how long do imei.info take to tell whether its locked or not? did u try restoring or activating it again/??

Imei.info took about 12 hours to complete the inquiry. After that I used the SAM app to deactivate my iPhone. I launched iTunes, and as soon as I plugged in my iPhone I got the "Congratulations, you just activated & unlocked" message. I unplugged and went back to using my iPhone as normal. Push notifications, iMessage, & visual voicemail all work fine.

If it is written as Sim Locked: Yes, it means it is locked. If it said Sim Locked: No, then it is unlocked.

Regardless, if you requested an unlock and it was approved, it will go on Apple's server and it will say Sim Lock: No on that site. I unlocked my iPhone 4, and on the site it says Sim Lock: No. As for my iPhone 4S, which is locked and I sold it after I got the unlocked iPhone 4S from the apple store, says Sim Locked: Yes. Hope this helps.

Hmm, does this website update the IMEI status periodically? Or do I have to put in the same IMEI again to recheck?

Fingers crossed!

I tried setting up an account at the AT&T website so as to use the text based live help but this proved impossible as I do not have any accounts with them to link the online account to, so I could never get into the online help system! I called them via skype (this confused them a bit but was fine) so I could still call for free from the UK +1 800 335 4685

The automatic phone system is a bit confusing, choose the iphone unlock option and then the 'speak to a person' option.

I spoke to a very helpful call center worker. She took a few details, name and email address (they wanted a phone number but I told them I didn't have one until the phone was unlocked) and the IMEI number. She checked the number and told me I would receive an email from them on the 7th May (about 10 days) Looking forward to it :)

WT...? My phone is fully working!!!

After the above post I thought I might as well get a head start on my hopefully soon to be working iPhone, so I updated to iOS 5.1 through iTunes. I'd already updated to 5.0.1 and at that time I'd checked, just in case the jailbreak I'd used somehow included a carrier unlock. It was a while back but as far as I remember I put my sim card in but no joy. I'd certainly tried this on previous occasions. When I upgraded today there was a new 'setup' that ran automatically when the phone rebooted. I required a Sim to be in the phone to 'authorise' it. I thought I was going to have a problem and would not even be able to use it as an iPod (as I'd been doing), until the unlock came through (see previous post). I thought I'd try putting in my SIM on the off chance, and not only did it go to the regular menu screen, but it recognised the SIM! I've turned off WIFI and used the internet and I've made a test call!!!

IMIE.info says
model: iPhone 3GS 16GB Black
version: 5.1
serial: I've removed this
mac: And this
warranty coverage: Out of Warranty
warranty period: 2009-07-31 /
purchase country: United Kingdom
activated: yes
carrier: O2 United Kingdom
SIM locked: yes

I am currently using it with O2, but AFAIK it was locked to AT&T in the USA (where it was purchased), and the response I got from them when I called seemed to confirm this

Surely AT&T did not unlock the phone in the short time between me calling them and my upgrading the OS (I had assumed there were more steps before the unlock was finished anyway). No complaints and I'm very happy, just a bit confused :)

Are AT&T unlocking without being asked? Surely they did not unlock the phone in the short time between me calling them and my upgrading the OS (I had assumed there were more steps before the unlock was finished anyway). No complaints and I'm very happy, just a bit confused :)

Some unlocks are extremely quick. My brother put in a request for his iPhone 4 & my iPhone 4s. The rep told him to wait for an e-mail which could take about 30 minutes but the e-mail arrived within 10 minutes, at which time I believe the unlock request was approved for both our phones.

I updated to 5.1 a few hours later and got the "Congratulations!" message but my brother tried twice and no "Congratulations!" message. However, imei.info confirmed that both our phones are unlocked. We should both be getting our T-mobile SIM's today or tomorrow to see if our phones work on t-mobile although we don't plan to switch to t-mobile.

Back when the chat link was still active, I got 2 different phones unlocked on different occasions. Each were unlocked instantly, I received the email right after chatting!

That's the wired thing, there has been no email (which they said would take 10 days anyway).

IMIE seems to think it's locked to O2 in the UK, but when I tried to get O2 to unlock it 6 months or so ago, they said they could not (presumably as the lock was with AT&T though my boss, who gave me the phone, is not 100% sure). UK phone companies routinely unlock phones when the contract expires, it's not a problem over here. IMIE seems to have picked up the current information, including the fact that I'd just updated it to 5.1.

Odd, but like I said, I'm happy!

So strange. I said in earlier post that I never got my congrats message from iTunes about iPhone 4 unlock but the phone was already unlocked anyway. Today I restored and I got the message about unlock from iTunes. The message comes later I guess....

I was able to get my 4S unlocked. The rep said May 3 for the date. I checked the site and it said it was unlocked so I tried it in iTunes and it gave me the congratulations screen. Still haven't received the email.

Did a little test and came to the obvious conclusion:
They are indefinitely prioritizing AT&T customers

Yesterday I submitted a case for my iPhone through the backdoor chat, got my case number

Today I submitted a case for the same iPhone through the AT&T website, got my case number, and 5 hours later I got the email! imei.info also says it is now unlocked.

After the request gets processed, do you have to restore the phone in itunes for the unlock to take effect?

Do you just connect the phone to itunes for a second like what you do with a brand new phone to activate it?
Or do you have to do a actual restore?

Yeah, ater the request gets processed, you'll have to connect your phone and restore it. An actual restore.

I think it depends on the rep.
I did 3 unlocks using my regural AT&T account via chat.
The 1st one went though within minutes I got off and the email came in right away.
The other 2 I had to wait about 5-6 days but no big deal. All got unlocked in the end.

okie dokie i will give it a try with my bro's AT&T account! i just tried chatting with a rep without an account! the rep didnt even listen and said you need to call at the help line in order to unlock the iPhone

Not necessarily. If the phone is jailbroken, he could just deactivate it via SAM or redsn0w, and then connect to iTunes.

Thanks guys.
It's a AT&T iphone4 using Gevey unlock SIM. No JB or anything.

The reason I am asking is that, I never had a flawless experience with restore. I had to do it few times when I got the phone replaced under warranty, but it always missed some info when I restored the backup to new phones. Most info was there, but some apps always lost data.

therefore, I don't mind calling them and putting in the request. but if i must go through a actual restore, i probably just save the trouble and wait until the new iphone (assume factory unlocked) comes out.
