my refurbished Magellan maestro works just fine for 75$. why waste my iPhones battery life and have to use such a small screen?

I can understand that if you have a standalone unit you won't want the app. But you may want to consider it if you only want to carry one device. Eg I used to have to carry with me everyday:
Work mobile
Work bberry
iPod
Satnav
Personal mobile

Now I have it down to:
iPhone (personal)
Bberry
Satnav (shortly to be ditched when the app is released)

I heard the cradle comes with the app free. To just download from itunes store cost the same amount as the cradle.

This is why I prefer Sprint to the other phone companies in this regard.

Most plans include Navigation for free. Great stuff.

you dont NEED the dock...you can use it without...they just want to make it easier for you to use their app...

I agree that a month-to-month subscription would be bad, but I wouldn't mind paying another $20 for each year's new map. Unlike a monthly subscription, I can chose to skip that if I wanted to.

Like, I'd buy it every 2 or 3 years once I feel there's a big enough change in local roads to justify it.

That would be fine with me.

Agreed - I would pay $40-50 (one time fee) and would appreciate the OPTION of upgrading instead of being forced to pay a monthly fee. I suppose even if they go with the monthly fee option we can't blame them for trying to make money (especially if the monthly fee is maybe like $1 haha).

Seriously, people need to quit bringing up Sprint. Sprint used to be the most expensive carrier, they are so cheap now to stop the mass migration of their customers to other carriers.

i think itd be kinda cool if they had it so you could buy the cradle in stores and theyd give you a voucher to get the app at home

TomTom Release

Well I find the immenent release of TomTom a lot more exciting than the 3GS announcement. Wonder how much it will be and how will they sell the window clamp? Citing!

it will be cheaper than a regular GPS, and the price will be attractive enough so people won't just pay a little more for a regular gps unit.

i would guess around $100 for the software and another $20 for the clamp at the apple store

My guess is $1-$10 for the app, $50-$100 for the cradle/amplifier and $50-$80 for the maps.

I agree with the above, it'll be around $150, but it won't be under $100.

I think the maps need to stay around $50 - $75 if they need (or have the option of) annual updates. I know to get the updates for my car it's nearly $300. I figure every few years I will update them, perhaps every 2 at the very least.

$300 for updates? For what brand??

I have a TomTom that I bought almost three years ago and I've never had to pay for any updates (mapshares and all) unless I want maps outside the US (which I don't) or additional voices.

I should have been more clear. When I said "updates for my car" I meant the factory navi in my Honda. And yes, $300. :(

I've got a Garmin Nuvi, had a tomtom but it broke, got a cheap Nuvi as I didn't think this would be too long coming out. The Nuvi is a bit ropey, probably give it to my sis. Definately getting this app. Only got an 8GB, hope it's not too big...

eh, i think its going to be $50-70 total..i mean come on, theyre pretty much giving you only software..the actual unit is the iphone..so this should definitely be much cheaper than stand alone units that tomtom produces

Anyone still going to get this if they already have a GPS?

No, what is the point? To use your iPhone as a GPS instead of your GPS? My factory navi is far easier to use for both viewing and inputting destinations. I've used the maps feature before as a pseudo GPS and it is difficult (and the phone was mounted in such a way that I didn't completely hinder my driving).

I'm also not inclined to pay extra for this when I paid a pretty penny for the navi in my car.

You Guys are all nuts this thing wont sell for more than $29.99 any more than that an NO One in their right mind is going to buy it. I Can get a great GPS unit for $100, TOMTOM would be stupid to charge over $29.99

100% agree.
