A few people have mentioned holding shift to slow the animations when Dashboard widgets are closed, but there is more to it, so I'll summarize what I noticed so far. Post an updated version of my list if you know more.

Holding shift will slow these effects:
invoking Dashboard (F12)
dismissing Dashboard (F12)
opening the Widget bar (+ icon)
closing the Widget bar (x icon)
changing Widget bar pages (left or right arrow icon)
changing Widget shapes (e.g., clicking on the weather/calendar widget to expand/contract)
Holding shift doesn't slow these effects:
flipping (the i icon)
swirling (command-R)

If you have lots of files in Spotlight results (ie lots of images) and choose to view them in a window list view, you don't have to click the i next to each one to get more information on them individually.

If you hold down the option key while you click on the first one ( the i anyhow), the information for all of them will open in a long list format. Much easier to scan!

Nice! :) When Apple adds a little excerpt from each file to the info that shows where the matches occurred, à la a Google web search, this will rock my socks. :D

Tiger has introduced a new version of the firewall, ipfw2. Check out the man page for ipfw.

So if you are like me and create your own rules via commandline or alternate GUI source, it's time to revise your ruleset. And possibly not use BrickHouse anymore (it doesn't seem to be getting updated). I suspect SunShield will be updated for changes..

Do you have both UK/British and US/American layouts turned on in your international prefs? Does the switch happen when you change apps? It could be that you are popping into an app that wants to default to US English, or which stickies its localization choice (so that if you set it to US once, it stays that way even if you change back to British while you're on another app, changing permanently only if you change while you are in that app). Alternatively, are you accidentally hitting the keyboard combination to switch (Apple-Space)? It's easy to do accidentally...

Yes, but it never used to do it until a few days ago, and it doesn't switch back to good old British afterwards. Why has it changed?

I think because of a new setting in International prefs. Make sure that in the Input Menu tab of international prefs, the option to use the same input method for all documents is checked, rather than the separate method for separate docs option.

- Speed/acceleration on my MX900 mouse (using default drivers) is much improved.
- Safari is much faster.
- Mail is much faster.
- iChat's "Buddy List" window takes much less space.
- Finder windows take up less space.
- Bootup time seems to be improved.

I'm sure there's more, but I've only had it installed for a few hours.

Just got Tiger installed yesterday... man, this thread takes a while to get through...

Still no undo on closing tabs in Safari... (I'm using Safari because the Tiger ate my Fox, as I've complained about elsewhere...)

Love Mail's new look, but the former version showed the status in the narrow line below the Toolbar, i.e. when you were sending a large mail it showed the percent send or if you received a large mail it showed the sender and subject... where has that status line gone...???

iCal has gotten really slow at starting and quitting... hmm... don't know if that's good or bad...

Now, with all these new programs, and specially since even iCal can collect Calendars in folders (i.e. Calendar Groups), my most pressing question: Where is iTunes 5...?

They made man files for the new mdutil and textutil command line tools... :)

Another [genuine] peeve I have is the new 'Get info' behaviour; when you hit cmd+i on multiple files, it brings up info windows for each. Not helpful, as I usually used that to tell me how big files are for DVD writing purposes and such... not to mention the fact that I'm using 1024 resolution. First time it happened I was like... yeah, can't see anything else now. I know cmd+opt+i does the old 'get info' now, but wouldn' it have been better to keep old functionality and just add new, rather than break habits?
Actually there is another way (than cmd-opt-I)... if you mark all files and folders on a location using cmd-A and them hit cmd-I it will show a single summary info window... you can even remove files from the selection by cmd-clicking them... :)

The one thing i wish you could do on the world clock widget is be able to make he clock say your town or city. I do not like always having to use Atlanta but it gets the job done

Cool effect, but the Dictionary widget crashed horribly...

Hooray! iChat now has Edit -> Paste and Match Style (option-shift-command-V) like TextEdit, so you can paste text with the current font/style.
In Stickies, too... :)

I've started using Safari, in part to give 2.0 a try, and in larger part because slow entry in textboxes in FF started to drive me crazy. :( This (undo close tab) is something I really miss...I found that a fair workaround (a couple of extra clicks, no keyboard shortcut! :() is to open a new tab and then use the history menu to get the old page back, since Safari's history menu is pretty good. But yes, I really miss undo close tab. :(

iCal's start/shutdown times for me do not seem drastically different...perhaps see if it gets better after a couple of boot cycles? I have noticed that there is some kind of subtle difference in the way that the pop-up iCal alarm window's focus works. I have to hold the button down for an unusual time on top of the dismiss icon, if I don't focus the alarm window by clicking outside the dismiss button first. I don't know exactly what's different, but it isn't the same as it was....

