only a little confused

have read all over and over and do not have a clear idea of the following:

I want to have unlocked 3g, presently at BB 5.14, FW 4.2;: with the new PT and 6.15 BB does it end up
tethered ?? :confused::confused::confused:

I have an iPhone 3G on 4.1, 5.14 baseband. If I restore to a 4.1 custom IPSW with the iPad baseband, will my jailbreak still be untethered?

Is the PwnageTool 4.1.3 the unofficial tool we are waiting for ??

No, you need the unofficial bundle FOR PwnageTool 4.1.3. See "Update 3" on their post. That will allow you to upgrade an old-bootrom 3GS to 4.2.1 while preserving your old baseband. Then you jailbreak with redsn0w. I've quoted Update 3 below:

Update #3: For those Mac users with an old-bootrom 3GS who really know what they’re doing, here’s a minimal 3GS 4.2.1 bundle that will get you to 4.2.1 without updating your baseband. Be sure to uncheck “Activate the iPhone” using Expert mode. To actually jailbreak after you’ve restored with the help of that bundle, please use redsn0w. If you don’t know how to drop a bundle into PwnageTool.app, please hold off on 4.2.1 until it’s untethered for everyone (or wait for a nice tutorial from somewhere like http://iclarified.com)

Yes. As I understand it, all iPhone 3G and old-bootrom 3GS owners still have untethered jailbreaks, even with 4.2.1. It's only new-bootrom 3GSes, iPhone 4s, and iPads that are tethered-only (for now) on 4.2.1.

I have a 3g with 4.0 and 5.13 baseband. I just go to pwnage tool and put the 4.2.1 ipsw and then check preserve baseband. Then I use the custom firmware that comes out. Is this correct? Also can anyone make this custom firmware and pm it to me or something. Thank You!!

Thanks, will stick with 4.1 to be sure. Been waiting for this unlock for a long time, just like everyone else. Will post back with updates if successful.

now are you talking with pawnagetool or redsnow or both? I cant find any info to back up your claim. Im not saying your wrong but just looking for clarification!

ok thanks. Then I simply wait till there is a release which makes it easier. Btw, what does "untethered unlock" mean ? That even if I reboot the iPhone, it remains unlocked ?

There is no such thing as a tethered unlock. A tethered jailbreak is one which leaves your phone unable to boot without the help of a computer.

Again, quoting from the iPhone Dev Team blog:

The best news of all is for owners of iPhone3G, older iPhone3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G. Due to a combination of our original pwnage2 exploit, the arm7_go exploit, 24kpwn, and limera1n, your device is “just as jailbreakable as ever.” You reap the full benefit of an untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak.

So, both. All exploits which previously worked on these devices still work with 4.2.1, untethered.

You're definitely not the only one

LOL. Ok...at least it isn't just me who is confused. I'm fine on 4.01 but would love to update to 4.2.1. But there are just too many questions right now and I don't want to lose my untethered JB.

From the dev team blog:
Update #4: Our terrific moderators angiepangie, Confucious, sherif_hashim, dhlizard, and Frank55 have done a stupendous job moderating 7700 comments over just the first 12 hours

No disrespect intended, we're all thankful for the jailbreaks/unlocks/assistance, but do they not see how the number of comments probably has something to do with the condition of their documentation?

Why not have those moderators write the user documentation? I'm sure they're quite familiar with what exactly is confusing people.

Actually, if it's anything like usual releases, most of those comments will have been from people demanding more tools and acting like spoiled brats. Usually the comments over there are dominated by things like "PLZ UNLOCK IPHONE 4 NOW OMG I NEEDZ IT!"

it works

used new PT with ultrasnow 1.2, and ipad BB on old 3g, running 4.1, BB 5.14, but used custom 4.1 restore instead of custom 4.2.1
everything works fine on t-mob and untethered....

THANKS DEV TEAM AGAIN!!!

Hmm. I seem to have done everything right but when I put in an activated T-Mobile SIM it just sits there and says "Searching..." for a very long time. Then it goes to one bar of service with no E or "T-Mobile" or anything. Is there something I need to do differently?

EDIT: Nevermind, seemed to work itself out once I went into General > Network and turned off 3G. Receives calls, gets data. Great success!

Got past that

the first three times I tried to JB/UNLK I got the same result,,, after the fourth try with an old ATT sim in place I replaced it with the tmob sim (after the JB/UNLK) and tmob came up fine. For some reason the "network" tab under general did not show up until I put in the tmob sim, then it appeared and everything has been working fine.

I have a 3gs, new bootrom, 4.1 FW, 05.14.02 BB, have jailbroken with limera1n and previously installed 1.1-1 ultrasnow trying to unlock, unsuccessfully. That's as far as i've got in the JB world !
Do i just follow all the instructions on iclarified or do i need to uninstall anything first ?
I need to unlock it for use overseas in 2 weeks, is there likely to be an easier way to unluck by then ?
Thanks for any help.

5.14.02 can't be unlocked. You have to update your baseband to 6.15.00 in order to unlock.

+1 The work the team does is nothing short of amazing, don't get me wrong. But like most engineers in this world, while they can program something, they are not good explaining things to a non engineer. I also wish they would just lay it out phone model by phone model, in clear plain English what is you can and can't do. The current post on 4.2.1 by the team is a NIGHTMARE to read and determine what you need to do. Those 6, count 'em 6 updates don't help matters any.

I agree with what latinist said (I used to spend a lot of time helping people on that blog) most of the posters on the team's blog are either spoiled brats asking again and again for something that doesn't exist or they are the classic iphone owner who rushes to update and then attempts to make the team their scapegoat for their issue.

sorry to ask again but is it possible to JB and unlock my 3GS which has currently iOS 4.0 with a 04.26.08 ? If there are some hacks to do 1st with the unofficial bundles, are there any tutorials ?

cheers,
Tex
