So my iPhone 4 is unlocked but I never got my congrats message in iTunes. Why??? I popped a tmobile sim card and it works! I'm just wondering why I'm not getting the message from iTunes. So strange.

Looks like AT&T is steadily plugging all the holes. The link posted in the previous pages of this thread is no longer available for chat. Now you will have to actually log in to your account to chat and chat screen says that if you are trying to get your iPhone unlocked, you will have to provide proof of purchase.

I just want confirmation it's unlocked. So not getting a message is commonplace then?

The ultimate confirmation is iTunes, there is nothing else that matters. Also you will probably get the email in less than a week.

I think I know why I never got my congrats message from iTunes. My iPhone 4 was always factory unlocked even tho I bought with contract. My iPhone 4 model number is MC536LL. I googled it and some people experienced unlocked capabilities from this model number. Factory unlocked iPhones don't get messages on congrats right???

It's unlocked even tho I not get message. Do unlocked iPhones bypass the congrats?

That's what I figured, if you buy a factory unlocked iphone, you won't get the message. This happened to me so I went to the Apple store and asked. They ran my serial number on my 4S and told me that it was indeed unlocked. But only way to find out for sure is getting a different GSM sim card and testing it out.

I believe that you only get the message if the carrier unlocks the iphone that was locked before.

I didn't know that, I thought all iPhones would show the congratulations message.

Apparently this site can tell you if it is unlocked also? Not really sure how they can tell.

Yes, the site you gave can tell if it is unlocked or not. I don't know how but it's cool. I entered my unlocked iPhone 4 imei, and few minutes later, the result came out and said it was unlocked. I also entered my iPhone 4S (which I sold to compensate for my unlocked iPhone 4S), which told me it is locked. So i think it is pretty accurate. I would say this is useful if you are buying from ebay, CL or other place so you know whether you purchased the iphone locked or unlocked.

That's so crazy bc I didnt pay or an unlocked iPhone. It was bought in a contract. I just never tried to put a non AT&T sim in. I chatted with AT&T online just to see if they would unlock it but they never responded so I restored iPhone byway to see if it was unlocked. No congrats message but it activated on a tmobile sim and worked. I had no idea I have a factory unlock iPhone.

Okay, finally my brother (who is also on my account) got through to put in my request for both our phones, an iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s. Phones were verified and he got transferred to another department that apparently submits the requests, which went fine. My brother was asked to wait for the e-mail and he got one e-mail with instructions which he forwarded to me. Note that he was not provided any case numbers.

He's out and about at the moment and he hasn't been able to restore and verify the unlock on his iPhone 4 but I checked my iPhone 4s and did not get the 'Congratulations' message after restoring. Tried a different SIM and got the 'Invalid SIM' error.

Those who have been unlocked successfully:
1. Does AT&T send a separate e-mail other than the one with the instructions?
2. Do they send a separate e-mail for each device if more than 1 request was put in during the same phone call?
3. I'm still running iOS 5.0.1 on my iPhone 4s. Do I have to update to iOS 5.1 before doing the backup and restore?

Thanks.

1. AT&T sends out an e-mail telling you the instructions like "Completing Your Authorized unlock iphone" In the message it basically tells me that I was eligible for an unlock and gave me the instructions what to do. I believe the livechat site provided on page 5 no longer works but I used that to request an unlock. While I was chatting, they sent that e-mail, and told me to wait 3 hours and then back up and restore.

2. They should send out a separate e-mail for each device that was requested for an unlock. So your brother who requested the unlock should receive 2 separate e-mail.

3. Since the current iOS is 5.1, you will lose the 5.0.1 if you restore, unless you want to keep 5.0.1 you can find a way to maintain 5.0.1 update unless you have the 5.0.1 ipsw file on your computer, if you are on PC, hold shift I believe, for Macs, I believe it's command? I do not know but someone can clarify that. And find your 5.0.1 ipsw file.

Is your iPhone 4S is still under contract (as in your line)? Or did you buy it off-contract. Call them again. If you purchased under contract, they won't unlock it unless you pay ETF, or have fulfilled the contact and must be in good standing. I've heard that there is a loophole which is to take your iPhone 4S and get it replaced by Apple then call AT&T and request an unlock.

So if I owe AT&T money on two accounts in which I simply had to quit paying on back in December/January and sold the iPhones, the people who bought those iPhones can't get them unlocked without a proof of purchase?

I know I can't unlock my 3GS which will be contract free next month due to those accounts but I really don't care.

And to those wondering why I had to quit paying the accounts, my car broke down in October. I spent $700 on repairs in October. It broke down again in December and spent another $500 on repairs. Broke down again in February and gave the car away to a friend. Used my tax refund to buy another one. Still hurting a bit but getting better. I've done with out my DirecTV, trash service and a few other non essentials to get back on track.

I tried giving away those two accounts for free on the forums several months back but had no takers even with unlimited data on both.

Unlock was successful for me but initially, I guess I was just dumb and kept restoring my backed up data rather than restoring iOS. I finally restored iOS from 5.0.1 to 5.1 and received the 'Congratulations!' screen.

My brother followed the same steps as me to restore iOS 5.1 on his iPhone 4 but has not received the 'congratulations' screen after a couple of tries. He currently does not have a non AT&T SIM to verify the unlock and imei.info has not been able to confirm for a few hours now. Hopefully we'll know soon.

Unless you sell the phone and they take it to the apple store to get it replaced, they can then request an unlock to the iphone.

Only way to find out is take out the gevey out of the sim card and put in a sim card and see if it works, if it doesn't then it is locked, if it does then it is unlocked.

I believe if you have the right jailbreaking tool, you can still preserve at 5.0.1, if you have the 5.0.1 ipsw file and an shsh blob. (Honestly I don't know anything about this but i'm sure if you create another post or someone can help clarity that).

So is it official that no more unlocking over chat? anyone got their iphone unlocked over chat when the message say that, "only unlock for AT&T customers"?

Correct. You can still get your iPhone unlocked if you're a non-AT&T customer. You just need to call CS and tell them that you're a non-AT&T customer looking to unlock your iPhone. The process isn't as instant as the business chat was but I've gotten it done in less than 4-5 days. Definitely not bad at all for a non-AT&T customer to get service from AT&T. They were very enthusiast about helping me and everything went smoothly.
