I will not buy a computer with a glossy screen, simple as that. I really do not like the idea of sticking something to the screen to make it anti-reflective.

This really ****ing pisses me off as I'm currently migrating everything I do from Windows XP to OS X on this computer. If in three years my new computer has to be a PC because I want a matte screen, I'll be pissed as hell.

Agreed

The fact is, people really do need the screens 'matte'

Apple are slightly loosing there sense and touch here.

Really really poor

the black keys make it look like a toshiba :) LOL

Apple is just trying to increase their net profit.

They used to have colored laptops, now they dont anymore
they basically just killed the difference betweent macbooks and macbook pros

nothing new, after years of the same design, this was the best they can come up with? ive been patiently waiting for about 3 years for a new design.

I had high hopes for today. Oh well..

Glad, I made the right buying decision

I'm so glad I got my 17" hi-res matte display a few months ago. As a person who does video work, having the FW400 and FW800 ports running simultaneously for vid capture and loading to an external drive has been a godsend.

At least that's still available right now. If I were you guys I would jump at the 17's before that one goes glossy as well.

And I still like the elegent design of my MBP, the chiclet looking keyboard looks kinda cheap to me. Very Air'ish.

I'm not a big fan of glossy displays either, but after a year with my iMac I don't have a problem with it anymore... in fact it wasn't even the issue I expected before I bought it. Apart from that, in my opinion the color accuracy argument is not entirely correct, whoever relies on a LAPTOP screen for color critical work has a problem anyway, that's why I have an Eizo monitor connected to my iMac. ;)

That said, no matter how anyone will argue, it sure as hell sucks that they don't at least offer a matte option... why... WHY?

I wanted to buy a MacBook Pro next year but now I guess I'll save some cash & get a MacBook. Now is my chance as long as I'm still used to 1280x854 on my PowerBook. :)

MBP was a mix of Pro and Consumer machines, kinda of landing right in the middle of it. It was never a proper pro machine, ( No Professional Graphics cards such as FireGL adn Quadro for example ) but yet it satisfied pro users quite nicely.

It's sad to see that now it's getting closer to consumer area, leaving prosumer class.

If it wasn't 9600GT, I'd call it Macbook 15"

Pity...

Disappointed!
Compared to actual workstations from other manufacturers this new MBP is a toy!

- lame graphic-> why not a Quadro like in the Thinkpad or at least a 9650GT which doesnt need more power but is ways faster and 55Nm built?
- why no 1680x1050 sreen option for CAD users?
- why no matte option?
- why no more connectivity options (eSata would be nice and at least one more USB on the other side)
- stupid arangement: displayport placed first, usb and firewire behind

Here in germany the MBP from the refurbstore are suddenly sold out:D

Its makes me want to puke. The black bezel is awful, glossy??, what the F, it looks like a kid computer not a professional computer. Even the new display is terrible.

I'm selling my apple stock, its gonna tank for sure.

I love the bottom half, but the top? Not so much. I think I'll be buying the next Mac Pro instead. Shame that I'll have to shell out so much more cash, but I need a pro-level machine.

I have a question:
did the designers of MBP work or try to work on the new MBPs?
if they did, then there probably would be no problems with the glossy screen.
maybe.

Ok,

I was going to buy 17" MBP but I am not gonna do that anymore.
15" has better graphic cards and option for switching when 17" is still the same?
15" has new one aluminium enclosure (that is actually nice one) whereas 17" doesn't?

I could live with the glossy even if I prefer matte. I could live with the ridiculous iMac style black frame and stupid black chicklet keyboard that looks so cheap and so ordinary. But I can't live with the fact that 15" is not essentially "better" thank 17" and that is the reason why I will pass.

Really disappointed and I hope that Apple will fix it soon or by MWSF! Otherwise I will wait a year for Nehalem as my gf will lend me her laptop if I do need one for my occasional travelling.
I thought I would treat myself for a nice early xmas present but its not gonna happen.
Shame on you Apple

Ok look i love glossy and that's what i have on my "old" MBP. But i think consumers ought to have the option to choose...

