16gb/wifi only/black

Admittedly I'm still in the "reality distortion field" with the ipad. First big purchase in quite a while and I purposely held back on getting first one. Still trying to find digital equivalents for pen and pencil stuff (last big one is a task manager that works I used a day planner, see here for relevant forum topic). I'll be taking it with me to work and see how much I use it for notes and outlines and such. Stylus won't be in till later in the week.

It hasn't left the safety of the house yet so I'm not sure if the lack of 3g will bother me. I just didn't seem to use it enough to warrant the $130 price tag plus $15/250mb on whatever months I decided to use it. May jailbreak my iphone again so I can tether off that the couple times a year where I need 3g and just using my phone wouldn't work. The 16gb size doesn't bother me since all my music will still be on iphone and probably won't watch many movies on it.

TL;DR: Possibly some remorse on not getting 3g, too early to tell.

I actually am trying a Xoom now. Trying it for 45 days and then deciding between iPad2, or Xoom. Sold iPad1 already. Xoom just got flash on Friday. I do like the customization of the Xoom and the fast browser. Typing seems fine, but only time will tell if I keep it.

A little at first but now that i have customized it more for what I will be using it for that feeling is going away :)

Or, if it's a long car ride, I'll use my SlingPlayer and throw Sprout on there.

For fine-tuning motor skills , I'd rather have my niece navigate through the pages and shows herself.

When I was a kid, I loved long car rides, seeing the landscape or cityscape move by. I loved getting the window seat in an airplane, looking at the larger geography and seeing how it looked like the smaller features but in larger scale.

Now when you fly, they ask you to draw the shades down so that people can stare at some stupid screen that draws people's attention away from reality. I tell them no, put on some music and just watch the world turn.

In January, I finished a very famous 4 year-long journalism project. And one of the most remarkable and troubling things that I saw change over the course of those years was the loss of eye contact with people as more and more of them stared down at devices and in one case on Wall Street, ran into each other.

But it really hit home what we as a species on this planet are losing when I saw kids who did not want to play with one another because they were "gaming"....absolutely disgusting.

I use these devices as tools and that is it. So the faster they are, the better for I really want to spend as little time on them as possible so I can be a part of real and tactile world. But when I have children, they sure as heck won't be spending very much time on them at first because we have come a long way in this world in terms of motor skills without staring at a device for hours on end as a child...

I applaud your efforts and very much appreciate your candor. I would love to read your piece, if you have a link or .pdf files you can dropbox for MacRumors members to read.

However, I think you are making a few assumptions about first, my niece and second, about this generation. For a one and a half year old, my niece is learning to recognize images, sound recognition and other cognitive skills with a variety of tools. It's amazing how she is able to pick up on things so quickly. It not only builds her communication skills but also promotes learning within other areas. Now, if we were to just toss the iPad at her and say "have at it"--that would be a travesty. However, family members are constantly interacting with her while viewing these shows, pointing out words, shapes--you know, the basics. Either that, or she's listening to music in the car and gauging a sense of rhythm and time. Storybooks are constantly read to her on a nightly basis. Other days she's running around the yard, exploring nature, just like we did during the 90s (my generation) and what sounds to be like your generation as well. I do support variation and interaction during child rearing rather than plopping them in front of the television.

I think the "kids" you are talking about are tweens and teenagers who are too absorbed in their social media lives and textual lives to embrace the outside world. Same goes for adults too. It promotes a sense of security. If someone refuses to make eye contact, they can't draw the attention of a potential attacker or violator. It's a society of (fear, consumerism, capitalism) or whatever private school liberal arts argument you want to use.

Nintendo DS, PSPs, Blackberrys, iPhones, iPads, Xooms, whatever the device may be is part of escapist society. People can create their own little bubble by absorbing themselves in a world unlike their own. Usage of devices on public transportation does decrease social interaction, but people have a choice to put said device away. The fact that they don't, has deeper implications than "technology."

Technology has served the populous very well--and I'm sure you don't dispute that fact. The pathways it has opened up for individuals with disabilities is remarkable. I don't think you're trying to make the technology is the root of all evil argument--so please don't interpret it as that but perhaps that it makes us anti-social. Sure. But I think there are more paramount issues at stake than technology in the adult world for the anti-social/lack of eye contact. And of course that trend is going to trickle down to teenagers and tweens.

I apologize for continuing to make this thread off topic.

Only for the "stupid cover" in leather. $69 for a piece of crap. It'll be going back to the so-called genus that reccomended it.

