Yeah, this is confusing as all hell. I highly recommend anyone who doesn't know exactly what he's doing not do anything until this mess gets sorted. Meanwhile, here's my simple take:

Just FYI...the current Pwnage update in order to unlock is for 4.1 only.

Clarification Needed

I thought there was a hack coming today that allowed you to jailbreak you're iPhone 3GS (newer bootrom) and have it be completely untethered. I see the "dev team" has released a new version of redsn0w today, but that only appears to unlock your device from it's carrier.

What am I missing here?

i understand that the new ultrasnow can unlock iphone 3g/3gs baseband 05.14.02. Correct me if I am wrong.

I have an iphone 3g 4.1FW with the above bb. What should I use to jailbreak it before I use the unlock.

Thanks in advance

Well, you can only unlock if you are jailbroken first. Did you read the Dev-Team blog? It has the info you are looking for. But so far as I can tell, these are all still tethered.

Please read the 1st post and post #24.

Is it going to be tethered or untethered?
Will I be able to update the firmware in the future?

Post 1 states it is tethered from what I can tell. The Dev-Team warnings are what you should read re: upgrading FW later. Definitely read their post. twice. There is a risk.

I thought it is untethered for iphone 3g...

Gotcha, thanks. Yes, I read the blog. I'm not looking for an unlock, just a jailbreak - but untethered for my 3GS with the newer bootrom.

You are wrong. But the Dev Team is releasing a tool to allow you to upgrade your baseband to 6.15.00 (an iPad baseband that appears to be compatible with the 3G(S) -- and which the new Ultrasn0w can unlock). You must be very careful in deciding to do this, particularly if your phone is in-warranty. And you need to be aware of serious implications...including that you will be unable to downgrade to official firmware versions.

TBH...I'm unclear on which versions are tethered vs untethered. If you are good on your current FW then I suggest waiting a couple of days until the dust settles. That's what I'm doing. I can't have a tethered JB.

iClarified usually has good step-by-step guides but probably will need a day or so for them to update.

So currently there is no straight unlock for 05.14.02?

at the moment all 4.2.1 is tethered. you can still do the devices on earlier jailbreaks if they qualify for jailbreakme.com or spirit.

I have a new bootrom 3gs with 5.12.01 running 3.1.3 and would really love to update but Im playing is safe and waiting for a few days til its all figured out.

but if I understand this mess (and im not sure I do) I will need a custom ipsw so I can have an unlock. but my problem is im a pc guy and have no access to a mac so I have no idea where Im going to get the custom ipsw......

Im on AT&T and dont need to unlock but it is for resale purposes when my wife will let me get the 4 :D

If I were you, I would upgrade to a custom 4.1 firmware made with PwnageTool. This will give you almost all the benefits of 4.2 while maintaining your baseband and ability to unlock -- and the jailbreak will be untethered. Unless you have a pressing need for some feature of 4.2, an untethered 4.1 jailbreak is far better than a tethered 4.2.

I agree with you 100% but how do I get the custom ipsw? I have no access to a mac.

I need an unlock, I just did the first part but with 4.1, do I need 4.2?? I am fine with 4.1....Now how would I proceed to unlock?

the last update by dev-team says
"The best news of all is for owners of iPhone3G, older iPhone3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G. Due to a combination of our original pwnage2 exploit, the arm7_go exploit, 24kpwn, and limera1n, your device is “just as jailbreakable as ever.” You reap the full benefit of an untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak."

Does it mean all iphone 3G - untethered?

This is what I'm thinking I should do also. So if I'm on 5.13.04 on the 3GS, I should use the new PwnageTool 4.1.3 or old Pwnage 4.1.2 to upgrade to 4.1 and then use the new Ultrasn0w to unlock and be untethered? I don't want to use the iPad bootrom :(

It works i just did it! i dont have a warrenty and i just wanted my freaking iPhone unlocked! haha.

I have baseband 4.26.08 and just want to update to firmware 4.2.1 on my old boot rom 3GS.

Reading the dev team site does it mean I can no longer keep my 4.26.08 baseband and have to update the baseband?

Same situation here. According to this post we have to wait but what does then the dev-team blog mean with

Directly after PwnageTool 4.1.3 is available, the official ultrasn0w repo http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com will be updated with ultrasn0w 1.2, which covers iPhone 4 baseband 01.59.00 and iPhone 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 and now 06.15.00.

Is the PwnageTool 4.1.3 the unofficial tool we are waiting for ??
