Coming from the paid mobile me service, I am very disappointed in iCloud.

I thought I would be able to upload anything I wanted to to the "cloud" like my import PDF documents I may need.

But Apple restricts what documents you can upload (cough cough they want you to use iWork).

Plus I back up my phone once every 30 days so iCloud isn't necessary for me.

I just want my MobileMe back...I never should have converted over last week. I lost use of my iDisk. I loved being able to upload huge files and being able to share them with my friends and family so they can download. (many email providers restrict email attachments to 10-25MB).

You Still Have

MobileMe until 2012,unless I'm missing something. I didn't have it in the first place, but have friends who do. They echo your sentiments. iCloud storage for me would need to run @ 50GB I priced it, it's okay, but that switch is Off and it's staying that way. Prefer my own backups, and on iPad and iPhone the warning"your data will no longer be backed up to your computer" is enough to stop me using it.

Yes I know I can connect the cable and do it the old fashioned way, but for you with older MobileMe accounts it would seem a step backwards.

I don't see iCloud as a backup solution (although it performs that function too) rather as a real-time, wireless sync service.

We have two iPhones, an iPad, and a MBP so, for example, being able to change/add a phone number to a contact on one device and have that contact's info updated on all other devices with no intervention or connecting them to a computer is brilliant. It also avoids Sync Conflicts which you would get doing it the old way through iTunes on a Mac or PC when data had been updated differently on two devices, e.g. a number added as Mobile on one device and the same number as iPhone or Other on another device.

That was the one feature of MobileMe that I liked but as I didn't need the e-mail or webspace as I already have these with my own domain I couildn't justify the £60/year cost of MM.

It's the tried and oh so profitable "Freemium" model.

Lure the customers in with the one word they can't see past... FREE

Then charge a fat premium for what they actually need.

Apples going to make tons of money. It's what they do best.

Apple has become the cash cow of the industry.

Backup is only one component of iCloud.

The real power is document sync, but until more apps support it and more of them cross over to the Mac then it is not super useful.

The best example I can give right now is using Pages between an iPad and iPhone. Start a document on one device and then pick up the other and continue right where you left off. This will be much more useful once the Mac version of pages supports iCloud.

The idea is basically like Dropbox, but without having to remember to save to your Dropbox. And on iOS it is even better as it doesn't require you to use "Open In" to sync files, as any app can sync in place if you allow it.

iCloud is simply MM with a broken leg.

Totally agreed. I am willing to pay $100-150 for a proper iCloud service that lets me upload up to 1gb file of my choosing and letting my friends download via an email link.

Some email providers don't accept attachments over 10mb. And no I am not sharing illegal movies or music either.

I scan a lot of documents that I also need to access ( it's encrypted PDF files )

Until iCLoud @me.com supports realtime updating the mail.app on the iDevice I will not switch over. iCloud touts syncing across all devices, yet when I read an email on my iPhone it doesn't update my iPad. Hotmail,Yahoo,Google does.

I'm still running Snow Leopard on one of my Macs so I think I'll stick with MobileMe for as long as I can. As it stands, I think I'll lose more than I gain by moving to iCloud.

I don't know, at first I was having trouble with iCloud, but it was getting over the hump of what was actually in the iCloud versus what was local on the computer. Once I moved my contacts, once I moved my bookmarks, everything started jiving. All three computers are in sync, and once I get my final work machine (PC), I'll throw iCloud on that one as well.

I also didn't want to trust the backups but I finally said, you know what, if my hard drive for time machine fails, or God forbid, a fire, I lose my backups. I want everything in the cloud for security.

I do agree, that 5GB is far too small, and I might need an upgrade, especially since I have my iPhone 4S 32GB and iPad 2 64GB backing up to the cloud :).

That's not true. I moved my mail from a crappy ISP/POP3 service to iCloud. Thought about Google, but just couldn't get myself to do it. Anywho, if I read an email on the Web, or Mail.app on my Mac, then go to my phone, it's marked as read. Or if I read it on my phone, and go to the Web, etc. it's marked as read, or deleted...

By default, iCloud seems to want to back up the entire OS. So, first thing in the morning I'm met with a message that iCloud can't back up my 32gig iPad and I need to purchase more space.

