I just got my 3G in December and gave my original iPhone to my Dad.
I don't want to see a new one come out because it will be so tempting to buy a newer one!

I have the cash to get the new iphone, however I am still on contract with my 3g when july comes i will be a year into my 2 year contract for a year i can wait with the release of firmware 3.0 and future apps and games like rolando sequel it will keep me happy until my contract ends july 2010 lol a long time isnt it!!!!!

I hope there is new hardware so people stop making the dime a dozen threads asking about whether they should wait to buy or not. On the other hand, assuming I'm right, we can expect to endure a new batch of speculative threads every single month until the new iPhone is released next year... so what I'm saying is that I hope I am wrong, and that Apple releases a new iPhone (a significant hardware update - not just a storage bump to 32GB) in June.

Hubbys due back the end of next month and is planning to get an iphone virtually straight away. How likely is it that there will be a new iphone in June/July? I thought is was just a software update? Should he wait a couple of weeks?

We will just end up with dime a dozen threads people whining about the 3rd gen iPhone not being good enough.:D

I myself hope that the next hardware upgrade would be compelling enough for me to ditch my 1st gen phone.

Wait a second!!! Stop the presses!

Didn't they say the iPhone will get a refresh every June? Did they specify if it was going to be a hardware refresh because the iPhone *is* getting a software refresh in June. Hmm......

No they didn't - nothing was said that indicates a yearly hardware refresh. The 3.0 OS update probably is this summer's refresh. It fits the timeframe, and fits the requirements of a refresh to my mind (considering all the new features). This is the point I've been trying to make for a while now...

Also, if you think about it... if they were planning on making a new iPhone with a faster processor, larger battery, lots more RAM... then why would they be spending so much time and money on making Push notifications? Push was designed to take it easy on the limited battery you have and keep your RAM from being used up by background processes. If they were indeed going to come out with a new iPhone, then it would probably only be a size bump (32GB) or a better camera sensor, but that's about it. If you think about it... the iPhone 3G only got 3G and GPS (now it's getting even more upgraded with MMS and A2DP... which the first gen can't do now, but nobody knew that last year).

I have to say, for once I'm really ambivalent about a new iPhone. I've had the original iPhone and then moved to 3G and along the way also had a Touch. Other than Notes sync, which is coming in the next software update, there is nothing really that I need that my current iPhone can't do. For once, I'm completely happy with what I have. I'm sure the next iPhone will have some additional bells and whistles, but I really don't see myself getting one, even if AT&T did provide some type of upgrade path. I'll probably just wait until I've had my 3G for the full 2 years and then see what is available then.

I really think that I might upgrade.... depends on the hard facts of the hardware updates. I can't really go off of rumors when it comes to money right now BUT I will be graduating in May from college so I'll probably buy one as I enter into the bleak work force. I love my iPhone 3G but some of the updates are too good to be true. I have been apart of the iPhone-mania for 2 years so I don't mind standing in line.

Haha, I'm hoping the exact same! I always love to have the newest technology, but as I am only young I cannot always afford it !

Oh well, as long as 3.0 includes video as rumored, I'll be happy. :)

It would be good if Australia offered an upgrade plan too for a lower cost....

I'm definitely not hoping that there's no new iPhone this summer. Firstly, that's one of the most selfish hopes I've ever heard "I hope there's nothing coming out, so I'd have the newest technology longer!" Honestly, who cares?

And secondly my contract is going to be up, and I hope the update will be more substantial than last year's iPhone 3G, which I skipped.

I'm still using the 1st Gen :apple: iPhone. The 3rd Gen :apple: iPhone hardware should be able to attract me to upgrade, I think.

Me too. I'm actually using a 1st gen iPhone with a cracked screen & no home button because it broke off when I dropped my phone, but I'm forcing myself to wait for the update. I'm not gonna break down and buy the iPhone 3g.

Same here... I need to see significant hardware improvements for me to upgrade from my 2G. Plus, w/ all the threads/complaints I've seen about how easily the plastic housing cracks on the 3G, I need to see some pics/reviews of the newest phone regarding build quality. Oh, and improved RF would be nice as the phone part is kinda sorta important too!!
