i dont remember it in panther, maybe it was added in 10.3.9, or maybe i just didnt notice it.

Nah, it was in Safari from early on. I think it was on the first version of Safari I tried, which would have been circa 10.3.4. Maybe how long you have to hold the button down on top of the arrow has changed, though?

i hold the back button for <1 second before the previously visited pages show.

I really don't know if this is a new Tiger feature, but today I discovered the "shuddering" effect when typing in a wrong password while trying to fast user switch. It's very, very funny IMO.

Yes, this is in Panther too. And yes, it is really cute! :)

hide multiple file extensions

Yes. I've made a discovery. Tiger no longer has ability in the Finder to hide multiple file extensions. This really sucks too. Because then you have to go into each and every file you see and hide the extension for each one separately. As you can guess this can get very painstakingly annoying after a while. This is why they had it in Panther. Why oh why did they get rid of this in Tiger???

Is this related to the issue that the default Get Info is now separate windows for each file highlighted? If so, have you tried selecting all files for which you want to hide extensions, and then pressing Option-Apple-I? Or when you do this and get the single window information for multiple files, does the hide extension mysteriously fail to work?

If you can't connect to to mac over your Lan form your PC, that is because you have to now authorize the user account before you can connect and transfer files.

To do this you goto System Preferences and then Sharing - click on Windows Sharing and on the right of the box is the Account's buttons. Double click on it and select the account you want to access then enter your password.

You can now access your mac over your network.

Yes, well, it's kind of both. You see when you select a certain number of files together and get info on them, individual windows will pop up for each one. One can then go into each window and uncheck hide extension. I'm not sure what the number is, but apparently at some point a single get info window will come up for selecting multiple files. It's more than 10 I believe. I haven't gotten it down to the exact number when this changes. However, when this window comes up yes, the "hide extension" option is mysteriously greyed out. I have no idea why Apple would do this. They put hidden extensions in OS X for a reason - to keep their clean user interface that is being boggled by the necessity to co-exist with the rest of the disgusting world. Sorry to be so dramatic about it, but that's how I feel. At least Apple could do a better job of retaining what makes their os stand out from the rest of them. This was one HUGE one. NO UGLY extensions tacked on to file names. What they need is one global option to just shut off (or hide) all extensions all together. The Finder preference, contrary to what many people say, DOESN'T do this.

Firewall advanced button

You can

Block UDP Traffic - Blocks UDP traffic

Enable Firewall Logging- provides information about firewall activity.

Enable Stealth Mode - ensures that any uninvited traffic receives no response - not even an acknowledgment that your computer exists.

Here's one I'm surprised I haven't seen mentioned:

-If you turn on "Show all file extensions" in the finder, it really shows all of them--including the ".app" on applications, which it didn't before. That was a bit disorienting at first!

As well as the previously mentioned changes to TextEdit (and other Cocoa apps?) to do the "columns" text selection with opt-drag, it seems you can also do non-contiguous selections with command-drag!

Mitch, I hate to do the "did you actually read my post" thing to you, but.... :D Did you? Did you try what I suggested? ;) When I select multiple files, and press Option-Apple-I (note the Option!), I get a single info box for all the files together, irrespective of how many files I selected. This was pointed out here by another user. When I do *this*, the hidden files box is *NOT* greyed out, and it does work as advertised. :) Or is that not the case for you?

Hooray! iChat now has Edit -> Paste and Match Style (option-shift-command-V) like TextEdit, so you can paste text with the current font/style.

A discovery I don't like: You can no longer put the mailboxes in Mail on the right side of the message area.

Does that mean that we can choose a font style and color and the other person be able to see it? (someone on aim) That always bothered me in ichat.

Noticed:
Airport reception has more bars, and loads pages when on the 1st bar.

everything is noticeably faster

powerbook is a little warmer than it used to be

new screensavers are very cute

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the NEC 3500A is now natively supported in Tiger, no more patch burn. They probably use it in the new revision of the Powermacs.

One thing I would like to see is the ability to show what song you are playing in iChat while you are away... not just while you're "active"... that and animated buddy icons.

Didn't see this posted, unless I missed it.

Anyway I can finally right click in Safari and get a back/forward option.

A great show off trick to Windoze users:

With panther you could hold down shift whilst minimising a window to the dock with genie effect for a slow mo effect.
This also works with Dashboard and you can do both together.

Love command R for dashboard and the whole system just seems zippier.

The airport bars have been changed to reflect the speed your connected at rather than signal strength.

How great would it be if Dasher used the slow-mo version to ease the DB in when inactivity triggered it? :D

I gotta say, I was *not* particularly enthusiastic about DB before I got Tiger, but I find myself actually referring to it (particularly for weather) quite a lot. If only the Cal widget showed iCal events as advertised. :( The iTunes widget needs some work too....

I agree.

It would be nice to have it open iTunes, without having to "open" the itunes window behind the DB. I do like the interface, and the idea of the psudo click wheel interface. I hope that is included in the next iTunes mini player interface.

Is this new to Tiger - It only works if you have a mouse with 2 or more buttons.

If you have more than 1 window open in Safari and you minimize them to the dock, go up to the safari icon press the right mouse button and you will see listed all the Safari windows listed by their website address. You can now click on the website address on the list and the window will reopen.

Here is a real bug.

If you are using the magnify effect on the applications in the dock. if you right click on the any icon and move the mouse away from the menu and click on the desktop the icon stays magnified and will not go away until you move the mouse over the dock again.

If this is a feature then what is the point?

This was actually in Panther too. A number of other apps have useful right-click actions -- iTunes will let you do things like pause/play, change the rating on the current song, etc. I believe SysPrefs will let you choose what pane you want to be in. Sadly, Safari lets you see multiple windows but not tabs within a window this way. :(

The dock thing is wack. It does that to me. I never notice because I have the mag turned off, though. ;) Except right now, because it's on, because I wanted to test it for you. And oop, there it goes off again. :D