People thinking they're getting a complete backup with a 5 gig account are in for a rather unpleasant surprise come restore time.

Sure, I can use Spotify, but then I have to build playlists for 12,000 songs...

This is why Spotify is annoying. Try Rdio. It's very much the same service, but with a MUCH better mobile app, web access, and you can just add albums to your 'collection'. Best part is, the collection starts off by scanning your library and matching songs from your library to it's library and automatically adding those to your Rdio collection, so you can skip most of that part as well.

That is definitely not true. My 16GB iPad backup size is 103MB. It backs up OS settings, pictures, app data, which apps you have, etc.

I used the iCloud to back up my iPhone 3GS which took up 1.5GB. Then when I got my iPhone 4s I set it up without connecting to iTunes and restored from my iCloud backup. It was nothing short of amazing as it restored all of my settings, kicked off automatic downloads for all of my apps, and put them all in the places they were on my 3GS. Once this was complete I hooked up to iTunes to copy my music on to my 4S since iTunes Match isn't available yet. Eventually I shouldn't need to hook up to iTunes at all though.

I see the syncing bit between iDevices, but I really don't need my calendar events pushed to my iPad, which is a shared device amongst my family members. I thought about uploading all my ebooks to iCloud so I would have them everywhere, but it seems like I can't even do this. At first, I thouht that iCloud was just another Dropbox, but it isn't. It's a lot worse.

Really? Check again. If you don't receive another email on @me.com or you don't open the mail.app on the other device, the badge count does NOT update. So for example, I read my email on iCloud.com but my iPhone still shows an unread count on the app badge.

Ya, I did. And it updates. Not sure what you have going on, but it works for me. Sent an email from my work address to @me.com. Checked the iCloud via web, opened it and waited. Picked up my phone, no new messages. Opened it, and the mail was there, and marked as read...

i was using mobileme to have synced calendars between my wife and i, and thats still the biggest feature for me with icloud. that and walking out of the apple store with my new 4s being completely set up from my iphone 4 icloud back up.

i havent used documents yet, but i do have pages on my iphone, ipad and macbook air. so that will be useful when the time comes.

Just did the same. Had my iPhone on the home screen - no badges for mail. Sent an email to my @me.com address. Got push notification on the iPhone and badge shows 1 message. Went to iCloud.com web, read that message and 5 mins later I still have that unread badge on the iPhone. How are you setup?

iCloud is simply MM with a broken leg.

I have MM and like it quite a bit. I haven't switched over to iCloud yet. What's the broken leg part, compared to MM?

I do think iCloud will come into its own if and when there are different user accounts for the iPad.

I need it ..

all my contacts are stored there.

its great.. so if i lose my phone, or it breaks etc. i dont lose my contacts. :)

i've tried that 2 times before.. and it really sucks. couldn't contact anyone! :p

can anyone explain definitively what the difference is between iCloud "storage and backup" is versus iCloud "documents & data" and what each thing stores?

I am confused by this.

I started reading some posts but had to stop. I'm honestly appalled at the posters on this forum. It seems like every thread I read has more than one person shooting off about how wrong someone else's opinion is. It must be an apple thing because over on PC forums you get none of this.

The trolling, judgmental and of "My opinion is right and yours is wrong" manner of posts here is rampant. It gives the forum the feel of an Xbox 360 community, filled of children.

I'm sorry I went off but seriously folks, everyone has different opinions.

A few of you had some good points for your own personal needs. As for me the only thing I really like is the contact sync which unfortunately misses about 7/10 of my contacts, don't know why.

If my device breaks I'll have a backup on my computer. So I'll lose the days worth of data, I'll live. (again this might be useful for businessmen who write documents on their devices, I don't.

If I need to back up, it makes no difference to me if it's plugged in at home or wireless. In fact I'd rather it be plugged in so it charges.

Game saves? I'm a PC gamer, iPhone games keep my attention for about 30 seconds.

If my phone breaks, I go get a new one and connect it to the Pc or MBP and do a backup.

After seeing cloud computing for myself? I honestly don't believe it's "the way of the future". I don't see the majority of consumers using services like this when the can go home to their 1Tb HDD's and swap files faster and with less battery strain. it's my OPINION, and anyone thinks I don't deserve it doesn't deserve their own.
