I think Apple has been playing it safe without Jobs. They need him back to push the envelope. To tell people to get it done, by the deadline or you're fired!

I am extremely disappointed by today, because I cannot purchase one until July. Before I get the neigh Sayer saying "you signed a 2year contract," Ok... sure... yes... I did... and you know what they are going to let me upgrade in July... but is it going to bring heaven and hell down if they let me upgrade 1 month earlier.... So I can purchase it with everyone else like I did last year. Way to ostracize a customer.

It wouldn't hurt to try calling up AT&T if you only have a month or so left. Probably won't work but why not, right?

Between AT&T not being ready for MMS and tethering, to the "new" iPhone being really... meh, is anyone else kinda bummed?

I mean, I'm not gonna lose sleep over it, but there's nothing really "wow-worthy" about today whatsoever, at least in my opinion.

you havent even used it yet. how can you say this already?

What about the fact that we have yet to hear about multi-tasking? I can't wait to be able to listen to pandora while doing other things. How can it compete with the palm pre, if they don't release multi-tasking. To sum up my complaints:
1) No Multi-tasking
2) No MMS Until Late Summer
3) Tethering Details Unknown (Though ATT will support it at some time)
4) Pricing for Existing 3G Customers
5) Nothing to compete with Palm Synergy
6) No Gmail push technology
7) Nothing Breath-taking

1) Multi-task kills battery life, it will come, just not now...
2) Stop blaming Apple this is ATT's fault...plus its coming
3) Tethering will come...just be patient...
4) Pricing is on the website....
5) You think it didn't compete? I thought it did what it needed to do and that was it. 4.0 is up next so start looking to stuff again....
6) Not apples fault
7) Would you like a phone that dissapears on a button press, cmon....

I am personally happy for SL at 29 bucks My jaw dropped....

I think AT&T looked bad today. Here Apple is doing their keynote here in the US and twice there was a no AT&T listed their exclusive US carrier for new features. Didn't look good. And wasn't it AT&T that wanted to renew the exclusivity??? If I were Apple I would answer, "Hell NO!".

I just hope my Netshare still works with 3.0, hell with AT&T.

Next year should be the real hardware upgrade.

This was a far bigger hardware upgrade than last year. Forget the camera and all that nonsense - this is a pocket computer that happens to make phone calls. And they doubled the capacity and processing power. Once people see the 3GS in action the hardware in the 2G and 3G is going to look very old indeed.

It's on days like today that my signature is particularly appropriate.

How are they price gouging us? What other cell phone company lets up get a subsidized price on a new phone every year?

I am VERY happy what Apple is doing. The new Macbooks were a bonus also, who knew they would do that much to them? most people thought it would be just a bump is speed and that's all.

Dude you're wasting your time with these folks.

You mean the Palm Pre which sold 50 000

1) Multi-tasking is such a fundamental feature though (IMHO) I really think that Apple should've placed this on a higher priority
2) While I'm happy that its finally coming this is a basic phone feature that should've been on the 1st gen. iPhone

The rest I agree with you on but I do wish Apple wouldn't just push the price for existing iPhone customers to the shadows and barely mention it

i'm very disappointed. Starting with the lame 'upgrade' that brings the iphone up to standards on phones made in 1998 (video, mms, copy/paste), but in the same line, screwing old iphone owners out of some of the features for no reason other then greed....

the new phone:

it's weak as far as an upgrade goes. seeing some reports that apple won't even publish what the hardware differences are (engadget) is lame. Unless you have an issue with your current 3G, anyone upgrading is foolishly blind. I'm as big, or at least was, of an apple guy as there was, but you can't sell me that this is a big step for the iphone, and that this sets the iphone above any other phone out there. in my opinion, apple is slipping.

We all were laughing when Palm choose to launch their pre so close to WWDC, thinking apple will squash any momentum they gain....i don't see it. I think/hope the pre does better then the most optimistic projections. Maybe then Apple will realize that this isn't just a 'give them anything our logo on it, they'll buy it..." market...i hope there is competition, and a lot of it.

AT&T:

you are a joke. How did you not see this coming back in march when the SDK was announced? Are you that unprepared? unorganized? incompetent? Did you not understand what you were signing up for when you begged to be the only US carrier for the iphone? Do yourself, and iphone owners a favor and release exclusivity rights so that we can enjoy the iphone the way it was meant to be (mms, tethering, slingbox, etc)...