My two pence:
- No FW on MB
- Lack of Cinema Displays for my MP
- Gloss only on CD and MB/MBP
- Ignorance on the Blu-Ray issue (Wasn't really expecting it in the NoteBooks, but their frame of mind on the issue has made it clear we wont see it for a long time. Going to have to buy a vista HTPC now, so much for trying to get more market share?)

This is enough to put a serious amount of users off. Disappointed.

I mean, don't get me wrong, the laptop is pretty and all but... Only glossy?! Even with the cinema displays?! Are they mad?!
There's a REASON people buy matte! It's for more reliable colors! Also, it's kind of nice to NOT see your mug on the laptop at ALL times. <_<
Are they TRYING to alienate their customers who depend on their screens?!
I mean, not ALL of us are casuals who just need the computer for surfing the web and typing, some of us actually depend on our screen!

God, I feel so let down. Now, I'm really glad that I got my Hi-Res 17'' MBP when I did instead of waiting for the refresh. =(

Glossy screen only = totally disappointing direction...(could they have plans to introduce propro level mbp's in January?)

Glossy 24" display = totally disappointing...gonna get me a NEC...

happily, I bought a MBP this past April so I'm good for a while...but afraid, when I do need to upgrade, of what will be available for someone who does graphic design and photography work on their computer and nothing else...

today seems like bad decisions by Apple...wonder if there'll be design changes in the near future...can't imagine any designers/photographers being happy with todays announcements...

OMG lol, so much fuzz because the screen is glossy? Please. I have a asus notebook with a glossy screen, and I never had problems with it. I'm happy with that kind of screen, and I think the only thing that matters is the quality of the glossy by it self. There is the good quality glossy and the bad quality glossy, and I really don't believe that apple would bet on a bad quality glossy screen.

You can moan and compare good and bad gloss all you like. By the sounds of it your not a Professional user, therefore won't understand our reasons for moaning.

Professional users who actually use their machines to earn a living, stare and work on their machines for hours on end would sooner have a matte display, firstly it's easier on the eyes and colours are more faithful, plus it comes without all the annoying glare!!!

By the way, how many Professional Pre-Press TFT panels have you've seen that are glossy? All the Glossy one's I've seen have been cheap and nasty consumer displays - great for watching movies, previewing your holiday snaps and video games... but ***** for everything else.

Time to start snapping up last-gen ACD's for the matte panels. I can't see them going back to matte anytime soon. That would be like saying, "oops, we were wrong to gloss out the whole line."

There is some serious workflow loss for visual artists with this "upgrade".

  • Glossy is a killer for design work (Anything visual really) UNLESS you work off an external screen for all of your color work.

  • FW400 is still used very heavily in the visual arts world.

  • The video upgrade has the potential to blow up some existing apps (After Effects for one).

  • Blueray support is a needed option if for anything the option to put files on it.
the bad news in this for me is that this means DVDSP will not see a Bluray authoring update fo awhile either

Oh well. I will be content with the MacPro upgrades and hunker down for awhile.

Also...

I really think this is another sign that Apple is moving more and more into a consumer electronics role and trying to delicately lead on their pro users for as long as they can.

I don't know about "amazingly disappointed," but I'm a bit underwhelmed. I'm rather peeved about the glossy stuff though. I'm glad I bought the last gen MBP with matte screen. Although in a few years when I finally upgrade again, it might be painful. But if the current trends continue, all laptops will be glossy by then anyway. :sigh: :(

i don't know if anyone has said this already but..
you can still buy the 20, 23, 30 inch matte displays,
and you can still buy the 17 inch matte macbook pro.

and personally i can't wait to get my hands on the new mbp =) loves it

Seems like a good time to buy old hardware. A Peryn MBP with an old 23" Cinema Display is still a great setup with all the benefit of matte screens and compatibility.

I don't understand why people are complaining about the looks and how it looks similar to the Macbook consumer line now. I get the technical things like glossy vs. matte and keyboard...but what did you think they were going to look like??

Thing I'm most mad about is that they didn't update the 17" model today which is what I'm waiting for. Do you think they are waiting to put Blu-ray and some other features in?? I really hope that's why I'm waiting.

Also I have no say in functionality as I am only a pre-medical major at university and not graphic design  and I'm getting the full spec 17" just because...
