I'm hanging on to it, but only by a thread

Dude... I wouldn't carry mine around on a thread... what if the thread breaks and your iPhone smashes? The iPhone is kinda heavy... it can break a thread I imagine. :p

If I got a first gen iPhone a while ago, will I be able to use it to qualify for the next iPhone upgrade?

Depends on if you have only used that phone for the past two years on AT&T. It was unsubsidized so if so you can upgrade no problem. Now if you had this or that phone in between or what not then you never know.

Your best bet is to contact AT&T and ask them when you are update eligible.

yes & no...
bought the iPhone 5 minutes into its original release:):), bought the 3G 3 minutes into its release:):):), replaced the battery on first and gave it to my wife:D, she resisted in the beginning but now loves her iPhone:apple:

My story:

Bought an original refurbished iPhone 16GB.
Used it for 3 months.
Realized that AT&T was rolling out 3G in my area.
Gave my iPhone to my girlfriend for free.
Bought an iPhone 3G and had it replaced 3 times for different issues.
Used my iPhone 3G for about 6 months
Bought a used original iPhone 8GB, but it was all scratched up.
Bought a refurbished original iPhone 4GB in mint condition.
Sold my 8GB and kept the 4GB.
Activated my 4GB iPhone and put my 3G in a drawer.
I like the original iPhone and 3G doesn't live up to it's hype. It's still pretty slow for me.

The end.

At least I always have the option of switching back to my 3G again. I just think the metal case on the 1st gen iPhone is a lot better and smoother in my hands. The plastic just gets super greasy and dirty too easily and that bothered me to the point where I was afraid to touch my iPhone if I didn't wash my hands. I hated wiping it off every time I used it.

wait let me get this straight, you arent using the 3G phone you bought becasue you dont like the feel of it compared to the original metal one!? i can understand not using because you dont wanna pay the extra 10 a month in data charges, but cmon, the 3G has much more usability than the 2G, esp once 3.0 comes out...

im pretty confident that all previous iphone owners are eligible for the 200/300 subsidized pricing regardless if your eligible for an upgrade through ATT. thats how it was for me when i bought my 3g on launch day.

Hehe. Actually, I just switched back to my 3G again. I thought EDGE wouldn't be so bad, but it wasn't ideal. I'll just live with the 3G and I like having a better signal anyway.

Yes. That is assuming that they have stayed with the original iPhone. What I am saying is like me for example. I had the original iPhone and then went to a Sony Ericsson. Therefore, when upgrading to the iPhone 3G, I had to pay $399 because I wasn't upgrade eligible.

I am just saying that there are various scenarios and possibilities so the best bet is to check with AT&T.

To be honest, I would have rather had the original iPhone than the 3G one. It not only looked better, but it didn't have the glossy-plastic back which attracted fingerprints so much and it wasn't as fragile. I always see people going around with the original iPhone without a case but I've only seen one person who doesn't own a case for their 3G iPhone.

Also, I could care less about 3G because EDGE is fast where I live and the phone itself has Wi-Fi. If it didn't have Wi-Fi then I would have to rethink all of this.

I know that I can get the iPhone on T-mobile unlocked and whatnot but then I wouldn't be able to update it and the process would be too stressful.

If T-mobile sold the iPhone then I wouldn't hesitate to purchase one because I know they would offer insurance that covers anything on the phone and their plans are much cheaper than AT&T's. I would be fine with EDGE and the phone itself has Wi-Fi.

Since that may not be possible for a while, I'm sticking with my new Curve and getting an iPod Touch 2G.

The glossy back gets more fingerprints than the freakin' screen on the 3G... By the way... I don't have a case on my 3G and neither does my brother, my cousin or my brother's friend. I rarely see a 3G without a case. On the other hand, I don't usually see people with an original iPhone with a case either. I hope the next version of the iPhone has a more solid construction and a matte finish.

whats the "much more usability" here? as far as i know the 2G can do almost everything the 3G does, minus the 3G capabilities (data speeds and GPS). and as for firmware 3.0, 2G users will not have access to A2DP or MMS... no biggie, since there are other ways to MMS (if you really need it) and stereo BT kills your battery twice as fast anyways.

MMS is a big deal to a lot of people but may not be to others. I'd like the idea of sending MMS messages, though. The iPhone has a decent camera and photo viewing is really nice.

To me, it wasn't such a big deal since I hardly send pics. I didn't care for landscape at all. In fact, I didn't like using the landscape keyboard on AIM because the keys were too spread out.

But that's totally different because if you were upgrading from a 2G to a 3G, you did not previously have a subsidized phone. The 3G is subsidized, so AT&T needs you to fulfill the contract to recoup that subsidy.

I still have my 2G iphone from 2 days after iday. It's still amazing device, but I confess, I'll be going for the new one this summer!

Glad I'm not the only one who prefers the current keyboard. I tend to avoid using the landscape one in Safari, it just seems awkward

16 gb.
i didnt want to sign a 3 year contract with rogers. i pay $50ish a month on pay as you go.

if the next iphone impresses me i'll consider signing a contract, if not i'll pick up a 3g on ebay and unlock.

I am, I'm poor. I tried to look for one on Craiglist but as soon as they realize you want one to unlock they jack the price up. The only thing I need from the 3G is GPS, I loved it on my Verizon enV1, why this iPhone didnt get it is beyond me tbh.

It's alright, it makes phone calls, surfs web, and plays music which is why i got it.

And I refuse to get an iPhone plan. Don't need data, screw that, I'm happy with my unlimited txt and basic plan.

Keeping my iPhone after I get it back from my mom. When I upgrade to teh next iPhone after giving her my 3G, I will then retire the first gen to its box to save as a collectors item. Hopefully it will be worth a nice hunk of change when I grow old. I can see it going down as one of the most revolutionary devises ever, as well as the most successful. Truly innovated the cell phone industry and changed it forever. It's a keeper!

ah yeah, i see. at&t will find any way to screw you out of some money that they can

Bought mine from a guy near Times Square and have babied it ever since.

Except dropping it that first night I had it, there's not another dent or hardly any scratches on it and few people always think its a new iPhone for some reason (dumb)

Paying 6 bucks a month for data, 20 for unlimited texts on all 3 phones of my family, and 700 minutes with myfaves. I enjoy a very cheap iphone :)

So no, I will not be updating anytime soon. I love the build quality and the sleekness of the original, and not upgrading to any cheaply made 3G that everybody else in the world has.

Although when something breaks and I have to take it apart, maybe it'll be a different story (I have to admit the 3G is A LOT easier to disassemble)
