Returned my 4S today and went back to 4.

Same reasons as OP. I'm happy with my decision, especially since I want to be upgrade eligible next year.

Haven't considered going back to my 4 although I still have it as a backup.

Siri is fun to mess with (endless hours of geek fun) although frustrating at times. She is still in beta and will inevitably get better over time. It'll be fun to be along for ride & see how she evolves.

The A5 speed increase is great, as well as the camera improvements, but the thing that really has me is the 64GB compared to my 32GB ip4. 32GB was never enough storage for all of my crap.

Lastly, we (wife and I) upgrade every year regardless of subsidy.

I dunno about siri being a gimmick. I guess I'm in a limited minority of those who hate typing on any phone. The dictation makes texting more bearable by a landslide.

I deliberately passed on the 4S since it just doesn't appeal.

Yet that said I had no choice but to buy one when my wife's iPhone shattered when dropped.

Did a side by side test of the 4 & 4S this weekend. I'm not declaring one better than the other since I don't believe in the "Winner" BS that others use to validate their purchases. Nor do I have anyone to impress. I buy far too many phones to get attached to any of them.

Come on... Siriously? Not declaring one better than the other?!?

Here's the situation... I offer you identical looking phones BUT one has better reception, faster, better camera, voice assistant if you choose to use it.

Which one do you choose? OF COURSE you choose the 4S. Anybody who says the 4 is kidding themselves and is arguing for the sake of it.

Yeah but that's not really the situation. You see, the 4S costs money. It costs money plus two-fifty for those without full upgrade eligibility.

Oh and it has worse battery life to boot.

For a great many people it just won't be a rational upgrade, and the 4 will still look as great as it always has as a phone.

We are not "kidding ourselves".

Cheers.

I'm loving the speed boost and Siri with the 4S but I am having some doubts about whether it's worth the £ it cost to switch from one to the other. Normally if the benefits are so good it's easy to justify but I really am in two minds whether to return the 4S and wait out the next version.

The speed boost is noticeable, the camera is marginally better and Siri is fun but seems a little limited in the UK so far so I'm not entirely sold on it.

I think I have 14 days to change my mind so I might play with it another week before deciding whether to switch back to the iPhone 4 and return the 4S.

There's no doubt the 4S is better than the 4, but is it THAT much better to justify the cost of switching mid-contract? I'm inclined to say no at this stage. That's not to say it's not a worthwhile upgrade for someone with a 3G or 3GS, but I am not noticing a MASSIVE difference compared to an iPhone 4.

I'm not talking about that you doofus. I totally agree that it may not be worth the upgrade for some people.

If you read VITZR's quote and my reply you will see I was talking about his saying there is no clear winner between the 4 and the 4s as phones. It was a silly statement on his/her part. The 4S is a better phone. There's no doubt about that. Now what is in doubt is what you pointed out and what many people are pondering - Is it better enough to justify an upgrade from a 4?

That's a personal choice that 4 users need to make. I got no problems with people sticking with a 4 over the 4s. Hell, I'd stick with a 4 if I had one.

BUT

How do you know the battery is worse? I seem to remember the benchmarks saying the battery tests came out about even with the 4.

If you could have Siri on your 4 but it ate up battery life a bit faster would you want it? Of course you would;)

With the Siri function (heavy network use) and location based reminders, the 4s is a BATTERY HOG!

There are many threads already on this. Quit being an Apple Fanboy.

Location based reminders killed the battery on 4 as well. In regards to Siri, if you are constantly using it, then why is it a surprise that the battery dies?

People don't actually realise, that the battery life shouldn't be judged during the 1st couple of days, when the phone is used way more.

4s wasn't that much of a change for me since I was already on iOS 5, so I am using it just as I was using my 4. The battery life seems to be the same if not better.

What people are experiencing are iOS 5 and not 4s issues.

Anyone thinking of doing this clearly didn't have the finances to make this a good decision in the first place.

What???

I do not worry about money, trust me, I buy the new phone every year, I make enough to enjoy the finer things in life, so that comment comes without merit...

