I don't get the AT&T unlock rules. I understand what they are, but not why.

I am under contract. I'll be traveling to the UK for 2 weeks in June. If I use a bunch of data and make a bunch of calls and send a bunch of texts, it would be cheaper for me to pay the ETF, get my phone unlocked, and buy a cheapo UK PAYG SIM than it would be to pay AT&T's silly international roaming charges.

And by that logic, it would be cheaper for me to just switch to Verizon, then have Verizon unlock my phone, hassle free, for any future traveling.

I called AT&T and pointed out that by refusing to unlock my phone while under contract, they are essentially telling me they'd rather I take my business elsewhere.

"Sorry, we can't unlock your phone while you're under contract. Those are the rules."

"But if you unlock my phone now, I'm still under contract. I haven't gone over my minutes since 2007. I have unlimited data and unlimited texts. Unlocking my phone now will not change what I am paying you monthly for the duration of my contract. What are you afraid of? It will be cheaper for me to pay the ETF and switch to Verizon than to pay your international rates for 2 weeks abroad. If I do that, we have no relationship at all, never mind a relationship where you're scared of unlocking my phone in-contract. Is that what you want?"

The CSR had no answer for that.

Do they really think I'm going to pay $100 for 200mb of data overseas, or $1/min for voice? I'll get a Gevey SIM before I do that.

I feel you. You can go back and read my previous posts on this topic.

Btw be careful, try-hard-core AT&T fan boys are on the hunt here. They will pick a single sentence in a 200 sentence post and bite you on that lol.

Easy.

AT&T ?

Fail.

can anyone help me unlocking an iphone? please!! can some one tell me what is there are two lines to one account this means that 5 iPhones/account or what?

Not sure if this has been asked before, but I currently have 2 lines on my account in which one is not in contract that has an iphone 4. I just got that phone unlocked.

Would it be possible to switch out the sim cards on the phones, so that my 4S which is on the other line under contract is now on the line that's not in contract, and then request for the 4S to be unlocked?

you can give a try!

Well I will once I get a hold of the other phone, but just wanted to put it out there to see if anyone's tried and if it's even worth attempting.

frankly speaking you dont even need to put the SIM in it! u can give a try like this!!

First time I tried to have AT&T unlock my iPhone 4 the lady said I wasn't eligible because even though the phone was no longer on my contract (I upgraded to the 4S), it hadn't been a whole two years since I first purchased it so it wasn't technically off contract. A few weeks passed and then I called again this past Tuesday. Spoke to a guy who verified my IMEI and said he was transferring me to a tech to handle the unlock. I thought for certain the tech was going to say the same thing as the lady I spoke to a few weeks ago, but she ended up unlocking the phone and sending me the email to backup and restore.

Any idea if someone has already done this but my iPhone is getting replaced by Apple most likely, would having a new IMEI number have it show up as being able to be unlocked? I bought my phone on-contract a few months ago.

can you explain what did you do?

Well that's true,
the only things that you need to unlock your AT&T iphone are:
- Your full name
- The number that's been issued for the iphone, which you need to unlock.
- IMEI

that's all..

I was an AT&T customer when it was Cingular. My brother in law cancelled his iPHone 4 AT&T 7 months into his 2 year contract and went with Sprint. I bought his iPhone 4 and was able to get it unlocked (not being a current AT&T customer). The first AT&T Rep told me that it was not eligible because my brother in law did not pay the ETF. I called back that same night and a gal gave me a case number and was got it unlocked two weeks later. I started having problems with the home button last month and Apple replaced it with an unlocked iPhone (since it was still under warranty and the unlock was TRUE).

Apple will replace it with another unlocked iPhone. Make sure you mention that to the rep who is helping you. They checked to make sure the unlock was true on that iPhone and they will assist you with restoring your iPhone. They even helped me with the settings for TMobile. Good Luck.

