19 replies and only one flame - that's pretty good; I expected more. As for you, you completely misunderstood my post. I AM wowed by the new iPad. The only thing it lacks that I expected is 128 GB of RAM on the high-end model, and I understand that's because flash-RAM prices haven't dropped as quickly as they had in the past. I'm guessing you're a young guy. When I was a single guy in my 20s and 30s, with a good job, a cheap apartment, and no responsibilities, I thought nothing of dropping two grand (or more) on a new computer, synthesizer, or guitar. Now I'm a middle-aged guy making a lot more money, but with a wife, step kids, pets, a mortgage, and a retirement to fund. If I added up all the money I spent on cool gadgets I liked but didn't need, and if I'd invested it instead (particularly in Apple stock), I probably could retire now. My point is that $700 or $500, while I can afford it, is no longer an impulse purchase for me. I think a lot of people look at the new iPad, want it (as do I), justify it by convincing themselves that the previous model is "unusable," and buy the new one. If they can afford it and don't need to be spending that money elsewhere, good for them. I can't justify it just yet, because my iPad 1 is still usable, and I was wondering how many other people have come to the same conclusion.

Lol what in the world will you do with 128GB of RAM?! You must need like a terabyte of hard drive in your iPad then hahah
All jokes aside, I upgraded from my iPad 1 to the new iPad and I love it! My original still works great, but i really wanted the new one since I use my iPad so extensively for school. So I suppose I'm happy and I upgraded to the iPad 3. It was worth it to me though, and that's what matters. :D

I upgraded from the first iPad, but I was more than ready to upgrade. Constant crashing while using Netflix or news reader apps was too annoying for me, and honestly once I got the new iPad I felt like throwing my first iPad in the trash (not really, but I knew I never wanted to go back). Besides the big difference in the screen, the new iPad feels snappier and I haven't had any issues with apps crashing except NCAA March Madness which I suspect is due to the app itself. I think the new iPad looks so much sleeker than the original, and I'm hoping the next iPhone that comes out adopts a design like the iPad 2/new iPad.

I upgraded from the ipad1 to the ipad3.

I was unhappy with the performance of the ipad1 with ios5, but I still used it anyway.

But now that I have used the ipad3, it is painful to go back to the ipad1 to use something as basic as safari. Too slow.

Same experience here.

I guess if you don't know what you're missing the original iPad is still a great tablet.

That's what I'm afraid of, and why I've resisted checking out the new iPad in person. As soon as I saw the iPhone 4, my iPhone 3G was no longer good enough for me.

Also I got them matching snuggies.

You are a good son (or daughter). :)

Well, that's part of my point: I don't need 128 GB of RAM, but neither do I need a new iPad. I don't need my current iPad 1, either, but I sure do love it. Actually, with iCloud, that much storage isn't so important anymore. My initial reason was to fit my entire 70 GB iTunes collection on my iPad, along with my photo collection, some videos, apps, magazines, etc. iCloud iTunes works pretty well, but it's often slower than having my songs right on the iPad (and maybe the slowness comes from having an iPad 1, rather than being in iCloud), so I'd pay for the convenience of having my entire music collection on my iPad. I've also found that multimedia e-magazines take up a lot of space, and many can't be saved on your computer or backed up in iCloud. Before iCloud, I deleted a lot of e-magazines from my iPad because I was almost out of space. When iCloud came, I deleted my iTunes library from my iPad, and went back to re-download some of the e-magazines I'd deleted, only to find they were no longer available. (They were free, so I can't complain.) So 64 GB is more than enough for me now, but with hi-res files reportedly being 2 to 5 times the size of standard-res files, I wanted to wait and see how much space is "enough" for people who download a lot of stuff, like I do.

In all honesty, I'll probably break down and buy the new iPad, since I use my iPad 1 more than I do my Mac.

if i see one more thread about people trying to justify keeping am outdated tablet due to lack of 'wow' of new iPad i'm gonna flip. if you keep waiting to be wowed then you are doing it wrong. the new iPad display is magnificent. end of story...

Not everyone has the cash to upgrade every year so have some respect!

I preordered the new iPad and received it on Friday like many others, I can appreciate the better screen and snappier performance but I still plan on returning it this evening.

I have had my original iPad 32GB w/ unlimited 3G since the day they were launched, I use it for so many things and hardly ever leave home with out it but I just can't see where my user experience will be greatly enhanced by any thing that the new iPad has to offer. I have FaceTime on my iPhone and two Mac computers that I seldom use, I don't suffer from eye strain, or slow 3G connections in my area - I'm still a happy camper :)

My 8yr old son is bit disappointed about the new iPad return because I had promised to give him my original iPad but I have decided that I can't justify spending $765 to replace my perfectly good iPad - I'll just order him a refurbished 16GB iPad2 for $350 and save the rest of that money for something else we may want more than we need.

i can see you took offense by bringing 'age' into this. not gonna bother typing a response. but enjoy your 1st gen, sir.