Apple:

You disappoint again. Not only with the aforementioned iphone. But with the apparent lack of due diligence with AT&T's unstable, undersized network. Also with the gouging of your loyal fan base by excluding certain features that are absolutely capable of running on older models, only in hopes that they plop down additional $$ for the new phone.

the best thing to happen is for the pre to be very successful, making apple respond with power....

Instead of***

looking from quite a distance, omg that iphone is matte black, that cool dude own an iphone 3G S!

but it ended up,
i'm telling you, i'm holding a iphone 3G S, oh wait i can't prove it if its not on yet, oh yeah.. come closer i'm gonna turn my iphone back and show u [32gb]!
*oh crap! [16gb]*
"don't worry, i'll show you when i charge the battery"
walks away

The Pre sure isn't off to a great start with 50 000 sold and a measly 18 apps.

in my opinion, apple is slipping.

Considering that Apple intends for everyone to upgrade their phone every 2 years, I'd say they did everything pretty much perfectly to match that plan.

But around here, doing things according to plan is something to complain about.

AT&T dropped the ball big time today, but everything Apple did was pretty much what I expected. It's the upgrade everyone should have been expecting.

Dude you're wasting your time with these folks.

Yea, you're right. You know what the fun part is? All these people who got the new 3GS will cry and moan next June/July when the "3GSS" (Super Sport? haa haa) saying at&t should give the 3GS users the subsidize pricing.

iPhone 3G upgrade (from original iPhone):
3G (2x faster than EDGE)
GPS

iPhone 3GS upgrade (from iPhone 3G):
3G (2x faster than iPhone 3G)
BlueTooth 2.1
Digital Compass
3.0 megapixel camera
2x more storage (16gb/32gb) for the same price-point (as 8gb/16gb)
Faster Processor
More Memory
Smudge resistant case

Seems to me, the weak upgrade was the one from LAST summer.

You aren't being gouged
Really? I've purchased 6 iPhones @ $199/phone (average) which represents $1194. Apple gets $18/month from AT&T for every phone and considering they are all on 2-year contracts that's another $2592. So, Apple has received and/or will receive $3786 for six phones. I would like to upgrade just *one* of these phones to the new 3GS and I can't get it at the price a new adopter will pay? *You* may not feel gouged if you have a single phone but *I* do. Capesh?

.....and just in case you're wondering.
BusinessWeek reports that the actual cost to make an 8GB 3G iPhone is $174.33

.....and please, don't give me the "It's AT&T's fault" routine. This is an *exclusive* contract between Apple and AT&T and each hand is well aware of what the other hand is doing. Apple has known since day one that AT&T would not be able to easily accommodate MMS and tethering.

BTW.....if you're thinking I'm an anti-Apple guy trolling, you're barking up the wrong tree. I also have an ATV, numerous iMacs, MBP and just about everything else Apple sells. I was happy with the presentation of Snow Leopard and I like what I'm seeing with the new laptop lineup. I will still support Apple but I am very disappointed with what I see as the latest iPhone debacle. I also won't ditch my iPhones as, everything else aside, I still think it's the best smartphone on the market. I just expected a bit more out of them.....

Why is everyone so interested in MMS when email is free? Do you actually enjoy being gouged by AT&T?

I am actually amazed AT&T isn't able to deliver sooner on MMS for the iPhone, it will be a goldmine for them.

As an original iPhone owner, I find the hardware updates compelling. I also would have preferred a matte finish back (similar to the old macbooks) and a black bezel instead of chrome, but I am happy with the current design.

I have heard from a moderately believable source that the "later this summer" date for MMS is... June 19th, plus or minus a couple of days. It's just not ready now, and they don't want all the beta testers calling in.

I agree, last year's 3g was even weaker than this.

No. I actually like the updates. I still have an original iPhone, so the changes for me are more. I rarely needs MMS and tethering is not that big of a deal for me. I have order the 32 GB in the Apple Store. Can't wait for it.

The only thing that disappoints me is the matte back. That looked nice.

Not Upgrading to 3Gs

I was very excited about today's announcement, until I realized that the cost for me to upgrade is $399- as I currently have a 3G. I can upgrade for the fully subsidized price in December, but at that point I'm six months away from the next IPhone, and would be in the same situation in six months.

I've always been a huge Apple fan, but this situation isn't what I expected. I am going to pass on the new IPhone, and after talking to several of my friends...they feel the same way. A big dissapointment! :(

I wonder why AT&T and others don't offer "upgrade assurance" that allows people to jump up to a newer model in the middle of their contract. It's not like it's difficult to get a new phone up and running.
