I'm sticking with my rMini as it stands, there's nothing that even temps me with the newer model. I'm very happy with my iPad.

I would've stuck with my 1 year-old rMini as well, but I want to gift it to my sister, so I bought another one, avoiding the 3. ;)

Prior to the keynote, I was planning on getting Mini 3 to upgrade from the mini first gen both for more storage, Touch ID, and a faster processor. Granted it's not A8 nor A8X, but I'm still sticking with my plan.

I didn't plan on upgrading to the Mini 3 regardless but the lack of a real "upgrade" from Apple just made that decision a lot easier.

So I'll be keeping my iPad Mini 2 16GB LTE, though I'll be on the lookout for used ones of the same model but with more storage.

It's completely reasonable to want to upgrade to the 3 if you're coming from a 1. Aside from that, there's absolutely no justification to support this gouging from Retina Mini owners.

I would agree, if only, the person really, really, wants the gold option and/or Touch ID.

I love Touch ID on the 5s, but it's hardly worth it, to me, to spend the extra money for it over the Mini 2.

Certainly not. This iPad Mini 3 Cinderella is a huge disappointment.

For me the iPad Mini Retina was one of the best and most useful products Apple ever made, and I hate to see it's successor being so heavily demoted.

We will probably never know the thinking behind it; hopefully it is only a supply constraint issue with eg A8 processors.

Good news is that the iPad Mini 2 32GB is now a steal.

Unless you need Touch ID, there's no point to get a Mini 3. Similar specs and I can buy a 32GB Mini 2 for $50 less than a Mini 3 16GB. I'll wait for the Best Buy $75 off sale and I may get a Mini 2.

Nope. I'm going to get a 32GB Mini 2 WiFi. Very disappointed in the Mini 3.

I'm thinking of buying the iPad mini2 32GB WIFI model for 350 euros too.
It's now a great value for money i think.
Still odd that only TouchID (and a different gold color) is the change to the Mini 3.

Offtopic: I still find it odd that there is no weather, calculator, clock and stock apps from Apple included on the iPads.

Yeah, really disappointing with what they did. They have a reason for it, but we can only speculate.

What I do know is that I, and many of us, are very unhappy with it.

It could also be that because of the iPhone 6 Plus is getting very close to the iPad mini size but still the iPad is no iPhone.

Yeah, those missing apps has been very strange indeed. I don't see any real reason to exclude them.

The mini 3 is a minor spec bump. I honestly think that they are doing 2 year cycles for the iPad mini, and they only added the 3 this year because they didn't add Touch ID last year. I think there are on 2 year upgrade cycles but puttting the newest technology in every 2 years, rather than tech that's already a year old.

Except that the spec was not bumped.

I have the original IPad Mini and love the form, but I can't understand why the Mini 3 was even released.

Can anybody explain it to me?

I don't understand that either, Apple is really messing up their product line in my opinion. They still offer the Mini 1 for just $50 less, which is ridiculous if you look at the Mini 2, and than you've got the Mini 3 which is almost the same product as the 2, only then far more expensive.

I think that if they just discontinued the 1 and 2, the 3 wouldn't have looked so bad, especially if they would have offered a small price cut.

Well, there are two ways to look at it:

One, Apple is putting iPad mini development on a back burner, in favor of development on other products. iPad mini 2 basically only brought the retina display to the original mini, which some appreciate. I personally can't tell any difference between the original and retina screens in regular use, but some people can. The mini 3 only brought Touch ID. Both of these "upgrades" appear to be more in line with keeping the iPad mini specs on par with other products in the lineup, rather than a focused attempt to improve the iPad mini.

The other way to look at it is Apple did such a good job with the original mini, there's not a lot of room for improvement. I can't see anything significant that can be done to improve the form factor. The only improvements I'd like to see are in processing capabilities, storage and battery life. Even so, the current specs of the original model are more than adequate for what I expect from the iPad mini.

As someone else mentioned, the only reason to pay more for the mini 3 is if you want more than 32GB of storage, which is certainly a legitimate requirement for many users.

Unless I'm missing something, the only thing the iPad mini 3 has that the mini 2 doesn't is Touch ID, a feature I don't need or want. I'm still happy with my original iPad mini, but if I were going to get a new one, it would be the mini 2. My old eyes can't see any difference between mine and the retina display, so I'm not even in a rush for that reason.

64GB and 128GB storage are exclusive to iPad Mini 3. The iPad Mini 2 comes only in 16GB and 32GB.

Be interesting to see if they go with A8 (this years chip) or A9 (Next years).

Unless they actually strike off the Mini line entirely within the next year or two. That is quite possible; if the watch takes off, and tepid uptake on the iPad's continue (which isn't helped by the lukewarm announcements this year).

----------

The more I think about this after today's news....I think it's the end of the road for the iPad mini, after no change in processor or design, I seriously doubt they will make an iPad mini 4. In another year the market is going to change again and Apple will say it's not worth making an iPad mini 4.

And not updating the rMini will only hasten the self fulfilling prophecy.

----------

Good choice,
How can Apple management not know that this was an absolute mistake on their part? They are missing many sales this year from the iPad mini fan club.
I am their most ardent supporter. And I will not be buying the mini 3.
I'll simply keep my 32gb cellular rMini 2 and my money.

Well you have good impulse control. Apple is banking many people in your shoes with money burning a hole in their pockets will go buy-up the iPad Air 2 with better margins for themselves. And, they maybe right with the number of people saying things like "I may as well buy the Air".

Also, unless you require 64GB and 128GB; both of which are only available on the iPad Mini 3 new from Apple.

Yes, I know, as stated in my last post. That's not really a spec bump, as it's common for Apple to offer older versions of a model in only their lowest storage configuration. It may, however, be sufficient motivation for a decision to buy the mini 3, as stated earlier.

I'm with you. I didn't buy the retina Mini because it didn't seem like enough of an update from the original without Touch ID. Now that I can get one with both, I am in! Bonus: I can buy a 64GB model as well and get more storage.

Technically you could buy a refurbished Mini 2 in 64GB and 128GB versions.

Anyways I'm thinking of getting an iPad Mini 2 for myself after christmas. Hopefully the Apple refurb store has 64GB Mini 2 in stock by then. If not I'll spend extra to get a Mini 3 64GB.

I was going to buy the new iPad Mini 3, but after yesterday's keynote I went with the (newly discounted) refurb iPad Mini 2 with 128gb for $439! :)

If I really want to have an iPad at that size, I'd consider it. I don't think an extra $100 is too bad to have TouchID, but that's just me. It would be especially good if they improved the color gamut, but They probably would have mentioned that if they did. The bad colors turn me off entirely to the mini.

No Mini for me.

I've got a Maxi-(i)Pad, and wanted to go smaller. Tried the iPhone 6+, too small and too big.

But I decided to buy a Samsung Tab Pro 8.4, the discontinued model. Way happier with it; I wanted the GPS and the external connector and these make my file management so much easier. Geez, I can even do ethernet with it. Now I'm thinking of unloading the iPad, although it still does some stuff better. Better screen on the Samsung, though. The size of the Minis, now that they have better screens, makes them much better than their bigger cousins, although YMMV.