Ok, so now that we've found all these cool features (and bugs) in Dashboard, now for the bigger question- What's it for??
I am having serious trouble understanding why someone would use this application, if you can call it that. Why would I press an extra key (or click an icon in the dock) in order to bring up a little doo-hickey to change the song playing when i could use that same initial effort to open iTunes itself? And same with tha Address Book.... why go into dashboard when the application itself is just as accessible? And things like the world clock.... what about that little guy up in the right hand corner? Sure, weather info, tracking info, and the phone book are usefull... but it seems like a strange way to go about things. Does anyone else see what i mean?
I don't mean to rant, but I feel this isn't as big a feature as it's coming on to be...

Mitch, I hate to do the "did you actually read my post" thing to you, but.... :D Did you? Did you try what I suggested? ;) When I select multiple files, and press Option-Apple-I (note the Option!), I get a single info box for all the files together, irrespective of how many files I selected. This was pointed out here by another user. When I do *this*, the hidden files box is *NOT* greyed out, and it does work as advertised. :) Or is that not the case for you?

Yes, I did read your entire post. I thought I had tried that one already. I'm sure I just did something wrong. I'm anxious to try this out when I get home to my Mac. I'm excited. I can't believe someone actually figured this one out. Kudos! :)

Ok, but..... when iTunes is in your dock, wouldn't it be easier just to click on the icon itself? Yes, yes, the dashboard allows you to remove more items from the dock... but why would you want to do that? Is it really that much more unsettling to have numerous dock icons than to go into another app to execute the same action?

Yes. It seems kind of odd that if you want to do one thing you open up 6 or 8 widgets. Pretty much of a gimmic IMHO.

I don't know if this worked in Panther or not, but I have much more scroll wheel functionality. PhotoShop allows me to changes number increments... I noticed this because I have my mouse scroll wheel click set for the paste command. Last night I was pasting 70% into 18 layers (setting the opacity) and I noticed some of them were going in as 76%! I thought WTF, then I noticed how the wheel was adjusting the numbers!

What do people think? Is this a good move or should they have stuck with .pdf?

Very good thing. In the PDF screenshots, colors were often way off and full of compression artifacts. Now it's much closer to the actual screen.

Booting is faster. Part of it seems to be that the Login screen appears sooner than it used to, while other background processes are still starting up. But there is an overall speedup too. I can reboot 5 times while my office Windows PC is restarting once.

A more important change that I am very pleased with: When you press shift-command-rightarrow in Safari, it used to mean GO TO NEXT TAB in all cases. Now it means that most of the time, but means SELECT TEXT TO END OF LINE if the focus is in a text field on an input form (as I am while typing this post).

I can't count how many times I have pressed shift-command-rightarrow while typing under Panther, trying to select text on the current line, but instead found myself on another tab. Thanks, Apple! That alone is worth at least $12.90 of my $129.

So *that's* why it doesn't always work for me to move from tab to tab.... I think I hate this change as much as you love it. :p ;) :D

I agree, BUT on my 12" Powerbook it is great. I can control iTunes without having to have it on my desktop. I can use a calculator without having to go through my Apps folder and it keeps things that I dont need off my dock. OK I dont use it much on my PowerMac with a 19" monitor but on the little screen it is perfect.

Auto-complete fun

In some Cocoa-based programs, hitting Escape in the middle of typing a word will bring up a list of matching words for auto-completion.

I've confirmed that it works in TextEdit and Adium, among others. It will not work in Safari because WebKit uses a different sort of textview.

See attached.

Edit: I take that back -- it isn't really all that new. The keystroke is, as in Panther you had to hit Option+Escape to invoke the auto-complete list. Oddly enough, Option+Escape does work in Safari 2.0, even though it's just plain ol' Escape in other Cocoa apps in Tigwyre.

C'mon Apple, let's see some consistency among applications here. :p
