People always say "Old skool hip-hop was better." Why? Most of it was crap, and that's no more or less true today. It has been about gangsta violence and money since the late 1980s, so does that mean all hip-hop since the late 80s is crap? Perhaps current styles and sounds don't suit everyone's taste, but that's it.

De la Soul was more bad than good.
Tribe? Same thing.
Def Jux label was ok.
Ninja Tunes label? They were good, but only if you're not expecting any rapping.
Grand Master Flash had some decent tunes, but I doubt you guys sit around thinking how great the lyrics or beat was. I couldn't sit and listen to any of their albums today, or enjoy more than a few songs.
Slick Rick? Couldn't stand any of his albums. He had some decent songs though.

Personally, I think the best rap album of 2010 has been Kanye's album. His, The Roots, and Rick Ross, but for different reasons. I have never thought Kanye was good --- production or lyrics. His new album is a masterpiece though.

Rick Ross is so extreme and full of ego that it's funny, and actually good. You're not really supposed to take the pyrics at face value. He's playing a role. It reminds me of Slim Thug's 'Already Platinum' from 4 years ago, which was good, or even some of Missy's albums.

The Roots are The Roots.

Atmosphere drops posse cut - "Minnesota Nice"
atmosphere-mn-alldates.jpg

What better way to celebrate Atmosphere's "Welcome To Minnesota Tour" than with a deep posse cut of all the rappers performing on the tour? "Minnesota Nice" features Slug, Prof (Stophouse), Mr. Gene Poole & Felipe Cuauhtli (Los Nativos). You can download the track free from Rhymesayers.com/Radio make sure you share it with your friends!

Hell yeah.

On that note, G-Funk was conceived in the mind of Cold 187um from Above the Law. Contrary to the popular belief that Dre was the first. I couldn't believe when I read that on Wikipedia. It's great that it's acknowledged.

My favorite of his produced albums are Above the Law - Legends and Kokane - Funk Upon a Rhyme. Some of the best sounding music eva.

+1. Nothing's better than G-Funk :)

The Roots Picnic at the Festival Pier in Philly on June 4th...

I should say, I obtained a ticket to this event...pretty stoked.

Anybody here like Jay Rock? Most of my Hip-hop/Rap section on my itunes consists of Jay Rock, Wiz Khalifa, and Lil Wayne. As you have noticed I haven't expanded my library past 2000. I plan on doing that someday when I have more time.

Got tickets to see Cube in my hometown in July. Not a fan of any album he released since 1993 but he used to be my favourite rapper along with Chuck D. Still wouldn't pass up this chance to see him even after his recent movies :D

Just got home from the 4th Annual Soundset Festival, it was a great show as always. Some of the artists that performed this year: Atmosphere, Big Boi of Outkast, De La Soul, Brother Ali, Doomtree, and Slaughterhouse.

Soundset is an all day festival focusing on the various aspects of hip hop: MC'ing, DJ'ing, Breakdancing, Graffiti writing, Skateboarding and even a low rider car show.

Here are a few shots I snapped this afternoon:

Another shout out to Kid Cudi.

And "partyboy" I don't think your avatar with the faux hawk and your posts on the "recent purchase" picture thread are really helping your cause here...

ya cudis pretty dope but you can't really classify most of his music as rap. my favorite song by him is either the prayer or embrace the martian. by the way ihiphopmusic.com is a great site for new unreleased hip hop.

Big hip hop fan here. I listen mainly to mainstream stuff, but I do try get a little bit of everything. I mostly listen to Lil Wayne (I know lots of people hate him, but I enjoy his music, that's all I care about), Game, Mac Miller, Common, J Cole, Eminem, and Biggie.

Don't really have much to add to the thread, just sharing :)

Public Enemy killed it! Fear of a Black Planet is one of my all time favourite albums and hearing it all live last night was awesome! Good to see Flav back doing what he does best and leaving reality TV others :p

My ex loved Lil Wayne so i know most of his work. I like the A Milli track. I have a version of it with MF DOOM freestyling over it :)

Anyone know of some good female hip hop artists?

Also what hip hop you like better the new hip hop or old hip hop.

I usually stick with early to mid-90s hip-hop, those were the best years imo.
