I don't hate the camera control button, but it's not a "where have you been all my life?" feature to me either.

Like most other people, I’m so conditioned to not having a Camera Control button on the side of the phone that I haven’t been using it much. And when I do, half the time it doesn’t do what I’m expecting but I partially blame that on user error and inexperience. I wish the button could be reprogrammed as a more complex action button.

I don’t dislike it, as a photographer, it does slow me down a lot. I’d rather use the screen camera controls as they are much easier & faster to use. If Apple was going to “force us” to use the camera button, they would have removed all of the camera functions at the bottom of the screen so the new button was the only way to take a photo. Pressing the button shakes the iPhone too much and causes motion blur in photos. The button is just a marketing add on to sell more iPhones. I am happy with the 48mp UW camera.

I saw that F-Stoppers reviewed the iPhone and the new 48mp UW. They said it was worse. What i found was that F-Stoppers didn’t try hard enough. Yes the UW is soft at the moment, but third party apps like ProCam give the UW and the other cameras amazing clarity. So it’s a software glitch that Apple will have to fix.

I like it for one handed use, which I do a lot. It's sucks using the display to hit the camera button or zoom. The camera control button makes it so much easier.

For two handed use. I just use the display controls.

I didn't like the camera control at first (mainly because the default light press function was zoom - this is too fiddly to get the zoom I want), but with a few settings adjustments I really like it now.

My settings:

- In settings/Accessibility/Camera Control I set the Light-Press to Lighter
- More importantly, I set the light press function of the camera control to Cameras - now it just selects between each of the four native focal lengths of the three different lenses. This is way nicer and I can quickly and easily now change to the zoom level I want (with the added bonus of no loss of resolution).

I don't hate it ut I am indifferent about it and I am used to the old way that it's hard to change habits haha also swipe to zoom is way too sensitive. I can't use it. On screen controls are much easier for me

Try setting the light press function of the camera control to Cameras. Zoom is too fiddly (I agree).

How did you set the light press function to controls?

How is this done I can’t seem to find a setting to set that function in camera conteol

Firm press the camera control button to launch the camera app, then double light-press the camera control button. You can now slide between the different options.

I find myself activating the camera when I put the phone down or pick it up. It’s, to me, hard to use the zoom vs using the zoom on the camera app. I’m really contemplating this upgrade.
You can configure the button to only activate on double-press I believe. But yeah, that begs the question of why they didn’t just make the power button that.

I don’t hate it, but I don’t use. I’m indifferent as it does/did not change how I use my 16 PM.

Isn't the camera button also the 5G antenna?

I'm okay with them using the eyesore 5G antenna area from previous iPhones for something functional that doesn't hurt anything. Kind of genius tbh lol

If that's true, then yeah, kinda clever. But you could cover up the 5G antenna with your case. This is now another hole in the side of your case if you use one.

I don't like the feel of it. It's a weak point in any case. I guess I might appreciate it more when I actually have to use the button to take a photo as it's placed well for horizontal shots. But otherwise I find no use for it and I'm close to turning it off completely... but then I have a hole in the side of my case for no reason. I know, I'm weird that way... It's one thing when the solution searching for a problem doesn't affect anything else. But when it does... it's annoying.

The things I dislike about the camera control button are the form factor and overly stiff action. I believe it should be raised up instead of flush with the bezel and have more and gentler range of motion, like a real SLR shutter button where you can easily feel and control the half press. And get a full press without straining and potentially making the camera move. IMO, with this button Apple, as usual, bows to style over function. A raised button would work best with the phone in a case and Apple seems to want their colors and logos to be shown and almost encourages folks to go caseless. But the camera control button doesn't work great that way either.

I like it for how much faster it opens the camera verses touching the screen, but I don't find it super useful for making adjustments. I get what they were going for, and it can work, but it's hard to overcomes 10+ years of muscle memory.

Why not just double click the power button to active the camera app. Why is there a need for a separate button?

I tried it out in the Apple Store and was not impressed. It made me happy regarding my decision to keep my 15 Pro Max for another year.

The more I have the phone the more I simply don’t like that there’s an opening / button where I grab and grip the phone, evidently more than I realized (especially with my left hand). Even if I change to double click to open, my brain hesitates every time my fingers hit that spot and it’s pretty annoying. Not even a first world problem, but still annoying…
