Well I returned mine. It was beautiful and I loved it, but I adjusted the screen every which way I could and it gave me a horrible headache to look at.

Thinking of MAYBE going XR

Likely a safer alternative in your particular situation. And it will be cheaper, but more than anything, it has Apples LCD liquid retina, should rectify any headache issues you might experience.

I used to be a notch hater, but about 4 months ago I saw a co-workers X and I asked him if he got “used to” the notch. He said after about a week he didn’t even notice it. I also liked the OLED display, although Apple’s LCD is great I prefer the OLED.

That’s were I am now, and it took less than three days. For the most part, I just don’t notice it and when I do, it’s really not an issue. It’s a pleasant surprise so I’ll happily backtrack on my original thoughts a year ago. :D

I haven’t made a move yet on the upgrade but 8+ user here.

FID:
Wife has had FID for a year with her X (which she loves.. upgraded from 6S+) and she loathes FID. For her it works less than half the time. I see her input her code all the time. On the other hand, this weekend I was caught in a rainstorm with my wife at an airport in Dallas (we are in Jax) and I could not answer or access my phone because TID and the screen would not recognize my fingers. I have since setup Hey Siri. I was able to use my Apple Watch to text her. It did make me think. TID is faster IMO.

XSM:
YUUGE.. and king of video. Outside of video, IMO, there isn’t THAT much difference in it versus the 8+ or X for that matter. You get some more text on the screen (more than 8+ and X) but how hard is scrolling. Battery life will be about on-par with 8+ IMO. Apps like Radar Scopea and Sky Guide will be amazing on the XSM. However, in basic non-video use.. the gap between the XSM and 8+ isnt’ that wide.

If you are into photography...
The new iPhones have an amazing camera but so does the 8+ and iOS 12 has brought improvements, even if not adverstised, IMO. When it comes to photo editing on a phone (maybe not many people do this.. I do it a LOT) the 8+ is KING. Go to an Apple store, pull up a landscape image on the XS, XSM and an 8+ and look how much more workable are of an image you get. I was very surprised. I personally load a lot of images from my real cameras onto my phone for editing.

Basically, I am on the backside of this issue. When I look at the XS and XSM I wonder if it is worth the upgrade from my 8+. From everything I have ‘analyzed’ the XSM isn’t worth it, for me. I lose photo edting space and gain screen for a few apps and videos that I don’t watch that much. The XS on the other hand gets me to a smaller profile, which I have been wanting but costs me photo editing space/size. In the end, do I want a smaller profile phone and would I be OK moving my photo editing to my IPP.

I have to admit that there is a part of me that wants to get the XSM just because it’s so honkin’ big and that screen.. that glorious big@$$ screen. It’s tempting for sure. My pinkie, however, is on my other shoulder saying nah.
[doublepost=1537798617][/doublepost]I should add that swiping up to close applications is awesome. The interactions with the X line is WAY better than the home button IMO.

[CORRECTION - Photos on 8+ and XSM are same size. My comparison was using a 3:2 image from my Fuji camera to a 4:3 image from the iPhone]
[doublepost=1537814561][/doublepost]I am so torn in moving from the 8+ to the XSM. At this point it comes down to big or small phone in-hand. Did more testing today and can type one-handed on the XS and the XSM. Not AS easy on the XSM but can do it consistently. I wonder how much I will actually type one-handed though. I want to go smaller but that big ol’ screen...

quit living in the past!

It’s not living in the past, rather having the device that best suits your individual needs. Anyway all iPhones of past few years have been so good and so capable in some ways the choice is vast. Also I think the stigma of ‘having to have’ the latest iPhone is gone. They are all premium devices!

Can live with one or the other no problem... i have both right now and they feel the same to me exactly

The notable improvement is camera quality and screen quality and stereo sound.

