Twin Cities Dan speaks the truth. I can verify that the new Brother Ali is real good.

Also stumbled on this dude out of NYC a while back. Blitz the Ambassador. He dropped an album called "Stereotype".

I highly recommend it. It's right up there w/ POS "Never Better" as best hip hop album I've heard this year.

I'm hoping I can add Felt 3 to that list come November.

I wouldnt say im a fan since i love all kinds of music, but im a huge fan of Snoop Dogg and Tupac (rip), also Three 6 Mafia rocks my socks, or should i say raps. ;)

Haha glad to see so many good acts listed here and not just '50 cent' garbage!! I have a wide range of artists too and got to see Public Enemy live when they came to the UK.
As for my favourites its not easy to choose. Favourite group would be Public Enemy without a doubt though! I still cant listen to Welcome to the Terrordome without feeling the anger of Chuck D's lyrics. Favourite solo artist is also hard. Back in the day i would have said Ice Cube. His first few albums are amongst the best ever made in my opinion. His new stuff is way below what he used to be capable of though.
Love Ras Kass and Redman seems to release album after album and has never lost his funky rhyme delivery. Now if your talking about straight up lyricists than Canibus would have to be near the top for me. Sometimes when i listen to his freestyles and rhymes i laugh because its so good i cant cope!!
Chino XL has some wicked lines too. And who could forget mighty Immortal Technique who i would probably place in the top 5 lyricists along with Canibus, Big L and Killah Priest :D

Im going to keep this thread going :) We can update it with upcoming artists and classics like the OP said. I recommend Black Milk. Hes an excellent producer/rapper and of course Slum Village. These guys along with The Roots are always expanding what hip hop can be

One of my more recent finds is Army of the Pharaohs its a little more intense but none the less they are great, they used to be known as Jedi Mind Tricks.

Others that I like to listen to,

Asher Roth
KiD CuDi
Kanye West
Eminem
KRS One
Public Enemy
Dr. Dre
Lil Wayne
Jay-Z (The Blue Print 3 is AMAZING, I still listen to it, and I had it 2 months before release).
CunninLynguists

I like hip-hop, but I hardly ever actually concentrate on the lyrics, I just like the sound of the music.

Good hip hop is about the emcee and what they have to say. The backing track is just a tool to help them deliver their message. Thats how it used to be. Nowadays mainstream hip hop is like pop music. People like it because it has a club beat. Thankfully theres lots of fantastic artists who shun the mainstream ;)

Yea i love Jedi Mind Tricks, got the Army Of Pharaohs album but not played it yet. Apathy is great too, has some great albums out and i recommend listening to Hell Razah, particularly his Renaissance Child album.

ACTUALLY hip-hop started as a DJ act with the emcee as the hype man. DJs would mix and match beats together while the emcee's got the crowd involved. it wasn't until Melle Mel and people like Afrika Bambaataa that emcees became the main attraction.

Yes thats how it started but it was still in its infancy at this point. Im talking about once it started taking off with Run-DMC and so on. People used to care about what they had to say as much as loving the beat. The lyrics in The Message go to prove this and its just as relevant today as it was back in the day

truth truth. a lot of it has to deal with the majority of people who listen to the music are retarded and probably respond highly to bells and whistles.

Killah Priest got a new album out. Not heard it yet but heres the link for all interested Killah Priest - Elizabeth

Lol never heard of that one. What the hell is going on with this dude? I bought the offering and loved it to death (really, really, really great album) and then not too long after came Behind The Stained Glass and then a few months after came I Killed The Devil Last Night. I'm guessing this joint came in between those two? He should chill, I'm losing interest cause he dropping to much stuff too quickly.

ANYWAY, for ANYONE who loves and supports REAL new york hiphop buy the new CORMEGA album Born And Raised. It's amazing for real. Dopest album in a long time by far. I was disappointed at first due to me having anticipated it for 7 years, but now I cant turn it off. 40 listens and it came out Oct. 20th. Check it out and buy it. If anyone deserves sales it's this guy, always stayin true to the fans and what we want. Perfect lyrics. Producer lineup? Premier, Large Professor, Pete Rock, Ayatollah, Easy Moe Bee, Havoc, Nottz among others. This is HOW ITS SUPPOSED TO BE DONE, I guarantee it!

might be slightly old now, but Mos Def's The Eclactic is still being rinsed on my speakers!

can't get enough of it!

even raekwons cuban linx 2 isn't that bad :)

and also the J Dilla!! gotta love that guy RIP!!

I recently bought Ill Pill Productions - Time Slips Away and can't stop playing it all the way through.

The new Blue Scholars EP OOF! is pretty good to, it has some Hawaiian themes to it.

Sabzi (DJ for Blue Scholars and Common Market) recently put out a Jawaiian mixtape as well under the name Sabzi Selectah that I keep playing over and over.
