Heathrow + the tube one of the slowest option for the city - takes around an hour 10. Stanstead has a connecting train service right into Liverpool street in 45 minutes. City airport is even better. Even Gatwick into Waterloo then the Waterloo and City line is faster than the tube from Heathrow.

Heathrow is the obvious choice for connecting flights (particularly Asia or transatlantic). For European stuff, the other airports are often better.

not if you're final destination is somewhere on the tube west of center (plus you don't have to wait outside for a connection.) perhaps the transit time if faster, but with exchanges and potential delays, the tube is better, especially if you're meeting at a restaurant/bat/club directly from the airport.

The point is, though - that all are fine, and none of the non-Heathrow options warrant a "why fly into Gatwick or Stansted, unless you're doing a discount vacation?" dismissal (especially given you've never actually been to Stanstead). Just makes you sound clueless...

novel antibiotics are hot? you're just pulling stuff from your butt now.

you must have no idea that I run a research group investigating novel antibiotics

most of my funding is from the DFG, ERC and Wellcome Trust

test me if you don't believe me.

how many budget airline fly out of Heathrow?

almost none.

therefore, a greater percentage of travelers flying out of Gatwick/Stansted are budget travelers.

but, whatever, i'm sure you fly more out the secondary airports than I do

Ohhhhh, I see, you're supposedly doing research in an area and therefore it is hot. Got it. Cheers mate. Shouldn't you be skiing or something?

A fair amount. The old BMI franchise flew there.

Also European travel. Airlines like Swissair and Lufthansa have code shares out of City airport.

but, whatever, i'm sure you fly more out the secondary airports than I do
I fly wherever is most convenient. Luton can be quite good (but the airport is a dive). City airport to Antwerp is a fantastic flight... I timed myself from the departure lounge in London to my hotel reception in Antwerp at exactly 1 hour.

I've already skied for the day. It's 17 here and the small places don't have lights.

you accused me of pulling stuff out of my ass.

lol

In my experience every researcher thinks their area is 'hot', and that their group is on the cutting edge. It's rarely true. :)

lol

the ERC/DFG/WT would disagree with you. they "put the money where their mouth is", so to speak.

But we can still shoot anyone who doesn't sit in a chair with aluminum arm rests right?
In the head? Of course. And people that eat KFC too.
I think we should realise he's just trolling the board! It's pretty clear his 'knowledge' of things like salt, chairs, e. coli mutations etc is simply the result of a cursory google search.

Then again I should probably realise I'm putting off starting today's revision!
Most likely, but repitively bringing up past threads is derailing current threads...

Not really, when I spent a year in research just about every group had funding from some outside sources. A government body, research council, charity, private company etc.

a whole year!

all by yourself? awwwwwwww, how cute!

Lol, no comeback then? I wasn't interested in being in research, but had to spend a year doing it. Don't regret it, but not for me. Point is just about every group I interacted with had someone handing it out money.

of course, I have a quite simple. your perspective changes when you run a group versus "being in research" for a year. i don't even understand what that means, apparently not so much.

See that's my point, many people running research groups will claim their work is 'hot'. It's a common, but usually incorrect, perspective.

i don't think you have any idea what you're talking about. how is one "in research for a year?"

You say you are a biochemist working in a German laboratory, but given the number of down voles your posts have, it could be that you are the lab rat.

KGB:rolleyes:
