I'm right there with you, my wife and I decided to get the iphone in april. I got my 8 gb for $99 since it was a refurb, and she got hers for the normal price. So, since all the things I'm really excited for will be available for 3.0, I'm definitely glad we've been able to enjoy iphones months longer than if we had decided to wait!

I wonder why AT&T and others don't offer "upgrade assurance" that allows people to jump up to a newer model in the middle of their contract. It's not like it's difficult to get a new phone up and running.

I wonder why car makers don't do that? or TV makers, or boat makers, or....

Are you kidding me. Grow up!

Really? I've purchased 6 iPhones @ $199/phone (average) which represents $1194. Apple gets $18/month from AT&T for every phone and considering they are all on 2-year contracts that's another $2592. So, Apple has received and/or will receive $3786 for six phones. I would like to upgrade just *one* of these phones to the new 3GS and I can't get it at the price a new adopter will pay? *You* may not feel gouged if you have a single phone but *I* do. Capesh?
What?

Apple and AT&T had a revenue sharing agreement for the original iPhone, but not for the iPhone 3G.

If you're confused about that, you can check out Apple's SEC filings.

As a current AT&T customer mid-contract, AT&T will not sell you ANY PHONE for the price that a new customer would pay -- BlackBerry, Palm, Motorola, iPhone, whatever. That is their policy and has nothing to do with Apple.

If you recall, Apple wanted to buck that policy and sell its phones directly to the consumers (like they did with the original iPhone). This resulted in the price of the original iPhone being $399, which was a hinderance to mass adoption. So Apple agreed to let the carriers take over selling the phone at a subsidized price, which is why you were able to buy yours for $199 each. If Apple sold the iPhone 3G like they sold the original iPhone, they'd be $499 each.

Damn!

Well after this lame update, I was thinking that I won't be upgrading my iPhone until the next revision. But, the iPhone probably won't be on AT&T next year..... damn. This could be AT&T's last iPhone.... :(

Well if it is, then I need to start praying because I do not think (it is highly unlikely) that Verizon will get the next one, also what other carrier is there that doesn't suck worse then ATT and Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint are horrible, so if they leave ATT it is either with some new formed Carrier specifically for the iPhone or Verizon, but bets are off for Verizon because they would be competing with Apple, they both have Apps stores and VZ doesn't like to give up their control or a piece of their profits.

Who knows maybe Apple is working on their own deal or with someone else who can use the iPhone to launch them into stardom.

iPhone 3G upgrade (from original iPhone):
3G (2x faster than EDGE)
GPS

iPhone 3GS upgrade (from iPhone 3G):
3G (2x faster than iPhone 3G)
BlueTooth 2.1
Digital Compass
3.0 megapixel camera
2x more storage (16gb/32gb) for the same price-point (as 8gb/16gb)
Faster Processor
More Memory
Smudge resistant case

Seems to me, the weak upgrade was the one from LAST summer.

This is right on point.. I laugh every time a 3G owner says how underwhelming this update was..

Don't mind them, they are complaining about this upgrade, when their upgrade was even worse, most of these dissapointed threads are from jealous 3g owners who don't want to pay the price to upgrade.

I dunno what everyone's so disappointed about, if you'd been following the rumors you knew exactly what to expect today.

I disappointed myself at the last WWDC because I was expecting the world and I got the 3g, this time I lowered my expectations and didn't allow myself to get sucked into the more unrealistic rumors (ie. front facing camera).

The only small thing that disappointed me is that there's no change to the App Store to compensate for the vast majority of apps that go unnoticed.

I must admit that I was surprised by no change in the casing.

I have a 3g and don't see myself upgrading until next year at least. The better camera and compass would be nice but they aren't "Oh man I'm gonna run out and buy this now!" features.

I don't think I'll be making the plunge. Yes, I'm a little annoyed than the Iphone 3GS is just another way for Apple to just milk the market. They realized they didn't have to change much on the Iphone already.

The question for all 3G owners is Is the IPHONE 3GS really worth it? $400 worth it?

