The only thing that makes me not too interested is the fact that I think most apps will not be able to take advantage of the retina display. Netflix, NBC player and ABC player will not even come close to streaming in that high of a resolution. I think the iPad 2 resolution is fine for those types of things.

As far as games go, I am a little disillusioned by the freemium take over that has been happening since about January of last year and the drop in quality of games that have come since then. I am however looking forward to infinity blade 3, real racing 3 and hopefully some decent games from gameloft.

The only immediate benefit I see from the retina display will be for reading websites and catching up on news. The hd display will make it less straining on the eyes.

um, the highest resolution ever released on a tablet is good enough for me. Everything you do on the iPad involves looking at the screen.

screen = killer feature

Maybe I'm missing something but what other company makes a tablet with a 2048 by 1536 resolution?

LTE is 'catch up', yes, but I don't think you fully grasp what a huge deal, having a screen with that high a resolution really is, on. 9.7" screen.
In portrait orientation, at a 1:1 ratio, even the biggest Cinema Display can't show it fully, whilst the 27" iMac can't show it fully at all!

I know what you're saying, and maybe "catch up" were the wrong words to use. The fact is though, Samsung are likely to release a similar display very soon after the iPad__ releases (if they haven't already - frankly I wouldn't be surprised if they are just waiting for the iPad __ to be announced so they can make sure their spec wanking can continue). This is completely different to the iPhone 4 where it took a year before it had competition.

@BergerFan cool link!

If they do provide the retina display, then that alone makes this a bigger update than iPad 2... for me. To me, as long as the processor keeps up appropriately, improved resolution is the biggest possible feature. The only feature in a tablet / phone that comes close is a dramatic improvement in design.. thinner, lighter. That is what I missed most by not getting the iPad 2 and hanging out with my day 1 iPad 1.

Not too excited. Depends on the final product. Retina not a must have for me.

I am more interested in web pages loading even faster, automatically downloading podcasts, keyboard freezing less when I enter a new app, built in physical keyboard, ....

Software and usAbility improvements much of it.

New camera ...don't care much about unless you could fold iPad in half.

Siri mostly a gimmick. Best use for it probably in the car and for me would mean buying the LTE model.

I wish it had an sd card slot so you could easily load photos from your camera.

Overall though I mostly use mine as a surfing machine including email.

I don't even use for photos as coordinating them with my wife's MBP is a pain now that I don't tether the iPad.

I am not too excited over it. I'd be a nice upgrade, but I tend to get way more excited for the iPhones, since I ALWAYS have that with me. My iPad will be home, and I'll use it when needed.

I'll buy it just for the retina display. The rest is just added bonus. But I hope they add 128 GB as well that way I won't have to upgrade next year

But why? Not even for a better battery life? Retina display isn't anything special.

Don't know if I'm excited yet. Retina to me is just a gimmick like it was on the iphone, but I'm a sucker for gimmicks I suppose because I buy every single generation ipad and iphone, sigh. Siri is junk, I regret upgrading my iphone4 to a 4s. What would get me excited would be a higher dpi touch sensor and really just updating iOS into the modern world.

Bah I say this every year and sure enough the next cycle comes around and I'm the first one with my credit card out.

To you, maybe.

To almost every single person I know who has an iPhone 4/4S and an iPad...it is THE most coveted upgrade. I've heard "I love my iPad but I wish it had a screen like my phone" so many times it's untrue.

I'm not disagreeing with you for the sake of it - I'm firmly in the category of 4->4S being minor-upgrade-meh, so I'm not the kind of person who HAS to upgrade every time.

Well, Apple have to call it something. Nokia has their 'Clear Black Display', for example.
If you place an iPhone 3GS next to an iPhone 4S, there's no way anyone can come away with the idea that the Retina Display is a gimmick.
The same thing will happen with the next iPad's display.