I wish ppl would stop thinking they know everything, where do you base your facts???

I love the new camera, and some of the speed increases are great but fact is, doing the same thing with my 4 I do not get as good of battery life, and yes I drained it and charged it fully, but with a little browsing, games, Siri use and some basic functions this 4S drains way too fast, especially that I have a MobileMe account and work exchange account set to manual, these are two important things I need to have setup to Push but I can not.

Those that haven't read it on engadget, there's a port of siri to the iphone 4. They didn't really show how well it worked though. But thats one less feature you'll miss if you switch back to the ip4.

I am not really sure what people expected if they got the 4s and didn't like it.

Everything the 4s was supposed to be...it is

It is quicker for me, better camera, and a new phone (as in, actually new and not worn out or beaten up).....I didnt expect anything more really.

Some apparently either didn't read the actual upgrades or maybe are getting 4s phones that maybe dont satisfy them.

I think my i4S is going to have to go back. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic phone. It's definitely a bit snappier than my i4, the reception is improved, and of course the camera is a bit nicer. To be fair, I never had a problem with the speed, reception or camera on my i4, but any improvements are welcome. So why is it going back? Well, the screen is a disappointment. It has a yellow tint and the contrast is weaker, making all colours (not just white) look flatter and less impressive. Yes, I'm sure I will get used to it in time. It's not terrible. But considering the i4 was marketed primarily on the quality of its IPS screen, this is a step backwards - something one doesn't expect at this price. When I think of how much time I will spend looking at this screen, writing and reading texts and emails, surfing the web, playing games, admiring my photo albums or the latest movie trailer... I realise how much more important the screen quality is to me than a small speed bump, or even Siri (as fun as she is). Additionally, I can no longer turn off 3G on the i4S, which is going to really effect battery life considering I prefer to leave it off. So those are my reasons, like 'em or not. :D

iOS5 on my iP4 equals poor natt life and just as poor on my 4s - its the software not the device. i bet if you put 4.3.3 or 4.2.1 on a 4s the batt life would be dramatically improved. if it was possible

I bit the bullet and called up to return my iPhone 4S.

There's no question that it's a better phone than the iPhone 4, but I just don't think it's THAT much different to justify the cost of changing from one to the other if you're mid-contract. I have went back to my iPhone 4 this morning and I really can't notice a huge difference. I think that's more a compliment to the iPhone 4 with iOS 5 which seems to have sped up the device considerably.

No regrets on switching from my 32 gig black ip4 to my white 64 gig ip4s.

First off having 64 gigs is awesome. While I can't carry ALL of the music around that I want, I can carry MOST of what I want.

The overall experience of the ip4s using ios5 is also a pretty decent leap forward in my opinion. The whole interface just seems so much more smoother than the ip4. Throw in a better camera, and I don't see how anyone would want to go back to the ip4 unless they are just suffering from buyers remorse.

The only regret that I have is that I could not afford/justify getting both a black and a white 64 gig ip4s, especially since this is really the last Apple product that Steve Jobs had full control over the design and release of.

If the i45 does come out next summer, if I have trouble upgrading Im sure I'll have some regrets about getting the 4s, but I'll deal with that when it comes.

I'm thinking of returning mines also, in fact I'm already back to using my I4, and I haven't really notice the difference other than the boost in data speed. I don't really use my camera, and SIRI has a hard time understanding my heavy Jamaican accent, plus I kept getting this annoying static in my headphones whenever I used it. Since I could not reproduce it every time I figure I'll just return it and stick with the 4.

I'm going back to the 4 also. My battery life has just been bad. I've done two battery calibrations in three days but it's not improved. I've turned off everything cool and fun just to get through a day. What's the fun in that? It now feels like a faster 4 with bad battery life.

Battery is really bad?

You calibrated it right?

And the voiceover home button option has nothing to do with the 4S. It would be the same on your 4.

You dont need to calibrate a new battery.

The issue is more likely location services.

The battery is not the issue. Check some other threads. I turned off unneeded locations services and rest my network settings on the phone and my battery perform fine.