I brought it up because people's perspectives change with age. You misunderstood my original post (nowhere did I say I wasn't wowed by the new iPad, just that I couldn't justify purchasing it), blew off what I had to say, and ended with "end of story," effectively dismissing any viewpoint other than your own. When I was twentysomething, I'm sure I was guilty of similar things. I didn't understand how people could come to conclusions other than my own. Age (i.e., experience) has taught me otherwise. I don't think that you (or anyone else) is foolish for upgrading to the new iPad, unless it's with money you really can't afford to spend. And that was the crux of my thread: sure, the iPad 3 is indeed magnificent, but is my iPad 1 truly unusable, and can I justify spending money on a new iPad, as opposed to spending that money on something else?

I have had ipad 1 for years. It is great but once you use an A5 based iPad there's no going back...

I'll put it this way. I paid for the iPad 3rd gen 64 LTE as a replacement for the perfectly serviceable iPad 1st gen 64 3G.

The catch is I was GIVEN the first one. I am happy to PAY for the upgrade. And so far it has been worth every penny.

There have been threads from people who have the iPad 2 and are skipping the 3, and from people who have the 1 or 2 and are buying the 3, but is anyone happy enough with their 1 that they plan to wait for the 4? I skipped the 1 when it was released, as the iPad didn't interest me, but enough people convinced me of its awesomeness that I decided to get the 2. It was out of stock everywhere, and when AT&T dumped their stock of iPad 1's at low prices, I decided to buy a 64 GB 3G model for $529 rather than wait for the 2's to become readily available. I vowed that, if I liked the 1, I'd upgrade to the 3 if it had a Retina display. Well, I've absolutely loved my 1, and I use it every day. I'm glad I sprang for the 64 GB model, as I download a lot of content. I haven't used the 3G feature, though. iOS 5 was causing my 1 to crash a lot, but 5.1 has pretty much fixed that. Some apps are running more slowly, but it's far from unbearable. Overall, for what I use it for, my 1 is functioning as well as the day I bought it a year ago. So, as much as I'd love to have a 3, I can't justify spending $699 for a 64 GB model, and I'm worried that a 16 or 32 GB model wouldn't be enouigh for me. I'm going to wait and see what people have to say about the current storage capacities, once most apps beef up to high-res file sizes. I'm also budgeting for an iPhone 5 this year, and my 2008 MBP is starting to show its age, and I'm considering upgrading my Mac this year. So I'm going to see if I can hold out for another year and wait for the iPad 4 (or the new 2013 iPad, if you prefer). Anyway, with so many people talking about how unusable their iPad 1 has become, I'm curious as to how many other people find their iPad 1 to be quite usable.

Like yourself, I have an iPad 1 that I bought refurbished about 7 months after launch date and I've been using it ever since. Netflix, Photogene and Zite work great and Web Albums for Picasa and Omnifocus, Pages and Numbers are running at acceptable speeds. The new iPad is faster.
The only complaint I have with my iPad 1 is Safari. You simply can not browse complex webpages without stalling. I wanted to buy a new iPad to solve this, but money is tight these days even though I am very well paid. Just like you, I have the same obligations. My iPhone 3GS is getting too slow and too old, so this year I have earmarked and been approved some of that upgrade money towards the iPhone 5 and since I upgraded my Mac to a Core i5 last year, the remainder of that cash allowed me to buy a RIM Playbook which has a fast browser this year and it supports Adobe Flash. So the combined iPad 1 and Playbook solved my urge to upgrade. I'm saving for the next iPad, but I think I will buy a new one when the 1 either dies or the battery goes dead.

Im still loving my ipad1 and have no intention to upgrade YET. The 3 looks great though; i went to play with one this weekend. Its screen is awesome.

I have my 1, it's used daily... I ditched my unlimited 3G when I got my iPhone - i slightly regret that, but oh well... i'm a single mom! LOL!!

I haven't been able to decide what to do. I've recently gone back to school and had originally planned on a new iPad this year for me... and building a Hack Pro (see the single mom thing). However, the school thing means I needed a computer "quick" and I have a new mini and no time to use the power of the Pro I want. My online classes don't work with the iPad at all, so I really was going to buy a 11" MBA and monitor, but plans changed.

I"m not done with my first mini-quarter and I don't know what direction I want to go. I know what the online needs are for my past classes - and I somewhat expect my needs to jump with my future classes... but then again, if they stay mostly bookwork and written work, I can do that on the iPad.

