Is the PwnageTool 4.1.3 the unofficial tool we are waiting for ??
iPhone Dev Team said:Update #3: For those Mac users with an old-bootrom 3GS who really know what they’re doing, here’s a minimal 3GS 4.2.1 bundle that will get you to 4.2.1 without updating your baseband. Be sure to uncheck “Activate the iPhone” using Expert mode. To actually jailbreak after you’ve restored with the help of that bundle, please use redsn0w. If you don’t know how to drop a bundle into PwnageTool.app, please hold off on 4.2.1 until it’s untethered for everyone (or wait for a nice tutorial from somewhere like http://iclarified.com)
I have an iPhone 3G on 4.1, 5.14 baseband. If I restore to a 4.1 custom IPSW with the iPad baseband, will my jailbreak still be untethered?
Yes. As I understand it, all iPhone 3G and old-bootrom 3GS owners still have untethered jailbreaks, even with 4.2.1. It's only new-bootrom 3GSes, iPhone 4s, and iPads that are tethered-only (for now) on 4.2.1.

ok thanks. Then I simply wait till there is a release which makes it easier. Btw, what does "untethered unlock" mean ? That even if I reboot the iPhone, it remains unlocked ?No, you need the unofficial bundle FOR PwnageTool 4.1.3. See "Update 3" on their post. That will allow you to upgrade an old-bootrom 3GS to 4.2.1 while preserving your old baseband. Then you jailbreak with redsn0w. I've quoted Update 3 below:

now are you talking with pawnagetool or redsnow or both? I cant find any info to back up your claim. Im not saying your wrong but just looking for clarification!
iPhone Dev Team said:The best news of all is for owners of iPhone3G, older iPhone3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G. Due to a combination of our original pwnage2 exploit, the arm7_go exploit, 24kpwn, and limera1n, your device is “just as jailbreakable as ever.” You reap the full benefit of an untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak.
LOL. Ok...at least it isn't just me who is confused. I'm fine on 4.01 but would love to update to 4.2.1. But there are just too many questions right now and I don't want to lose my untethered JB.
No disrespect intended, we're all thankful for the jailbreaks/unlocks/assistance, but do they not see how the number of comments probably has something to do with the condition of their documentation?
ok thanks. There is no such thing as a tethered unlock. A tethered jailbreak is one which leaves your phone unable to boot without the help of a computer.
Hmm. I seem to have done everything right but when I put in an activated T-Mobile SIM it just sits there and says "Searching..." for a very long time. Then it goes to one bar of service with no E or "T-Mobile" or anything. Is there something I need to do differently?"
so any news about an untethered JB for 3GS users with an old baseband ?
I have a 3gs, new bootrom, 4.1 FW, 05.14.02 BB, have jailbroken with limera1n and previously installed 1.1-1 ultrasnow trying to unlock, unsuccessfully. That's as far as i've got in the JB world !
Do i just follow all the instructions on iclarified or do i need to uninstall anything first ?
I need to unlock it for use overseas in 2 weeks, is there likely to be an easier way to unluck by then ?
Thanks for any help.
yes I have a mac. Which version of pwnage tool do I need ?If you have a Mac and know how to use PwnageTool, the iPhone Dev-Team came out with ipsw bundles for the old-bootrom 3GS.
