I'm pretty happy with a Cozip soft polycarbonate case for the back of my phone. It's almost unnoticeable, and it is less slippery that the phone without it. It comes with a front protector that snaps in, but I prefer not to use that. I'm not that worried about scratches on the back, but I like the way this makes it feel to hold. I do have a screen protector, which is essentially completely invisible.

There is what the Cozip looks like. There are some other quite similar versions by other companies.

I've never dropped my black iPhone3G ... ever! I have a black rubber InCase on it though. I like my phone exactly the way it is and have no need for a metal cover (doesn't metal significantly weaken the antenna signal anyway?). If they do offer a metal cover on the next iPhone, I sure hope it is only as an option. :)

APPLE is taking notice that the PLASTIC iPhone is selling MUCH MUCH better than the old metal iPhone did. At the end of the day, Apple will certainly not ignore this fact.

You do notice that the sole reason the iPhone 3G sold well was because of its 199 price tag compared to the original 499 price tag. If they sold one with a better material back, I would have bought that one instead.

Same here. I think the average consumer (uninformed/uneducated on the product) is going to look at price as opposed to materials.

I'm not trying to throw a fit, but I'm really starting to hate my iPhone's plasticy-ness. It scratches no matter how you use it and one drop makes the whole phone look like s***. I know you're just going to tell me to put a case on it, but I have and it makes no difference. I've tried the Contour Flick, InCase Slider, and InCase Protective Cover and none of them make any difference whatsoever. I REALLY hope the next generation iPhone is metal because I hate the current back. I don't honestly care about how the signal gets affected because I'd rather have a phone with a slightly weaker signal than a phone that cracks and scratches every single day of normal use.:(:apple:

Its not going to make much of a difference. I still have my first Gen iPhone and its got loads of scratches even though I take care of it.

Still, when it comes to looks, I definitely want the next iPhone to be Aluminum. Makes it look more pro like, and more in-line with the new MacBooks.

I really want the next iPhone to be metal. When I've held the original iPhone and the 3g side by side, the original just feels like a much higher quality product, and it looks better imo. Even if the next iPhone still retains some plastic on it for signal like the original iPhone, i'll be very happy.

+1

Even though I've come to enjoy the all-black look of my 3G I'd rather have aluminum. Hell, if they went back to the original design with 3G I'd be completely happy.

Here you go, the solution. What would you pay for a platinum iPhone? I heard one of these platinum bad boys costing about 20,000 GBP in the UK, 1st gen style looking phone. But 20K is quite cheap for that amount of platinum I think, don't quote me on that. Don't get me wrong though, platinum will still scratch like a b***h. :p

Invisible Shield it!

I have no issue with the use of plastic, I just wish it textured and not smooth. It makes the thing so slippery, that I had to put a Contour Fusion case on it - not really for protection, but to make it more grippy in the hand.

I'm pretty sure plastic will be somewhat eliminated in the next version of the iPhone.

How do you propose they'll do that? Not arguing, just curious. :D

Think they'll go aluminum again?

Probably. I say that because of the new Macbooks and such. There is the whole signal strength argument, but who knows what they have up their sleeve. And after all the cracking issues people have had with the plastic. I just can't see them going on with the black and white.

Agreed. And with all of their ingenuity, I'm sure they'll find a way to either strengthen the antenna or make partial plasic look really nice. Again.

Exactly. Knowing Apple, I think appearence is higher than performance on their little chart of importance for them right now.

I don't even have an iPhone yet and I can tell ya I wasn't thrilled when they released the iPhone 3G with "Plastic" backing.

Shortly after the 3G release there were several reviews posted all around saying how the new plastic backing felt really nice and all but then we start hearing of cracking issues and STILL are TODAY!

I want durability and I'm not talking indestructable but just a phone that will hold up as well as the previous 10 or so phones I've owned which have never just "cracked" from normal, everyday use. And no, I don't necessarily 'baby' my phones but I know how to take care that I don't leave them in a position to be deformed. Having to worry that your iPhone is going to crack just putting it in your front pocket is ridiculous if you ask me, but with all the reports of stress fractures leading to cracks and light leaks and soforth I would probably be one of those worry warts, especially knowing I just paid 300 bucks for it!

If a new iPhone isn't released this June/July then I will pick up whatever current model iPhone there is and be happy and (careful).

I did like the 1st gen iphone material and design despite the lack of signal strength everyone supposedly noticed but I say with the next iPhone they either need to up the quality of plastic they are using (thicken perhaps?) or use another material altogether.

Carbon Fiber?

Maybe a newly designed backing like the first gen with a mix of aluminum and plastic?

I hate it for you all that have had to exchange 1, 2....7 iPhone's and are still having problems. I hate it to the point where its made me a bit fearful of buying right now for the fact that I don't want to end up being a victim and having to return my phone so many times that I finally get pissed and give up on the phone I've been looking foward to getting for nearly 2 years now.

So here's to hoping Apple has something better in the works to announce this summer.

Peace. ;)

+1 I fully agree and was thinking the same. I'm guessing they may use glass in stead of plastic in a bottom block much like the first gen iPhone (not really sure how well it allows radio signals through), but the aluminum is something I'm almost sure will come back to the iPhone soon.
