To me, theres a bigger difference between the 5 and 5S than there was between the 4 and 4S.

5s is a huge upgrade IMO:
- A7 processor twice as fast as the A6
- Fingerprint sensor for easy secure unlocking
- Longer battery life
- Dual LED flash
- Gold color option
- 64 bit iOS
- Improvements to camera quality
- Slow motion video capture
- Facetime HD camera
- M7 coprocessor
- Free iWork / iPhoto / iMovie
- More LTE bands packed in for international travel

I'm going from the 4S to the 5S hopefully this Friday, I'll probably just stick with that cycle from now on.

I had the 4 and the 4S and was overall happier with the 4S, it had the new design but wasn't anywhere near as slow and had all of the nice new features that weren't supported on the 4.

In all honesty, I think this may be the biggest iPhone update ever.

I'm upgrading, but I always do!

It's funny same time last year many who had a 4S were perfectly fine with keeping their 4S over the newly redesigned 5. They claim the 5 wasn't much faster and the camera wasn't that much better and 5 was just a taller iPhone with LTE which many did not need.

We will have the same discussion next year when redesign iPhone 2014 comes out. People will say their iPhone 5S is good enough and a wide/taller iPhone with bigger screen isn't needed.

I'm not - but not because I don't want to..

I got my iPhone 5 the week it launched. My current contract with Verizon is up in February 2014. My fiancee's is up not long after that, so we'll be getting a plan together next year (likely after we're married in May).

I don't want to add a new line and use that, because that would extend my current contract. I also don't just have the cash to throw around to buy a brand new phone (even if I sold my 5, in it's condition I'd likely still be paying around $300 OOP for the 5s).

So unfortunately, looks like I'm sticking with my 5 for a while, unless anyone has a better idea for what I could do?

The thing that many iPhone 5 users want - a larger screen (possibly 4.5-4.7") - is not there in the 5S. There are rumours that Apple will implement this in 6. If I upgrade now, I'll find myself upgrading next year.

I'll use the cash to buy the iPad 5.

You want a massive phone that won't fit in your pocket buy an android.

Till then leave me out of your generalizations ;)

I will be going to a near by Verizon store Friday morning to pick a 5S to replace my 5.

If you don't mind me asking, are you just going to pay full price out of pocket? Selling your current 5? If you read my post just a few posts up, I'm with Verizon and really want to upgrade but in a conundrum..looking for input

I don't think poster wanted a massive phone. The nexus 4 with 4.7 inch screen fits well even in small pocket.

Apple can easily make a 4.3-4.7 inch screen without affecting one handed function very much.

I'm gonna make a lot of peoples' heads explode. I just became upgrade eligible Saturday and my iPhone 5 for $99 is on it's way.

Twice as fast at what? The IP5 is pretty close to being instant as far as I can tell. Games, yes...opening mail, camera, ect?

I'm not super excited about this one, but I'm going to stop in a few stores on launch day and see if I can find a gold 64. For me the main reason is the camera upgrades and, specifically, the slow mo video. Will I use it much? I don't know. But that is the feature I'm more excited to see. I trust that the processor upgrade will make for a better experience day to day. I think the M7 shows promise for improving battery life, along with endless possibilities for apps. And although I wasn't interested in the Touch ID before the keynote, I think it's great. I will finally secure my device and I won't need to do anything but touch the home button to unlock my phone. I think all these things make for a pretty substantial change honestly. Going from my 32 gig 4 to the 64 gig 5 with LTE and a larger screen was probably bigger, but this is nothing to sneeze at. I chose not to go from 4 to 4S. I have an upgrade open on my account, so if I can find one, I figure I'll do it.

I am ordering over the phone on Friday

I have sold my iphone 5 (have a spare iphone to use right now) and I will be picking up the 32gb 5S through at&t early upgrade.

It is only costing me about $100 (as I need to pay taxes, plus a bit for the phone) so I am more than happy to pay $100 and upgrade to the latest iphone which I end up doing every year anyways!

I'm still debating on whether I should. My 5 is in pristine condition, so I could probably probably fetch a good amount on eBay, which would pay for a portion of the 5S. Although I will probably wait until the craziness dies down before I place my order.

