Nothing special about the Red that makes it $70.

It's leather and all Apple leather smart covers are $70.

I wanted the Red but wasn't about to pay that.

MacMall has/had the best price, $49.99 for authentic Apple leather ones.
But sadly, they don't carry Red, at least when I ordered.

I picked up the Navy one and love it.

Just as an FYI those from MacMall at that price are old stock.
They are not the newer colors

I originally bought a back case and a black leather smart cover when I got my iPad. After looking at it, it didn't quite live up to the $70 price tag so I wound up returning it and getting something a little more protective instead. I'm happy with the case I got now but will probably get another case whenever Speck releases their FitFolio case. Don't think I'll get another smart cover again. Way too overpriced for a simple piece of fabric essentially.

I think all the Apple smart covers are crap, especially for the price.

There are so many better cases out there.

Can I return mine?

I for one have buyers remorse. I don't need the smart cover around my home -- it gets in the way -- so I got the smart cover to carry around the iPad. In theory it's a nice concept: you protect the glass but dont hide the thin and beautiful iPad design. In practice, it doesn't work. The iPad is so thin that it doesn't feel safe carrying it for extended periods or distances. You need a case, sleeve or bag to give it enough width to comfortably carry.

I'm going to shop for a leather sleeve now and the black leather smart cover that I overpaid at $70 is going to sit unused. Does anybody know Apple's return policy? It's been opened and used. I'm not holding out on Apple taking it back but if I had to pay a restocking fee it might be worth it.

EDIT: Apple has impressed me again. They returned my 2 weeks old, open and used Smart Cover and gave me back my money with a smile, no questions asked. Say what you want about Apple products being over priced but their customer service is by far the best of any retailer ever. Anywhere.

What's the difference between leather Smart Cover. One got product code: MC947ZM/A and another the same black leather got MD301ZM/A ?

to answer the question, yes, it should be $40 max and even at that its not functional enough compared to what other companies make

I'm very very picky and after going through and returning several cases. Find myself happy with the smart cover.

I like the minimal approach and find a smart cover with back skin does that best.

If rather then smart cover it was a smart bag that'd be awesome though.

Imagine the incase maki meets the apple smart cover.

Wakes when you pull it out of the bag. Sleeps when you put it in. Can fold into same positions as smart cover, with same durability and attaches to case magnetically to secure.

I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

Only non issue I have with smart cover is today for example it was lightly drizzling on way to car. I don't do bags. If cover was a sleeve would better protect from the elements.

Guys remember I made fun of u for buying a $70 red leather cover?! Plus tax!

Well I bought one lol

For $20 used.

It's in good condition but I'm going to try to get it exchanged for a new one. There is a little blemish on the leather that is bugging me.

Anyways u guys made me cave!

I too wanted the red leather but was unwilling to shell out $70 and still not be properly covered in the back. At the end of the day I went with the iPad 2 version of targus's versavue leather case and could not be happier. Very well padded, leather feels nice, love the way it looks and feels. Money better spent IMO. As much as I wanted the magnet on/off feature I could not justify it.
