I wanted the mini for the smaller form factor and would be my first iPad, but for $100.00 more and it's the same design, processor with only touch ID added, no way, not a good deal.

I'm leaning towards the iPad mini 2nd gen refurbished or just getting the iPad Air 2 which seems better value with better screen, faster processor and touch ID.

APPLE really messed up, sales on iPad mini 3 will be low, it's probably what they wanted to do anyway and now can say they will fade out this model (don't want it to compete w/ iPhone 6+) it's a sad day for iPad mini 3

It'll sell well because we're heading into the holidays, and 3 > 2 when you're not a savvy customer. Those with larger gift budgets will buy it just because its "the new one".

Don't get me wrong, the iPad Mini 3 is better than the iPad Mini 2, just maybe not $100 better -- marketing position and the number in the name will insure it still sells.

The more I think about this after today's news....I think it's the end of the road for the iPad mini, after no change in processor or design, I seriously doubt they will make an iPad mini 4. In another year the market is going to change again and Apple will say it's not worth making an iPad mini 4.

I disagree. The best thing about the Mini 3 is that the Mini 2 is now $100 cheaper. That's the model to buy if you're interested in that form factor.

I agree with you; there really is no good reason to buy the 3. Touch ID is nice, but not a necessary thing and does nothing to improve system performance.

I am unbelievably disappointed that the iPad mini 3 did not get new screen.
The iPad mini is the perfect size for me and the iPad mini is the device I use 95% of the time. I can't use an Air because it is not portable enough. My commitments keep me away from home unless I'm sleeping, and home is the only place that I use my iPad air.
If they're not saving the new type of screen for the next upgrade in a year then I am afraid you're right this is the end of the road.
Apple, I am so pissed that you are treating the mini like a stepchild.

100% what you said. I sold my Mini Retina 3 weeks ago....egarly awaiting the Mini 3. Huge disappointment! I pre ordered the Nexus 9 instead. I'm skipping this years Mini after having owned both prior versions of the Mini.

Yes, for my other half though as she doesn't have one. So it is just worth it as she has a 5S and the lack of no Touch ID will be annoying. TBH this should have been on it last year.

Couldn't agree more and I'm in a similar situation to you.

Unfortunately I sold my Mini retina a few weeks ago in anticipation that they would give the mini a worthy upgrade this time round. So disappointed.

I could really do with a mini again, so I'm just going to pick up a 16gb Mini 2 to tide me over.

That said I don't think the mini is dead. It allows consumers to enter the Apple tablet market at a lower price point, so will also attract people who are on a lower budget. I reckon it will get the needed updates this time next year at which point I'll probably upgrade.

Really gutted about yesterday although in hindsight the signs were all there with little or no rumours about the ipad mini 3.

Definitely not. I have an iPad mini 2. The iPad mini 3 is not enough of an upgrade, IMO. That said, I'm quite disappointed to be honest.

The screen gamut was never broken. Just narrower than the Air.. And I highly doubt they would have upgraded to the Air's gamut without mentioning it.

I'd say it's fair to say that the mini and retina Mini with only a 63% color gamut when most every other premium tablet was 100% (ish) is definitely broken!

Is there even a slight distinct in performance between Ipad Air and Ipad Air 2?

Apple shouldn't even release Ipad mini in the first place. It did not steal the market from full size but it sure destroy their Ipod touch market.

You do realize that 7" tablets are useful for things than an iPod touch can't do right? Such as having a 7" screen...

The only reason I'd have and keep a mini 3 is if I receive it as a gift. If I'm purchasing it myself, it's mini 2. I entertained getting the 6 Plus when supplies get better, but I love my OG mini, form factor, and iPad apps too much to give that up now (being a producer, I can't give up Logic Remote with Logic X at all).

The mini still has a lot of value to me and many other users. It would be a shame if Apple further abandons us in the future.

Yep i do. I just think Apple should focus on making the best 9.7 Ipad instead of following the market and release a 7.9.

Ipod touch 6 with bigger screen could generate more "wow" factor than a new mini with touch id and identical spec.

Well I have had every generation of iPad so far and previously and the Air, which I sold as I wasn't using the iPad that much. I ended up missing it but I preferred the form factor of the original Mini I had.

Over the past couple of weeks I had decided that I would buy the base iPad Mini 3 (or whatever the intended name would be) however, after being incredibly disappointed with the keynote yesterday, I just ordered the 16GB iPad Mini 2 from the refurb store for £199.

I would have got the 32GB but Apple UK have removed it from the refurb store. I also managed to find the smart case for £25 on eBay, so for £224 I think that represents a relative bargain.

The mini 3 is a minor spec bump. I honestly think that they are doing 2 year cycles for the iPad mini, and they only added the 3 this year because they didn't add Touch ID last year. I think there are on 2 year upgrade cycles but puttting the newest technology in every 2 years, rather than tech that's already a year old.

I really wanted to but looks like I'm going to have to go with the air 2. I have an original mini that's really struggle with 8 so an upgrade is in order. I don't upgrade tablets often so buy the newest and stretch it for a few years. The mini 3 has a year old internals so I'm going for the bigger one this time.

2 year cycles? It's only been two years since the introduction of an iPad mini and this is the third mini. I bought the iPad mini at launch in October of 2012.
I really hope your right by looking at the overall picture. I am so bummed out.
Ok, so I've got a 32 gb rMini that is perfectly good. I'll just be happy with that. I really wanted the arrow keys found in the landscape mode on the iPhone 6. Maybe 8.1 will add that feature to the iPads. It's a shame that the IPad mini line is being treated like a red headed stepchild. I've given Apple my feedback on this topic.

What I mean is that they are moving to 2 year cycles. Like this.

2012 -iPad mini
2013 -iPad mini 2
2014 -iPad mini 3
2015 -iPad mini 4
2017 -iPad mini 5
2019 - iPad mini 6

We can never predict perfectly , but I think we'll see a major mini update this year, but not one the year after.

I passed on the iPad Mini 3 and just ordered a 32GB iPad Mini 2 instead.
Good choice,
How can Apple management not know that this was an absolute mistake on their part? They are missing many sales this year from the iPad mini fan club.
I am their most ardent supporter. And I will not be buying the mini 3.
I'll simply keep my 32gb cellular rMini 2 and my money.

I don't know either. But I'm reading some folks here on the forum thinking that this could be the end of the iPad Mini line. I really hope not because I really love the Mini over the full sized iPad.
