Negatory, the watch in the case at my store was really shockingly light. It took s minute before I even realized it was space black. It was light a light gun metal color.

Haha! That's very funny.

Apple spent $40M on this advertising campaign, and you think that they produced a pre production model to put in the cases that are a lighter shade than the actual watches they sent to store for a try on? Come on, really?

Have a really close look at the photos and you will see they look far lighter in direct light.

Dude, I'm not talking about photos. I was there in person and took looked at the watch from all angles and it was not the lighting. It was significantly different from the try-on models by a mile. Not even close. A number of other posters who saw the space black watch in the display cases at their Apple stores and noted the same.

The left image is from Apple's site between last September and this March. The image on the right is current from March. Is the image on the right simply a more accurate rendering of a design that actually has not changed since September? Or did Apple decide to make the Space Black Watch darker since September? The encased Space Black Watches certainly look more like the picture on the left, while the try-on models look pretty much like the right image. Maybe the encased Space Black Watches do reflect an earlier design. Maybe it's lighting. Who knows? But I find the discrepancy most intriguing.

The space black watch -- when viewed in the display case -- looks much lighter because of the fluorescent lighting they have shining on it. It looks graphite-like under those conditions (which isn't bad).

Outside of the display case, it's a deep, deep jet-black. Really slick, IMHO.

I was at the apple store for an unrelated issue (my wife's iPhone had water damage). Took it as an opportunity to have a second try-on :) ... Needless to say, the space black looked even better the second time around! I mostly wanted to see if it would look nice with the white sport band (it does).

Yes I know it looks like it, but it would be really unapple like to do that. Let's see anyway :)

Graphite look will be Space Grey. If it's not completely black people will be mad.

I saw my wife PAM1970 and I fell in love with the color combination right away

It's complete black in real life and it looks great. I hope if I got black SS I will find a nice leather band to go with it.

Could you post more pics of your wife's watch? As a Panerai collector I've never met anyone who owns the $120,000 tourbillon. Thanks!

I can't wait to have mine, but I have to wait until june. Here is a pic i shoot in the Paris Opera Apple Store :)
I find the black colour just perfect :)

Glad you posted the part about the white sports band, I ordered that band as my second since they did not have a red. I liked the link bracelet, but wanted the other for hot casual days and for my daily walks. If they ever make the Product Red one I will also get it. Thought about the Milanese Loop, but it did not seem to go well with SS Space Black. Also have thought of mixing, and matching the sports bands. #

I was a bit doubtful when I order it. However, after the try on section. I am 100% happy with it's colour. It's exactly what I want, not regret at all.

I actually think the version on the apple watch website is spot on. The band and watch finish are not the same, the watch is glossy and the band is not. It's the same as the regular SS watch + link band in that regard. The regular SS watch is polished and the band is more of a grained matte.

If you look at the 3d version on the apple site, and slowly move it around so you can observe the the different shades that both the band and watch turn as they go in and out of a light source. You can clearly see why there's a bit of a disconnect between seeing the SB SS in the case and trying it on.

Anyone else regretting their space black stainless steel choice

I like how the display blends with the band more than any of the other watches in my opinion. I agree about the lighting probably making it look lighter in the case but I would also believe that they may genuinely be lighter. Maybe they are having issues with the DLC coating hence no availability for a month. I don't know if anyone remembers but that happened with a previous model of the iPhone where they could not get the white to coat properly and the white model didn't come out for months, I can't remember what iPhone that was off the top of my head.

Go to Instagram and search #spaceblack

Some of the pictures make the watch look jet black, while others look similar to the display, a couple look almost like the polished stainless model, but next to something dark and you are seeing the reflection of the dark item in the polished stainless.

I do think it's one of those colours that looks very different under different lighting conditions. Out in bright sunlight I think it's going to look lighter, a bit like the display ones, but when you go inside it will look almost jet black. To be honest I really do quite like that concept.;)

I really like the SB SS, I think it actually goes better with some of the other bands. IMO it actually goes better with about every other band than the reg SS or either aluminum model aside from the Milanese loop. SB SS w/ the green sport band or blue leather loop? Yes, please. I don't understand why people say it's tougher to pair up with the other bands.

That being said, I really really wanted a classy looking link bracelet, I was hoping the SB was less polished/glossy than it is. Both the SS models are polished, but polished black to me just comes off looking a bit like plastic.

Not sure if serious. The classic and modern buckles have standard SS connectors, which will clash with the Space Black case. The Sport bands and leather loops are just about the only bands (other than the out-of-the-box Space Black link bracelet) that the Space Black watch will look good with.

What about the leather loop?

Edit:
I just saw you included the leather loop. Between the sport bands and leather loop bands, that's a good percentage of the initial bands you can buy.

Agreed. But I think the SB looks better than the reg SS with the sport or leather loops.

Sorry. That's not my wife's watch photo. I got it from Google. Haven't shot a single picture of her collection. Why? I have no idea. Maybe because I'm not that impressed with Panerai? I don't even know much about it sans its expensiveness. :D

Finally found someone on Instagram post the Space Black with the leather loop band. Wish there wasn't a filter though.

Thanks you guys, I just cancelled my preorder. Will wait until about August and just walk into Apple Store and buy SB SS, sport band and leather loop. For this I can wait.

This watch works because of a huge amount of fine white detail all over its face, all the time. However, the SB Apple Watch is going to have no deal 99% of the time. I think that makes an enormous difference in its passive appearance.

No deal 99% of the time? What does that mean?

I'm not trying to be rude - I truly don't understand what you are saying.

Wow. That looks fantastic.

I had a bright blue leather band on order, but I cancelled it because it isn't water resistant, and I want to see how I use the watch first.

This gives me pause, but not enough to reorder. I'm very confident I can get whatever overpriced band I want, whenever I decide to get it. Somehow I doubt the leather loops are going to fly off the shelves at $150 a pop. :)

So, I'll wait and see how it goes first.

Heh. It was supposed to be detail, not deal. I was in a hurry, must've missed the auto-correct outcome.

What I was saying is basically that the lack of much, if any discernible detail from afar is going to leave you looking like you're wearing a slightly thick black band bracelet, and not a $1100 watch. You'll know, you'll see it up close, but, most people besides the wearer only see watches from several feet or further away. It's actually exacerbated by the rectangle case shape.

This is, of course, all my own impression of these sorts of watches, particularly after being an owner of one for a while.

Band choices aren't that limited. You're out milanese loop, modern buckle and classic buckle. You still have access to all the sport bands, leather loops and space black link bracelet.

In my opinion you shouldn't go space black if you ever want to go milanese loop. Modern buckle isn't such a big deal when you realize that the leather loops look AMAZING in person.

And classic buckle.. meh.

I really liked the space black SS when I tried it on. All the negativity had me scared. In addition to the gorgeous space black link band I'll be using the white and black sport bands and I also ordered the blue leather loop.
