Your probably right.....still a shame Touch ID through the glass never happened

Reply then you need to take it back to Apple and ask what is wrong. My FaceID works with or with out my glas and even sunglasses without hesitation.
I actually did return it due to the connectivity issues which were much more of a problem for me than the Face ID. I am just curious about the Face ID with glasses, as I’m hopeful to get another Max once the other issue has been resolved (hopefully soon)!

The only reason I can think of to want my 8 Plus back is that my last 8 months of test messages and call history are on it, and I need that stuff on my Max before turning the 8 Plus over to my wife. The 8 plus is a really good phone, BTW - and I enjoyed using it a great deal, but the Max is so far being the phone I want it to be - save for some of my old stuff being on the 8.

I'm not having any of the issues described by others, be it Face ID or connectivity problems. The Face ID is a real revelation, especially in contrast to the touch ID (which my fingerprints have issues with from being roughed up doing work). The touch ID works great on 8 if I use a pinky/ring but if I use thumb/index my roughed up fingerprints don't convey as well as ideal. I'll just look at my Max overhead while it charges and it pops open. I figure if anything the ugly face will break it first....:D....but Apple seemed to do it just fine.

Funny any saying the xx max is harder to handle than the plus considering the physical size of the max is smaller than the plus. More screen tho I guess.

I had a 6S Plus and then a 7 Plus before buying the X last year. I was looking forward to a bigger phone so this year I picked up a XS Max and used it for the last a week. It was just too difficult to handle with one hand. Even though the size is nearly the same as a Plus phone it's harder to reach to the top of the screen for notifications and control center. It was also considerably heavier than my 7 Plus. To its credit the XS Max has an amazing display and my battery life was fantastic. Those benefits could not outweigh the discomfort I had in day to day use, it was just a bit too much for me. On Friday I took my XS Max back to Best Buy and exchanged mine for a regular XS. I'm happy I made the change. I've learned that the 5.8 inch is about the perfect size for me. It's also good to know that the XS has the same amount of ram and the same camera system as the Max, whereas the Plus phones of the past were superior in those areas.

The Max has been in the market for a few weeks. The plus has been out for years. When it was first released people griped over the size.
It will take a while for people to adjust.

Just this weekend I figured out how to type on my plus using one hand.

Nine days into my Max and while it’s a fantastic phone ....was it financially worth it over the 8 plus?.....probably not.

Money aside, I love screen and crispness of the whole thing. Camera is improved ...but that’s about the lot for me.

My gripe is that I still prefer Touch ID and the biggest one for me is the weight. The Max just feels so much heavier than the 8 Plus :/

If I still had my 8 Plus I would almost certainly return XS Max and be content with the Plus a in both usability and cost. As I traded the Plus it adds a layer of complexity to my end decision, which will have to be made soon!

The only annoyance I have with the max is control center. Being a habitual user of it and left handed has made this transition less then optimal. I wish there was some form of a 3D touch drag combo instead of that one corner up in the top right... (Yes I have reachability on) But I'm sure I'll just get use to it over time.I thought the notch was gonna bother me but that hasn't even happened yet

went from 7plus to XSM.

likes:
- beautiful screen
- face id works for the most part quite well (especially with os12, i rarely need to type in passwords now)
- speedy/snappy app launches, etc
- extra ram means safari pages don't reload, more apple news articles preload, etc
- nice camera although haven't played with it much yet
- physical size essentially the same (i used a case that was slimmer/lighter so next weight change in my hand was the same)

dislikes:
- without touch id, i forget which way is up -- i think that's half the benefit of the "notch"
- should've come with upsized charger (but i used a multi-port charger that charges my MacBook and iphones)
- agree reaching the "top" of the screen no longer within easy rich.
- also not sure if it's a XSM or os12 thing but miss having %battery life shown instead of just icon

considering taking advantage of e-sim and possibly integrating personal and work phones

the % is a X thing unfortunately... you can swipe down for control center and see the percent but as far as I know can’t have it as the older iPhones

Face ID on the Max works much better than the X did.

Why do you believe that? From my understanding, Face ID is _slightly_ faster when unlocking on the iPhone XS, but many are saying it’s fairly comparable in terms of what the 2017 X was in accuracy.

Isn't it possible to do a full backup / restore using iTunes on a Mac?

You should have upgraded to the XS and not Max. Max is an awkward device to use.

In terms of control centre usage and general weight of device I would agree. But the screen, especially in terms of watching video, feels much smaller on an XS compared to a Plus device.

I haven’t done anything with my 7 Plus just in case I wanted to return my Xs Max. I picked up my 7 Plus yesterday and I can honestly say I miss the bezels and the home button. I didn’t think I would but playing with it for a few minutes has me thinking of returning my Xs Max. Sounds strange because I love the Xs Max phone and the screen. My old 7 Plus feels more comfortable and easier to use.

I just replaced an x with an 8+ after trying the devices out in store. For me the 8+ is the perfect phone. 7+ isn’t far behind but I like True Tone. Max is too awkward to use and I don’t like the oled screens. “But it has reachability” yeah but I don’t use it

I believe the problem with the Xs Max is that it is way too tall for its width. If it was wider, that would be ideal. But considering the current width, I believe my 8 Plus's height was the perfect combo.

I've given my 8 Plus to my boyfriend and I look at it sometimes and I never get the feeling that it is small and outdated, like I always used to get whenever I looked at older phones.

Each time I hold it or look at it, I tend to think that the 8 Plus size is much more comfortable in hand, also I much prefer the LCD colors...

You’ve mentioned the weight several times now. It’s literally 6 grams heavier. That’s roughly 6 paper clips or slightly more than a nickel.

My guess is that it’s mostly in your mind. You know it’s heavier, so it therefore feels much heavier to you.

I am seeing the same thing. Face ID took a bit longer on the X for me. With the Max, it's been pretty much invisible.