My iphone got unlocked and it was bought from eBay but it was replaced by AppleCare don't know if that made a difference or not..
Also you don't have to restore. I simply put in a tmobile sim and plugged it into iTunes and it reactivated and unlocked..

can you explain what did you do?

Dude if you check my previous posts on this topic, I have kept on trying for a month to have it unlocked. I even paid on eBay to get it unlocked but the seller said they closed the servers or something like that and had to refund me. So the only way to get it unlocked was through AT&T...

Every time on the phone I was given a Case number but when the time was due they would tell me that they considered my request and that I'm not eligible for unlock. So I would go on the live chat to challenge it and they would tell me that I need to be an active member, or that it got denied because of security restrictions on the device or that I needed a proof of purchase.

I've sent them my eBay and Paypal links and transaction ID's which they refused, apparently they were not AT&T authorised resellers and that I had to find the original owner to get it unlocked or return the phone to him and give feedback and crap like that.

I just kept on going to live chat almost everyday and I always met new reps which all rejected my case until last night. I just kept on talking with a CSR and he would just deny my case but this time, he was taking almost 5 minutes every time to answer to my each question.

So I felt that he was actually paying attention and this time I was putting my point across. At the end I didn't achieve much but I felt that something was going on.

Immediately I wrote another mail to AT&T and this time I just thought of sending them my CHECKMEND report for the device. It showed that nothing was wrong with my phone, no contract or insurance issues, not reported lost or stolen and what not.

However they also refused it saying "security restrictions on the devices history" etc.

I then went on imei.info site like always and this time it said locked:no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so the point is you need to find a CSR who would actually listen to you. Although he couldn't help, I believe it was him who got my iPhone unlocked and not the Checkmend mail. He told me no because of procedures and policies but I'm sure it was him who who got it unlocked.

In this topic as well as on Spanish forums I have seen many people getting their iPhones unlocked without denial and no questions asked. So you really need luck and you need to talk serious when you find a rep whos willing to listen.

There seem to be more people getting their iPhone's unlocked now, we are not AT&T customers. So may be they're gone softer now. Perhaps no more overwhelming requests...

IMO, they are just bias. Lack of management and planning. No control over the whole unlocking process and they are discriminating between customers or "non-AT&T customers"...

Keep trying.

Good luck.

Congrats. Now you can use your iPhone, enjoy.

Thank you so much dude but trust me, from now on I hear about AT&T, I'll go hopeless.

I mean I don;t know why but all this hassle just left me with no choice but to go stubborn and keep on creeping them to get it unlocked. I mean my friends got theirs done but they just kept on denying mine beucase of retarded and unexplained reasons.

Until last night. So there you go...It wasn''t AT&T, it was my pure luck that got it unlocked.

Honestly, a company like AT&T just failed to run this project. Seriously lack of decision making and untimed policies. They just sacrificed "non-AT&T customers" to cope with the overwhelming requests. Just bias. Nothing else to it.

I just wish the best for others who still are fighting to get their devices unlocked.

Oh I just want to go on holiday lol. Look what AT&T put me through to lol. Forget £400 device but all that I had to go through...ohh forget it...

AT&T?

OMG! What a fail!!!

I sent an email with the phone number and imei, and they replyied that i need to verify the account, how do i "verify" the account?

I've purchased a phone from individuals off of Craigslist. AT&T was kind enough to unlock it for me so that I could use it internationally.

I just found that the number of the ATT sim is inactive!. What can i do? Should i say this to ATT? And will they unlock my iphone?

Here in NYC there are stores advertising on Craigslist.org that they factory unlock iPhones. They charge anywhere from 70-150. I might try this route since ATT is giving me a hard time.

I have an old (inactive) SIM in my iPhone 4, and I had no trouble getting it unlocked. I plan on using it with a Vodafone SIM in Europe this summer. After that, I will give it to my wife when her 3GS dies. It's nice having an unlocked phone to use overseas. I don't plan on making very many phone calls, but the data plan will be VERY useful during our vacation.