For video? (whatever, how many times are you really going to use it).

For AF 3.2MP (I mean its good for moments when you want to take a nice picture ...but until I see how good it is...meh)

The processor / ram bump.. (they claim its faster and according to some people who have had hands one...its faster than the PRE by 2x, but if you are tolerant of what you have now...do you really need to upgrade?)

I would paid 400 for the matte black finish alone. I just feel like I'm paying $400 to buy the same phone I bought one year ago.

All of these hardware updates aren't worth it, but a different looking back of a case is worth $400??

I am extremely disappointed by today, because I cannot purchase one until July. Before I get the neigh Sayer saying "you signed a 2year contract," Ok... sure... yes... I did... and you know what they are going to let me upgrade in July... but is it going to bring heaven and hell down if they let me upgrade 1 month earlier.... So I can purchase it with everyone else like I did last year. Way to ostracize a customer.

Is it going to bring heaven and hell down if you just wait one month? I love getting things when they come out (original iPhone, Pre), but you feel ostracized because you need to wait one month?

I'm disappointed that I couldn't justify getting the 3GS with 14 months left on my contract.

Oh well...just have to wait for the true multi-core iPhone to roll around.

The only thing I am disappointed about is not being able to get my new iPhone on release day and not knowing when it is coming to the country I am currently in.

Other then that, I thought the keynote was fantastic. New laptops with price drops, more info on snow leopard with an unbelievable price point. 3.0 coming next week(yesterday for me) and a new iPhone which is a substantial upgrade.

What is not to like? They just about covered everything.

Perplexing that people are so upset. Its an all around excellent device that pretty much does everything and provides a great user experience while doing so.

comon not all 3G ownes fall into this area :)

I have a 3G on a month to month apple plan, could sell it totally unlocked with no fees and no worries in a second to get a 3GS. I think the update/price drop will annoy a lot of people who just a purchased a 3G (when do tech jumps not ), but to me I wont be falling over my self to upgrade, i don't see it as a big enough leap forward (sure some people will and good for them). I would like to see the voice control come over to the 3G in the future though, the 3rd party app i have works for voice dialling but i bet the apple one is better. :D

Anyone notice this about the guidedtour?

I watched the new iPhone 3G S Demo here:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/guidedtour/

and I liked it. I was hoping for an improvement on the cracking case and a much better battery.

I watched the guidedtour and my big complaint has always been that there are so many aps available but you can only squeeze 144 of them on your phone at a time. unless you want to jailbreak it, but I noticed that in the guided tour there are 11 pages instead of the normal 9 plus the new finder page. So is Apple going to allow more apps on the new iphones or is this an iphone 3.0 feature?
and if anyone knows how many apps can be loaded?

iphone 2G
iMac 2.8Ghz 1Tb 4Gb Ram

Lets clarify some things.

2G > 3G also got 2x the storage but for less initial money, but more over the course of the contract. So in many ways 3G$ gets the storage bump for less money.

The screen is fingerprint resistant, not the case.

The new phone being twice as fast is a bit of a miscomprehension.

In the US. it won't be 2x as fast until at least the middle of 2010 when the new towers are online, and ONLY if you have towers in your area, which based on their 3G penetration is no guarantee. However, regular 3G will feel faster due to the faster processor and greater RAM.

This seems like a rude thing to say...

I could easily say that 3G S owners will do the same when a new one is announced next year...I won't because I think it is ridiculous how phone carriers overcharge for phones...

2G > 3G was not a storage bump.

Apple sold the original iPhone in 4GB/8GB/16GB sizes. The 4GB was discontinued a few months after launch, and the 16GB was added in early '08. The iPhone 3G kept the same 8GB/16GB sizes that the 2G ended with.

Thanks for the clarification on the smudge-resistance and maximum 3G speed, but they're still physical upgrades to the 3GS, so I think they're valid to list for comparison purposes.

I've had verizon on many other phone's and their cell service is great but the customer service needs help.. If the iphone did go to verizon I think that would be a good thing because I never had a issue with the cell coverage...
