Sometimes you wont get the unlocked message on itunes but your phone will still get officially unlocked.
Try an imei check website or a different carriers sim to verify.

taariqmajid1@hotmail.com thanks

So I dialed *639# and it said I can upgrade. Does that mean I can now unlock my iPhone 4? Or is this just an early upgrade but my contract is not over?

You will be able to unlock the old iphone once you upgrade and sign a new contract with a new device.
Unless the full 24 months are up from the date you bought your i4.

got my old iphone 4 unlocked. I had to go finagle a tmobile micro sim from a nice tmo employee.

Interesting thing is that i went through the steps in itunes, but never received the "congratulations" screen. It was however unlocked and i was able to make test calls.

But i wanted to take a pic of the congrats screen and post it up on ebay, so i decided to try and restore one more time, and bam. Got the congrats message.

thanks at&t :D

OK this thread has been very helpful. I have 3 AT&T iPhones ((2)4 & (1)4s), and I will be switching service to Verizon and porting the #s when the iPhone5 is released.

The two iPhone 4 are past 24 month contract and I had them unlocked by AT&T customer service today. It took awhile as one had been swapped out by APple under warranty so the IMEI did not match. Finally I got on with a manager and it got done, so those two are all set for sale once the new phones arrive.

The 4S is still under contract (I will be paying a partial ETF on that line). What is the correct process for getting that phone unlocked without threatening the # port? I am concerned if I try to unlock after I cancel and port, AT&T will refuse to do so as it is a non active account. However I am also concerned about paying the ETF and unlocking before porting as I might risk losing the #.

Thanks in advance!

As long as you're a past customer that paid the ETF they will unlock it.
Keep your receipt and have your old account number ready.
Once you pay the ETF then you can request the unlock.

Question: When I order the new iPhone off Apple's website in a few weeks and I agree to all the terms and conditions, does that mean I'm able to then unlock my current iPhone 4S?

I'm basically asking, once I upgrade and place my order, can i then call AT&T to unlock or do I have to wait the few weeks for my new phone to activate to unlock the old one...?

You have to call AT&T to unlock your old one if you sign a new contract with a new device.
Your new device has to be used and activated on your account before you attempt to unlock it.

Still having trouble getting my wife's iPhone 4S unlocked.
However, I was able to call AT&T and get an unlock code on my Samsung Note.
I just bought it a month or so ago under contract.

Doesn't make sense to make it so difficult to unlock the iPhone when other phones don't get harrassed.

Is it AT&T's fault or Apple?

It's AT&T.
They don't want their subsidized phones used on other carriers.
Tmobile has tons of iPhone users.

Why do you need a receipt? I didn't.
AT&T knows whether your contract is fulfilled or not without a receipt.
They also know whether that UDID is being used on your account without a receipt.
In fact, with the number of AppleCare and Squaretrade replacements, the percentage of people with the same phone 2-years later that they walked out of the store with has got to be pretty small.

I've had my AT&T iPhone 4 for over two years so I am off contract at this point. Just ordered the 5 on Verizon. I want to unlock my 4 so that I can give to my parents to use on T-Mobile. Does it matter if I unlock now or wait until after I port my number over to the new phone? I don't want to do the whole backup and reinstall thing on my current phone since I'm only going to be using it for another few weeks and reloading all my music seems like a waste of time. Can I put in the unlock order through AT&T and then just not do my portion (ie. plugging into iTunes) until after I get my new iPhone 5?

I know AT&T will unlock for former customers but I figured doing it as a current customer might be easier...

Yes, I'd do it now.
And since you're out of contract it should be no prob.