I never saw what the big deal was between the 3gs screen versus the 4s screen personally. Webpages looked a tiny bit sharper if I put my eye all the way next to the screen, but otherwise meh. I'm hoping that the retina on the ipad is more noticeable due to its larger size and the type of applications I use on it. I don't really think retina is a "gimmick", of course not its a higher resolution and a positive hardware change, it's just not something that ever really wowed me or made me feel like I had to upgrade.

Not too excited at all, Sold my IPad 2 and purchased an 11 inch Mac Book Air and Apple Thunderbolt Monitor instead of the new iPad.

I needed a real computer and felt this was the was to go.

One problem is that it's always hard to go back to the old one. After using the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S for a while, I could easily see the areas where iPad 1 and iPhone 4 was slowing down which I wouldn't have noticed before, and sometimes it was annoying. Ditto for looking into the 3GS screen after the Retina display. First world problems.

Me.

I really don't need the Retina screen on a tablet. IMO, iPad 2 is already HD and this is just ultra-HD or something. I understand a need for the Retina display on a small screen like the iPhone's, but for the iPad this is more than enough.

Siri and LTE don't work in my country, so I could care less about that.

Those are the reasons i'm sticking with my iPad 2 and waiting for the iPad 4. That one will have a bump strong enough in speed to warrant an upgrade AND hopefully a pressure sensitive screen (which would be great for me as I use my iPad for drawing).

I agree with the OP and think this is a good thing- Apple is giving their products more than a 1 year life-cycle.

Any reasonable person knows that an iPad or an iPhone or an iPod can last several years. I've had the same MBP for 4 years and besides upping the HDD storage and software upgrades, had no issues whatsoever. It's a great product that holds it's own.

Major feature upgrades happened in the first few iterations of the iPhone because it was an entirely new product - a "consumer-minded" smartphone. before the iPhone, no one outside an office would have thought "I want a smartphone" because they were always associated with work. the iPhone made smartphones and portable content consumption and creation fun.

I owned an iPhone 3GS. I tried other Android and BB devices off and on, but after 2 years, I upgraded to the iPhone 4S because after those 2 years there were major changes- Processor, screen, Siri, battery life to name a few.

In that same train of thought, I skipped the initial iPad, but got the iPad 2. I won't be buying whatever comes out tomorrow regardless. My iPad 2 serves my needs perfectly and there won't be a noticable difference in my day-to-day use until iPad 4.

The only company that has the same consistency is Amazon with their Kindles (obviously not counting the Kindle Fire). I've had my Kindle since they cost $350 and never had the need to upgrade because my software works great, gets updated, my battery still works fine, and I get a consistently good experience from the interface and the company.

This is a great thing for consumers. It means consistency. Apple already does well with that by having iOS support for devices go back as far as possible which adds features to older devices, thus extending their life-cycle. It adds immense value to the brand in a market surrounded by Android refresh cycles of 3-6 months and so many fragmented versions I've lost out. Windows Phone is consistent software wise, but the hardware is all over the place, obsoleting itself on a bi-monthly basis.

I'm not excited about it. My iPad 2 is still functioning so at this point I'm good with. I will upgrade to the iPad HD, but there's not a dire need at this point.

I hope they're getting the "Hitler's reaction to the iPad 3" videos ready!

Yah this may be true, I haven't seen a 3Gs screen since I sold it when the 4's came out. I wouldn't be surprised if I looked at it and found it ugly after all this time with the 4.

I agree dude. I think I'm more excited about the possible ATV announcement.

I'm not even sure that all the hype for the iPad 3 was even warranted. It's not like it's a new device. It's the same old, same old.

The average person would not notice a retina screen even if you told them the difference. It still wouldn't be able to play high definition videos. It won't even be better than your laptop.

The only reason I'm interested in the next iPad is because I don't believe the rumors.

So by this logic all the hype that will undoubtedly surround the iPhone 6G will not be warranted because it's "not a new device?"

And of course an average person with any sort of adequate eyesight will be able to tell the difference in the text between a 2048 X 1536 screen 9.7" and a 1024 X 768 screen 9.7". There's a huge difference between an iphone 3GS and an iPhone 4 and there will be a similar difference in this case.
