AT&T always treated me like a crook.

After 20 or so years of being treated badly, felt goof to leave.... So good.

I am not switching to T Mobile, not at this time anyway. The "unlimited" T mobile plan i saw wasnt really unlimited. It was like 1gb at 4g speeds then after 1g was used they throttled u to a 2g or 3g speed. Despite everything, i am happy w att and their unlimited. Just looking at what the current best practice is in relation to my question above and Att. Thanks though.

people gonna change or stay when the price hike comes in Feb?
I just gave it up last week. Looked at the data usage, and I use about 10gb/month (I have thought that I used over 30, but I was wrong), and now the family is on the 15GB plan with rollover. Saved about $40/month doing this, and there was no switch-out fee (they carried the "no charge for cancelling" penalty forward.) In the process, I got BOGO iPhone deal for Mrs. thequik and my daughter, and I just found out that my son, who was an authorized user on the account got himself an iPhone too.

So, all told, the bill went up about $40, but with the deals, it's going down $40 (the kids are kicking in $42/ea, plus the BOGO deal will take off another $23). The rollover data is what did it for me.

That, and Mrs. thequik does tend to keep her phones longer than 2 years. I wait at the Apple Store on release day to get mine, so having the bill drop by $30 when hers is paid off is a good thing. It was a discussion in the house that we're paying for the subsidy after we're not using it anymore was a real one to me, and a philosophical one to her.

You alone used 10gb last month and went with a 15gb share plan for all 4 of you?
Get ready to start paying data overages soon.
And will have to pay in full or make monthly payments on all devices you get in the future.
What you think you saved doesn't include $450 of subsidies you were getting for each line or the peace of mind of unlimited data.

.. I live in Mass on the tax free NH border, so naturally I'd rather not pay the tax. I've always bought from the NH Apple Store.
So when the 6s came out I started running around to the NH att stores. What I was pissed at though is that the store told me to come on in, only to try and sell me NEXT!

Come to find out, YUP.... I can only buy online if I want to keep my 2 year contract.
So I bought online and had the phone in just a few days..

I'd like to keep my subsidy thank you very much