I don't really want the MBA outside of school stuff - the iPad is perfect for my needs. So i guess I'm just trying to make sure i'm not going to shoot myself in the foot if I upgrade to the 3 and skip the MBA.

But I still love my iPad1 - even more than I thought i would!

fair enough. i'm fortunate enough to be able to afford this device at this point. also, i like to support the company i work for. ;)

I did buy an iPad 3 (and yes, I think it's pretty damn sweet). I had an iPad 1, which I was completely satisfied with, but I gave it to my sister in law so she could give it as a birthday present to her daughter.

But I loved that iPad 1, and would never have parted with it as other than a gift. I was a very happy iPad 1 camper.

So I have to give a Monty Python answer 'SPLUNGE'. I didn't upgrade from an iPad 1, as I had no iPad. But I recognize the iPad 3 as superior to the iPad 1. Which I was completely satisfied with. Etc.

I married a single mom, so I know how tough things can be. Good for you for going back to school! My wife went back to school after we got married, and finished a degree she'd started decades before. It opened up new career opportunities for her.

My 2008 MBP is feeling a bit slow and starting to act flaky, even though I had the logic board replaced a few months ago after it died. If I get a new Mac, the new iPad definitely will have to wait until 2013. I'm debating between a MBA with my existing external monitor, or an iMac. If the MBA came with a 480 GB or larger SSD at the current price point, I'd probably get an MBA, but it's probably going to be a couple years before SSD prices drop that much. Since I have a portable iPad, though, an iMac is probably better suited to my Mac needs. The MBA is very nice, though, and it sounds like it would be a good fit for your needs. When it comes to heavy typing, I still prefer a conventional keyboard over the iPad's virtual keyboard.

No problem. :) I've been an Apple fan ever since I bought a used Mac IIce back in 1992. Then came a Power Mac G4 tower in 2000, an iBook in 2001, a MBP in 2008, and of course iPods, iPhones, and the iPad. I can't wait for iTV, whatever form it takes.

As an owner of a perfect original iPad, I am not interested in the 3rd gen mostly because I am not willing to play return roulette with screen bleeding, yellow screen, dead pixels, or other manufacturing flaws. I also do not feel the need to upgrade to a warmer device.

Oh that makes me smile - you mean someone might want to take on me and my crew? LOL!! I joke with my male friends about no one wanting to touch us. When you have a child that might always have to live at home, well, dating looks really scary. Heck, dating was scary when I was young - and i'm 43 now!

I've known my only option was going back to school - the biggest obstacle has been working it around my daughters special needs. I think it will work, as will the future job. I hope anyway... i have all these student loans to pay.

My daughter is using my 1/07 MBP (gee, was it that long ago?) It had a new logic board too - something is still very wrong with it though. Hence the urgent need for another computer. With 2 of us doing online classes we need it.

I know the MBA would work "now" - but I still so hate to spend that much $$ and then decide the iPad would have worked.

I think the iPad3 with the Zagg Folio case would work, so I decided to order the Incase Origami Case for my BT keyboard and try that the next couple of weeks. I'll know more then how much lecture the classes will have online - my last set of classes had not much. If they don't have a lot - then I can shift to the iPad more... and upgrade! LOL!!

Maybe I can just win the lottery and buy them both?!?! (which involves buying a ticket...)

I bought the iPad1 on launch day in Germany, used it for a few months, then shelved it after buying a late 2010 11" MBA. But I rediscovered the iPad for various reasons and have used it daily for the past six months.

The new iPad has been extremely tempting as I have an iPad subscription for my newspaper and do a lot of other reading on it. I ordered the new iPad as soon as pre-orders started, but canceled the next day. Had a good look at it yesterday but didn't buy although the screen is amazing.

Reading should be an absolute pleasure on the third gen, but I somehow can't justify spending quite a bit of money while the original iPad still works perfectly well and has been in use for less than a year.

But I may be even more tempted if there really is a 7" iPad later this year...

hm, after reading the Kindle v iPad thread I am even more torn.

I use my iPad1 almost exclusively for reading: my newspaper, books, surfing the web.
Photos are on it as well, but I game very rarely and don't watch movies.

I sometimes have a little bit of eyestrain, but is it really worth the upgrade. What do former iPad1 using readers say?
Also, I only use a handful of apps and have almost 4GB left on my 16GB. Another 16GB or 32 to be on the safe side?
thanks in advance for answers

(yes, deep down I probably just need the final push to upgrade)

I've got a 1st gen, its jailbroken and I honestly could wait for the 4, but I don't see it having too many innovative upgrades from the 3, so I ordered a 3.

The crashing is absolutely terrible by the way as everyone has said. I actually have switched to a different browser to avoid it.