In terms of speed they are equally fast so its not worth upgrading just for speed alone. Upgrade only because of the improvements.
Sorry for the off topic.
Do you see a big difference in bright daylight outdoors photos from 8 plus to Xs?
In low light, studying the sample photos posted, I think that Xs is way better.

I can’t for the life of me see why anyone would want their 8 Plus back, unless there’s some extreme aversion to Touch ID or something. The Max is basically the same size with a much bigger screen. What does the 8 Plus offer that the Max doesn’t?
No flickering and les headaches?:)
More mature product?

I’m typing this on a new product red 8+. It really hurt to let my max go, but the constant headaches aren’t worth it. I am a guy who gets a headache once every few years, but the max gave me one within 5 minutes of use. Incredible phone, but it just won’t work for me.

No. I am glad my sister talked me into buying the Xs Max. It has been a bit of a PITA to get the device manager on for work today, but I won't go back.

Sounds like, you, me and tonybarnaby are the few in this forum that have this problem. I haven’t returned mine but still use my 8 Plus.

Hope I will get to upgrade it to a headache-fee phone next year.

If the screen was not giving headaches it would have been the best phone to date.

I’ve seen a lot more than just us with the issue. Off hand I’d say at least a dozen. That’s a decent amount, since there don’t appear to be thousands of active posters on here. You know it’s an issue when you read stories online about people getting headaches from their X. Here’s hoping 2019 is better.

Its not true tone. Unfortunately some of the Max's have a screen issue. Mine has a yellow tint with true tone and night shift off. I've ordered another one and hopefully it doesn't have this issue. If it does, I'll just deal with it I guess.

How did it go?
Did your replacement also exhibit yellow tint?

It's a big change from Touch ID to Face ID, give it few days to change the habit.
I wear glasses and for me it didn’t work without my glasses even though in the set up I did one with and one without. I see you have glasses on your Memoji - any tips?

I don’t have the Max right now as it was returned due to the cellular connectivity issues but hopefully will get another when Apple fixes the problem.

I wonder how wide spread the problems with Face ID are? I think it works flawlessly for most, but it comes up too often to be some bug.

I’ve never had problems with Face ID with my X, after using it for a year. Max seems to work just as good (but faster) than the X.

The only times it fails to unlock is if it’s almost litch black.

A week in and I am getting used to the form factor of the XS Max. It doesn’t feel as ‘long’ anymore but I still notice the weight increases over the 8+
My eyes are adjusting to the screen and it is glorious. Browsing is definitely a better experience.

I do notice that cellular connectivity is down to the point we’re some calls are dropping when I think the 8+ would have clung on.

Also yesterday the top speaker cut out for media and music and took a reboot to get it working again. Notice the issue on a couple of posts. Hope it’s software rather than hardware.

I still do miss Touch ID which I rate a notch above Face ID for my own personal use.

Overall the XS Max is a better phone but I could easily go back to an 8+ and not feel hard done by.

nobody here has the reception issues that are being talked about on another thread?

I seem to have a new carrier update installed. I noticed that my bars increased. While at a friends house, I was able to use my phone, ATT, where last Monday I wasn’t.

Does apple have the ability to push small updates, for instance while plugged in overnight and performing backups?

WiFi reception is also better

TouchID is driving me crazy on my iPad 10.5. Hope Apple fixes with FaceID soon!

I stopped using mine.

Touch ID is extremely irritating when one gets accustomed to Face ID. I caught myself staring blankly at the screen a couple of times waiting for it to unlock or preform a biometric function in an app.

The best way to use FaceID is use without glasses for the first time during the setup process (FaceID) and then the FaceID will learn your face pattern from time to time.

I've got an iPhone X but no issue for the FaceID - even I wear three types of the glasses and without glasses from time to time.

The ideal solution is to have both! The Touch ID working through the glass so the X form factor is retained.

Touch ID through the glass isn’t going to happen.

Apple will adopt facial recognition across all their platforms. Apple is more interested in a seamless experience between devices; phone iPad and computer.