The forum would be cluttered with redundant threads that have, more or less, the same content. That's the difference it would make.

No one forces you to come in this or the other ones. Nor are you tasked to be clutter controller. Move on.

Definitely no. I might be trading it in for the Note 3 however, unless Apple releases an ipad mini with retina.

I'm considering upgrading from the 5. I've had my 32gb 5 on craigslist and have an offer for $400 but don't know if I'm going to accept it. All the lines on my account got the 5 on release day last year and I'm the only one eligible for a discounted price. I'm thinking it's because I buy the phone at the discounted price each year but I could be wrong. I can upgrade for $550 to the 32gb 5s so I have to decide if it's worth $150 for a new phone.

I definitely wouldn't call the camera a massive upgrade. It's not same obvious gap as it were between the 4 and the 4S. But it'll be interesting to see the actual differences once Anandtech get their hands on it.

Note I said camera/photo system. With the 5S not only is the camera improved, but so are all the supporting elements, which yields, IMO, a greatly improved experience.

(I've posted this a couple of times in other threads):

The aperture is larger, the optics are better. The underlying hardware supporting the camera (eg. CPU, etc) is greatly improved. Those 8 megapixels? On the 5S, those 8 megapixels are 15% larger than the same 8 megapixels on the 5 which, among other things, helps yield 33% better low-light improvement over the 5 .. and the 5 already had significantly better low-light performance than the 4S.

Upgrades the 5S camera has over the camera in the 5 that I can think of off the top of my head (let alone the 4S -- the camera has improved every year):
  • Larger aperture for the lens (this lets more light in: this is A Good Thing)
  • 15% larger sensor/pixel size (this gives higher quality color, less noise in the photo, overall a measurably better quality photo -- outdoors and in)
  • 33% better low light performance
  • The dual LED system that measures the 'temperature' of the ambient light creates a flash 'color' that matches the ambient light creates greatly improved, more natural looking flash photos.
  • Because of the better hardware on the 5S, you can run the camera in 'burst mode' which will shoot 10 full sized photos per second as long as you hold the button down.
  • You can film HD video at 120 fps (4x normal) if you'd like, to get slow mo effects.
  • When you take a photo, the camera system actually takes several photos back-to-back in rapid succession, analyzes each one, and uses the 'best' one. This all happens so fast as to appear to be instant.
  • When you take a photo in a low-light situation, the camera system actually takes several photos back-to-back in rapid succession, analyzes each one, and will composite the 'finished' photo based on the best parts of each. This helps mitigate 'blurring' of subjects that is so common in low light photos. This all happens so fast as to be appear to be instant.
The improvements to the camera system on the 5S are significant.

Yes

I am.... But I do every year. I'm actually really excited about the fingerprint sensor and the camera (slo-mo, burst shots I will use quite often). even if I didn't upgrade every year, I would still make the jump to the 5S.

AND NO. I do not have piles of money. 2 lines from Verizon staggered by 1 year (Extra $10 a month) - upgrade every year.
Sell previous model for $300-350 depending on condition

$10 a month x 1 year: $120 dollars
New iPhone under contract: $200 dollars
--------------
$320 Dollars

The most i've ever spent for a new one is $20. normally I make a couple bucks out of the deal.

Nope, I will keep my 5 and wait for the 6 gen iphone, looking forward to the new rmbp and ipad mini ( I hope for retine screen ) :D.

The 4 was a snail compared to the 4S when I upgraded. I couldn't have imagined sticking with the 4 for another year for how slow it was.

I'll wait to see how much faster the 5S will be over the 5. If it's as big a difference as the 4S over 4 was, then I will pull the trigger.

I thought the 4 survived.. but I honestly have to ask..

I just spoke with AT&T and if I wanted the 5S or 5 i would have to pay the early upgrade fee which is 250 + plus price of phone. If i sell my current device i could probably get 350-400 for it. I wonder if its better to buy a IP5 on craigs so I can get the 6 when it comes out.

It's a tough choice. There are some really good deals on the 5 out right now and I think that's the best move value-wise but I guess if you want the latest tech, you gotta pay for it.

Yeah you do! I might just sell my Note 2 + an IP4 and get a used 5 till the 6 comes out. I should not use my upgrade on the 5S.
