I need an unlock, I just did the first part but with 4.1, do I need 4.2?? I am fine with 4.1....Now how would I proceed to unlock?
No. 4.1 is perfectly fine. You can unlock with ultrasn0w, just like always.

Yeah, this is confusing as all hell. I highly recommend anyone who doesn't know exactly what he's doing not do anything until this mess gets sorted. Meanwhile, here's my simple take:
Just FYI...the current Pwnage update in order to unlock is for 4.1 only.
You are correct, for the 3GS only. I have made the change above.
I thought there was a hack coming today that allowed you to jailbreak you're iPhone 3GS (newer bootrom) and have it be completely untethered. I see the "dev team" has released a new version of redsn0w today, but that only appears to unlock your device from it's carrier.
What am I missing here?
i understand that the new ultrasnow can unlock iphone 3g/3gs baseband 05.14.02. Correct me if I am wrong.
I have an iphone 3g 4.1FW with the above bb. What should I use to jailbreak it before I use the unlock.
Thanks in advance
Please read the 1st post and post #24.
Is it going to be tethered or untethered?
Will I be able to update the firmware in the future?
Post 1 states it is tethered from what I can tell. The Dev-Team warnings are what you should read re: upgrading FW later. Definitely read their post. twice. There is a risk.
Well, you can only unlock if you are jailbroken first. Did you read the Dev-Team blog? It has the info you are looking for. But so far as I can tell, these are all still tethered.
is Apple still signing 4.1 FW?

Gotcha, thanks. Yes, I read the blog. I'm not looking for an unlock, just a jailbreak - but untethered for my 3GS with the newer bootrom.
You are wrong. But the Dev Team is releasing a tool to allow you to upgrade your baseband to 6.15.00 (an iPad baseband that appears to be compatible with the 3G(S) -- and which the new Ultrasn0w can unlock). You must be very careful in deciding to do this, particularly if your phone is in-warranty. And you need to be aware of serious implications...including that you will be unable to downgrade to official firmware versions.
So currently there is no straight unlock for 05.14.02?
I have a new bootrom 3gs with 5.12.01 running 3.1.3 and would really love to update but Im playing is safe and waiting for a few days til its all figured out.
If I were you, I would upgrade to a custom 4.1 firmware made with PwnageTool. This will give you almost all the benefits of 4.2 while maintaining your baseband and ability to unlock -- and the jailbreak will be untethered. Unless you have a pressing need for some feature of 4.2, an untethered 4.1 jailbreak is far better than a tethered 4.2.

I have baseband 4.26.08 and just want to update to firmware 4.2.1 on my old boot rom 3GS.
Reading the dev team site does it mean I can no longer keep my 4.26.08 baseband and have to update the baseband?![]()

Directly after PwnageTool 4.1.3 is available, the official ultrasn0w repo http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com will be updated with ultrasn0w 1.2, which covers iPhone 4 baseband 01.59.00 and iPhone 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 and now 06.15.00.
