Yes. It seems kind of odd that if you want to do one thing you open up 6 or 8 widgets. Pretty much of a gimmic IMHO.

Gimmicky- yes. Also quite useful.

I've been working all day on updating the text on my companies web site (over 50 pages). Used Dashboard frequently to check my stocks (saved my a trip to another app and clicking/refreshing bookmark), check the number to order Chinese food for lunch (again, saving me from launching another app or looking for the menu) and countless times using the dictionary/thesaurus. And each time I hit F12, I got to see my dancing hula girl. Please, don't tell me it's all gimmicks.

The iChat icon changed, and I noticed it by mousing over to the dock to launch it and having a momentary brain stutter, since I didn't see what I was used to. It wasn't hard to find, of course, but that's how I noticed it had changed. Then of course I had to try to remember what exactly it used to look like. This information is easy to find online, but I simply hadn't paid attention enough to expect the change.

The change makes sense, since iChat is not AIM-only.

In some Cocoa-based programs, hitting Escape in the middle of typing a word will bring up a list of matching words for auto-completion.

Wow that is amazing, and very helpful.

If you have a messy folder and you go to view and then cleanup, it will actually fill up all the empty space from the top down so you have the smallest window possible and the apps are as compact as possible. I noticed in panther that if i had some apps at the top of a window and a bunch at the way bottom that if i hit cleanup that the bottom ones would straighten but not come all the way up to the top.

So, what I reading in this forum is that Tiger has eliminated the two-finger scroll(one of my favorites) and that the Powerbooks are getting a little hotter? Am I really the only one who likes that two-finger scroll? Is there any way around this?

Two-finger scroll still works great! And I'm with you on this one, I love the scrolling feature of my new powerbook.
Use it all the time!

It supports Jabber - and you can get MSN/Yahoo through a Jabber server.
You'll need to register a Jabber account through a Jabber client (PSI) and associate your MSN account with that but yes, then you can use iChat to IM to your MSN buddies (file transfers/audio/video etc don't work tho)

Tiger b0rk'd some early builds of iScroll, a freeware program to bring this functionality to some iBooks and to some Powerbooks that were made before it was added to the PB line. There is, however, at least a beta with Tiger functionality. It has no impact on the native functionality in current PB's. There is also a Tiger-compatible version of Sidetrack, which provides traditional Windows-style extended trackpad functionality (scrolling by swiping the sides, additional mouse buttons mapped to corner taps, etc) to most iBooks and PBs that do not have the built-in scrolling function.

Address Book sync

Glad my Moto V620 can now iSync via BT, but not happy I still can't use it with Address Book.

I have no flag in my Menu bar, I don't know why, but I really don't mind either.

I have increased signal strength on my airport too and I love Dashboard, exactly what I needed.

Haven't had the chance to test everything out, but I am planning on putting Automator to good use.

I have a Siemens S66, which is not at all supported by iSync. But I can still transfer my address book contacts to it. If that's what you're trying to do, first set up your Moto to work with your Mac using the Bluetooth Utility, and make sure you check "Use with Address Book." Then open Address Book and click on the Bluetooth button to pair with your phone. Then select all your Vcards using Command+A, go to the Card menu, and hit "Send These Cards." Then pick your Moto out of the list, and it should transfer them all. On my Siemens, I had to go to the address book and say Import first, at which point it said "Ready to receive." Your Moto might have something similar. But it worked like a charm.

Love Mail's new look, but the former version showed the status in the narrow line below the Toolbar, i.e. when you were sending a large mail it showed the percent send or if you received a large mail it showed the sender and subject... where has that status line gone...???

I hate that as well. What gives? Has anyone figured how to get status indication on the main window rather than taking up space with the Activity Viewer?

And what about sound alerts when there is no mail? I can't seem to set that up now. I'm so used to have an indication that there's nothing to download when I hit "Get Mail" that right now, it just feels like it's not really checking.

I looked through the whole thread, and may have missed it, but some third-party PCI cards no longer prevent sleep in Tiger.

Thank you, Apple. This one was pissing me off big time.

If you use the Mail Preferences -> Accounts -> Advanced -> Remove copy from server -> "Now" button, you can no longer watch the progress in the status bar. If you have lots of server-based messages to remove, it can take a while, and you ought to be able to see the progress as you used to.

Another thing is that if you click on the network the view is columned. My tiger is working great so far. I just wish mail would hide at startup so i am still waiting for a good gmail widget

I just saw that lastnight when I set up sharing with my G3.

Looking through this Thread Makes me Cry

Here's my biggest Tiger discovery:

I have not received my up-to-date copy yet!

I don't think you really want those. They dont 'do' anything, they are just sample for developer to look at, so that they can figure out how make widgets do certain things.

You can look at 'hello world' on the apple developer homepage... its just there to illustrate how css works in widgets. (its just a rounded orange rectangel that says hello world, thats it)

But if you still want them, just let me know. Try all the widgets you get of the internet first. They are much more fun. :)

Yes, they are (by default, that is). Nice--I like that better than PDF. Not sure how you're supposed to take a screenshot of a 2nd monitor now, though--I'll have to experiment.

I have a 2nd monitor, and All it does is create a second file, so If you take a screenshot, you get 2 files:

I assume this post refers to the native two-finger scrolling on the new Powerbooks. Does anyone know if iScroll2 still works on supported Powerbooks? I haven't found that one listed in some of the compatibility/incompatibility lists I've seen.

Just answered my own post.

One user, at least, thinks it works well with Tiger.
I'll see when I update later this month.

Automator fun for all!

By now we all know that Automator is a new feature of "Tiger" ... but I did discover something cool that you can do with it. This makes my workload a whole lot easier.

1. Make an Automator task that moves selected files to a pre-specified directory... make as many as you want.

2. Save it as a "Finder Plug-In."

3. Control click and you can very easily transfer files without clutter or a Dock-Full-O-Aliases.

4. Enjoy!

Automator is what Applescript tries desperately to be. An easy to use application to do common tasks.

I think Automator may become the dark horse and become the really truly useful feature of Tiger. Automating tasks seems pretty dry to the average user, but it is probably the most productive feature. This feature could save design firms and printing bureaus tons of money in the long term.