Very honest of you. Astute observations on your part. I am by no means old, but I like to think I've learned a thing or two (26 years old). I won't derail the purpose of this thread too much, but I believe that new devices and communication platforms are increasing the ability of humans to communicate on a global scale. For instance, I can use gmail to send an email to colleagues and friends all over the world, Facebook to communicate with distant relatives, Twitter to interact with others in my profession and celebrity figures I admire, these types of forums to interact with people who share similar interests and passions, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

I do agree that physical human contact is negatively affected by these new digital mediums (and the long-term affects of this are yet-to-be realized), but I like to think that it's not going away, it's just that there are new ways to interact with each other than ever before and we are all still learning to adjust. At one point there wasn't such a thing as a telephone, now we have little devices that we can use to call pretty much anyone.

Most younger people "gaming" generally are engaging in multi-player gaming with players from all over the world and are forming solid relationships through those technologies. I've seen it, I've participated in them and it's a very interesting feeling. Some of these relationships transcend the digital world and actually do result in physical contact. For example, I first met my wife on MySpace. Had that not existed, I probably wouldn't have met her, and she has been the best thing to ever happen to me.

Oh, and I second the notion that I would like to read your article.

To me, this one feels more like a power computer. You can do more with it thanks to the speed.

Mine coming to $910 and being the white I dislike, make me have some remorse though.

do more thanks to speed? did the ipad 1 lag at all.....dont think so...

This

I'm giving away my iPad to a friend when my iPad 2 arrives, and it's not the camera I'm after. Thinner. Lighter. More than double the CPU horsepower. More than four times the GPU horsepower. Double the memory. Automatic wake and sleep with the smart cover. Video out that works with every application, not just those designed for it.

Not everyone will feel that it's worth upgrading, but I certainly do. You're welcome to your own opinion but to claim "there really isn't that much of a difference" is mind-bogglingly inaccurate.

Zero man, it is a big improvement on browsing too. No checkerboards waiting for parts of pages to load.

It is going to be huge.

I don't know about you, but I see the checkerboard all the time.. Even the PAGES when I scroll down to fast, I was hope-ing that this would go away, but no, it's still there. The speed increase for now playing with both at the same time, is next to none... The iPad 2 is faster, but by a split second...

I'm not sure yet actually. I ordered the white online and it hasn't come yet but I did visit an Apple store and saw one there and I didn't like it! :(
I am hoping that maybe the store's fluorescent lighting might have made it look different but it looked more of a creamy white and not a nice ice white which I think goes better with the default color of most backgrounds. Plus I watch a lot of movies so still waiting to see if that is going to be a problem or not. Also, I am concerned about the speaker grill facing mostly to the back. That doesn't make sense to me. I know I can use headphones of course but that is not always the case. I returned a Nook Color because of that. So anyway, still waiting to get mine to see if those two features are a problem or not.

Maybe you should get a bb playbook and be done with it. It seems every one of your posts is how the xoom or the iPad isnt good enough. And i never get the checkerboard unless I try to scroll down before the page is fully loaded. The browser can't be faster than your internet connection.

Only regret I have is that I didnt walk away with the ones we really wanted. We both wanted 3G, but none to be had around here. Ended up with wifi only's. Otherwise quite impressed and enjoying them.

Lots of remorse here. Bringing mine back tomorrow... I Just don't see myself using it enough and no flash kills it for me. I may try a xoom. Plus, typIng is hard as piss on that thing.

Aahhhhahahahah...yeah try a Xoom.

The new iPad is incredibly thin and light and much faster. No I don't regret it.

I agree with you 100%. Felt the same way with the xoom. I was purchasing an item and that damn browser quit on me. Facebook also caused a force close most of the time.

I have been to two stores with the xoom and neither had a machine to demo. What is with that?

My Android phone, which I love when it works, is a PITA when it doesn't. Less than a year later and I have to tape the battery cover on, though it isn't broken, it has just worn down from daily battery pulls. It is a Motorola, so I have to question the construction on the xoom as well.

Dude, really..... I like the iPad 1 love it! Still have it!

iPad 2 I better, but not by much, so yeah, IT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!!
Xoom, I don't know since I don't owne or, but from playing with it, I like it... I like it a lot.. And if I buy one, it matter, I have my iPad as well ;)

And I guess my 16gb wifi is iPad2 is slower than yours ;)

Great reviews but no regrets of not upgrading. The threads did make me get off my butt and upgrade to 4.3 which I am quite happy with.

iPad 2 is a great device and those that have or will get one will be very pleased. But nothing wrong with the original right now.
